The aim of this study is to investigate the suitability of spruce and larch bark for the production of cement-bonded composites. At the beginning of this research, the curing behaviour of the admixtures was quantified with temperature profiles when testing spruce, larch, pine and poplar bark, to determine the compatibility between the components of the bio-aggregates, to analyse the cement curing and to establish which bark species should be successfully included in cement bonded composites. Considering the results, it was observed that the average densities of 600–700 kg/m3 of bio-aggregates are 40–55% lower than that of established products on the market, although spruce and larch bark are in a similar range. The situation is different for the compressive strength, as larch bark showed up to 30% higher values than spruce bark. This study revealed also different hardening characteristics of the two cement types used as binders for spruce and larch bark. The results of this study demonstrated that tree bark of Picea abies and Larix decidua Mill. can be successfully utilized for the production of a cement-bonded composite material.

Recentemente l'UNESCO ha invitato gli studiosi ad approfondire lo studio delle dinamiche storiche e ambientali che hanno portato nel corso del tempo allo sviluppo di specifici ecosistemi e paesaggi, definiti come ‘bio-cultural heritage'. Raccogliendo questo stimolo, il contributo è dedicato a caratterizzare storicamente i pascoli alberati di larix decidua alpini: a partire dalla bibliografia sulla storia e sull'ecologia del larice, due casi studio di lariceti passati e presenti in Trentino sono approfonditi utilizzando un metodo geostorico che combina analisi di fonti documentali e osservazione di terreno. In conclusione, i lariceti risultano essere un prodotto di pratiche di uso e gestione delle risorse pascolive e forestali, capaci di fornire vari servizi ecosistemici, ma ad oggi a rischio di scomparsa.

The objective of the study was to elucidate the kinematics of cone opening in the European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) during a four-step seed extraction process and to determine optimum process time on that basis. Each step lasted 8 h with 10 min of water immersion between the steps. The study also described the microscopic cellular structure of scales in cones with a moisture content of 5% and 20%, as well as evaluated changes in cell wall thickness. The obtained results were compared with the structural investigations of scales conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of characteristic sites on the inner and outer sides of the scales. The greatest increment in the scale opening angle was noted on the first day of the process (34°) and in scales from the middle cone segment (39°). In scales with a moisture content of 5% and 20%, the greatest changes in cell wall thickness were recorded for large cells (57%). The inner and outer structure of scales differed in terms of the presence and size of cells depending on the moisture content of the cones (5%, 10%, or 20%). The study demonstrated that the moisture content of cones was the crucial determinant of the cellular structure and opening of scales in larch cones. The scale opening angle increased with decreasing moisture content but did not differ significantly for various segments of cones or various hours of the consecutive days of the process. This finding may lead to reducing the seed extraction time for larch cones. The internal and external structure of scales differed depending on moisture content, which also determined the size and wall thickness of cells.

Fretwork, as a decorating technique, can today be performed with modern means by laser or CNC routing, but the tool influence on the surface quality must be well un\]=[-poitrwjerstood for further optimization of the cutting parameters. The paper presents an experimental work for the determination of the influence of the cutting angle with respect to the grain on the surface quality of larch wood (Larix Decidua Mill.) cut through by laser and CNC routing at different feed speeds. The research considered geometric fretwork patterns derived from triangle, where the cutting angles with respect to the wood grain were 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°. The feed speeds of the CNC routing were set for 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4 m/min. The surface quality was analyzed by a range of roughness, waviness and primary profile parameters combined with stereomicroscopic images. Although the principle of cutting and interaction with wood of the two processing tools, laser and CNC, is very different, the analysis with roughness parameters has revealed that the cutting angle with respect to the grain has an essential influence, whatever the cutting tool. The surface quality decreases with an increase in the feed speed of the CNC router and processing at 15° and 60° appears to be the worst option from all angle variants for both types of processing. Cutting by laser is melting wood in latewood areas resulting in a smoothing effect.

