Diabetes mellitus is a syndrome due to disorders of carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism due to decreased insulin secretion or reduced insulin sensitivity. The number of people with diabetes mellitus is increasing every year. However, diabetes mellitus is a major cause of cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney failure, and amputation due to gangrene. Patients with diabetes mellitus have a possibility of 2-3 times higher cardiovascular disease than non diabetic. Sappan wood containing brazilin that have antioxidant activity and had a potential activity to lower the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Objective of this research was to determine the activity of secang wood extract as an antidiabetic and antidyslipidemic on diabetic rat. Diabetic rat induced by alloxan and given extract once daily for 14 days. At 15th day, blood glucose level, lipid profile was determine, pancreas was harvested and processed to hystopathological examination. Secang wood extract decreased blood glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL level, increase HDL level, and repair the histology of pancreas on diabetic rat after 14 days treatment. Based on the result, secang wood extract had antidiabetic and antidyslipidemic activity on diabetic rat.

Objective: The aim of this study was to observe the antidyslipidemic and antioxidant activity of andrographolide (AND) compound from Sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata) herb. The antidyslipidemic activity could be described by lowering TC (total cholesterol), TG (triglyceride), and LDL (low-density lipoprotein) level in the blood and by increasing HDL (high-density lipoprotein) level in the blood. The antioxidant activity could be described by inhibiting the ox-LDL (oxidized low-density lipoprotein) formation. Methods: AND was separated from the sambiloto ethanolic extract. Atherosclerosis in rats was induced by rich fat food (5% yolk, 10% lard), 1% calcium and 20.000 IU vitamin D3 for 90 d. The rats were treated with AND compound on the 61st day for 30 d. On the 90th day, the blood of rats had been collected, and its blood vessel was also extracted. Antidyslipidemic activity was measured by estimating the level of TC, TG, LDL and HDL in the blood. Antioxidant activity was measured by calculating the ox-LDL concentration in blood and histopathology parameter. Results: 18 mg/kg BW AND could reduce the level TC, TG, and LDL in blood, and could increase HDL blood level significantly (p<0.05). This compound can also significantly inhibit LDL oxidation (p<0.05), and the histopathology result showed that this compound could protect the vessel from adhesive lipid plaques. Conclusion: AND compound from sambiloto herb showed the antidyslipidemic and antioxidant effect in atherogenic rats.

ABSTRACT

Background : dyslipidemia increases risk of cardiovascular disease on diabetes patients. Soybean contain many bioactive compounds which can help control lipid profile.

Objectives : analyze the difference between fermented soybean (tempe flour) and unfermented soybean (soymilk) on lipid profile in diabetic rats.

Methods : thirty male sprague dawley rats divided into 3 groups (1) diabetic control (2) tempe flour 1,8 gr (3) soymilk 1,35 gr. Tempe flour and soymilk were given for 28 days. Profile lipid measured including total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. The data then were analyzed using Anova with confidence level of 95%.

Results : the decrease values of total cholesteril, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol were better in tempe flour group (p<0,05). In addition, tempe flour group also showed better increase in the value of HDL cholesterl (p<0,05)
Conclusion :fermented soybean (tempe flour) showed better antidyslipidemic activity than unfermented ones