In eukaryotic genomes, cycles of repeat expansion and removal lead to large-scale genomic changes and propel organisms forward in evolution. However, in conifers, active repeat removal is thought to be limited, leading to expansions of their genomes, mostly exceeding 10 giga base pairs. As a result, conifer genomes are largely littered with fragmented and decayed repeats. Here, we aim to investigate how the repeat landscapes of two related conifers have diverged, given the conifers’ accumulative genome evolution mode. For this, we applied low-coverage sequencing and read clustering to the genomes of European and Japanese larch, Larix decidua (Lamb.) Carrière and Larix kaempferi (Mill.), that arose from a common ancestor, but are now geographically isolated. We found that both Larix species harbored largely similar repeat landscapes, especially regarding the transposable element content. To pin down possible genomic changes, we focused on the repeat class with the fastest sequence turnover: satellite DNAs (satDNAs). Using comparative bioinformatics, Southern, and fluorescent in situ hybridization, we reveal the satDNAs’ organizational patterns, their abundances, and chromosomal locations. Four out of the five identified satDNAs are widespread in the Larix genus, with two even present in the more distantly related Pseudotsuga and Abies genera. Unexpectedly, the EulaSat3 family was restricted to L. decidua and absent from L. kaempferi, indicating its evolutionarily young age. Taken together, our results exemplify how the accumulative genome evolution of conifers may limit the overall divergence of repeats after speciation, producing only few repeat-induced genomic novelties.

Larch (Larix decidua) bark is a sawmill waste, traditionally used for antiseptic, expectorant and dermatological (wound healing, eczema, psoriasis) purposes. In this work, we developed a food-grade dry larch bark extract (LBE) from sawmill by-products using hydro-alcoholic extraction. The antibacterial activity of LBE was evaluated against respiratory-tract pathogens, i.e. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Haemophilus influenza, and it was compared to that of grapefruit seed extract (GSE), a commercially available raw material commonly proposed as antibacterial ingredient for over-the-counter products. Procyanidins (PACs) and other polyphenols contents in LBE were determined by HPLC-FLD-MS and HPLC-DAD-MSn, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of LBE and GSE was assessed using the micro-plate dilution technique in concentration range of 2–200 µg/mL, and the safety of these dosages was assessed in cellular and animal models. LBE showed considerable contents of PACs (15% w/w; especially B-type) and other polyphenols (3.8% w/w), among which the characteristic spiropolyphenols larixinol and epilarixinol were identified, together with the flavonoids isoquercitrin and rutin, already reported as growth inhibitors of different respiratory-tract pathogens. LBE showed higher antimicrobial activity compared to GSE, demonstrated by a growth inhibition range of 10–40% towards five of six strains tested, compared to 10–15% of GSE. These results suggest that LBE may represent a natural and sustainable source of active compounds with antibacterial activity for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.

Adelgidae are a sister group of Aphididae and Phylloxeridae within Hemiptera, Aphidoidea and occur exclusively on Pinaceae. The piercing-sucking mouthparts of Adelgidae are similar to those of aphids and it is believed that adelgids ingest sap from both the non-vascular and vascular (phloem) tissues. The aim of the present study was to identify and characterize the adelgid stylet activities during their penetration in plant tissues. The probing behavior of Adelges laricis Vallot (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) on European larch Larix decidua Mill. and sucrose diets was monitored using the DC-EPG (Electrical Penetration Graph technique = electropenetrography). The EPG waveforms were described based on amplitude, frequency, voltage level, and electrical origin of the observed traces, and associated with putative behavioral activities based on analogy with aphid activities. Waveform frequency, duration, and sequence were analysed as well. A. laricis generated EPG signals at two clearly distinct voltage levels positive and negative, suggesting extracellular and intracellular stylet penetration, respectively. The adelgid EPG patterns were ascribed to four behavioral phases, which were non-probing, pathway, phloem, and xylem phases. Non-probing referred to the position of the stylets outside the plant tissues. Pathway phase was represented by three waveform patterns that visualized extracellular stylet penetration in non-vascular tissues without potential drops (AC1), with serial short (1.2–1.5 s) potential drops (AC2), and with ‘aphid-like’ (5–10 s) potential drops (AC3). Phloem phase comprised three waveform patterns at intracellular level, which in all probability represented phloem salivation (AE1), and phloem sap passive (AE2) and active ingestion (AE3). AE3 was a newly described waveform, previously unreported from Hemiptera. Waveform AG represented the ingestion of xylem sap. The comparative analysis demonstrated that the gymnosperm-associated adelgids show certain similarities in probing behavior typical of aphids and phylloxerids on angiosperm plants. The present work is the first detailed analysis of specific adelgid stylet activities on gymnosperms.
