In electric-powered cars, the production of which is increasing, the HVAC system is responsible for most of the noise inside the car’s cabin, causing significant discomfort for passengers. Moreover, the noise produced by the HVAC affects the perceptible sound inside the car cabin, significantly impacting the perceived quality of the vehicle. It is thus essential to investigate and quantify people’s preferences concerning HVAC noise. Our previous research revealed differences in the HVAC noise between hybrid electric (HEV) and internal combustion engine (ICEV) vehicles. A subsequent factor analysis revealed that the adjectives used to describe the sounds can be grouped into two main dimensions: Aesthetic and Loudness. The present paper highlights the results of a listening test that aimed to identify possible differences in the perception of HVACs’ sound quality between Italian and Japanese subject groups, for ICEV and HEV, in different functioning conditions. Results revealed that the most remarkable difference emerges at high air flow rates, where the Japanese group perceived the quality of sound and annoyance, respectively, to be significantly lower and significantly higher than the Italian group.

Abstract The present study aims to verify the impact of dynamic aids on learning L2 prepositions in relation to individual learner variables. Situated within the cognitive linguistics (CL) framework and differing from previous research, the present study hypothesizes that dynamic (animated) aids are not equally effective for all learners; rather, their effectiveness differs according to learners’ first languages (L1s) (Chinese or Japanese) and information-processing styles (verbalizers or imagers). To verify this hypothesis, we utilized learning materials comprised of static and dynamic images for three English spatial prepositions (above, on, over). After conducting a Style of Processing questionnaire, we administered three cloze tests (pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest) of target words to Taiwanese and Japanese participants (N = 109), whose L1s differed in terms of their linguistic proximity to English. Although no significant differences were found between the treatment groups in tests for all participants, the results were differentiated by individual factors. In results of a two-way ANOVA, Taiwanese participants showed significantly greater improvement from the pretest to posttest than Japanese participants when the participants used dynamic images, whereas the Japanese group made more learning gains from the posttest to the delayed posttest test. Moreover, imagers obtained more benefits from the visual aids, whether static or dynamic, than verbalizers. Our findings indicate that CL-based visual aids are beneficial and that individual factors, especially learners’ L1, may produce different learning effects, especially in multimedia environments.

Japanese vocabulary proficiency is directly related to Japanese language proficiency, and the learning and evaluation of Japanese vocabulary is vital in Japanese learning. To evaluate the learners’ Japanese vocabulary proficiency, in this study, we propose an effective method for evaluating Japanese vocabulary and implement it into a system. To prove the evaluation ability of the proposed method and implemented system, we conducted an experiment involving 80 students from the Japanese Group of the department of applied foreign languages of a senior high school to investigate the effectiveness of the method and system. The results of this study confirmed that (1) the reliability and validity of the proposed Japanese vocabulary evaluation method and system are favorable; and (2) the correlation coefficient between the experimental results and the students’ academic performance is higher than 0.80. Theoretically, the multidimensional Japanese vocabulary quotient model proposed herein can be the basis for Japanese vocabulary detection. Practically, the low-cost and rapid Japanese vocabulary evaluation system developed is applicable to educational evaluation, whereas the technical evaluation method and system for Japanese vocabulary can improve the efficiency and effectiveness in evaluating the Japanese vocabulary of learners.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a novel tick-borne infectious disease, therefore, the information on the whole genome of the SFTS virus (SFTSV) is still limited. This study demonstrates a nearly whole genome of the SFTSV identified in Osaka in 2017 and 2018 by next-generation sequencing (NGS). The evolutionary lineage of two genotypes, C5 and J1, was identified in Osaka. The first case in Osaka belongs to suspect reassortment (L:C5, M:C5, S:C4), the other is genotype J1 (L: J1, M: J1, S: J1) according to the classification by a Japanese group. C5 was identified in China, indicating that C5 identified in this study may be transmitted by birds between China and Japan. This study revealed that different SFTSV genotypes were distributed in two local areas, suggesting the separate or focal transmission patterns in Osaka.

This article explores brief overview of modern radar systems for imaging and monitoring the Earth from space. The operating radar systems are divided into four classes: large spacecraft with global monitoring SAR, medium-sized spacecraft with detailed observation SAR, small spacecraft with detailed observation SAR, and commercial mini-spacecraft with detailed observation SAR. Listed are the main representatives of each class. Such large satellites as: European – Sentinel-1 (A, B); Japanese – ALOS-2; Canadian company MDA – Radarsat-2; Argentine – SAOCOM-1A / 1B; Chinese – Gaofen-3. Representatives of the class of mid-size spacecraft with SAR: German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the leading European space company Airbus DS – TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X; Spanish PAZ; the Italian constellation of Cosmo-SkyMed satellites of the first and second generation; Japanese group IGS-Radar; Korean – KOMPSAT-5; Russian satellites “Kondor”. The small class includes Israeli mission satellites – TecSAR, RISAT-2 (India), Ofeq-10; Japanese – ASNARO-2, German satellites SAR-Lupe, English – NovaSAR-1. The last class of mini-spacecraft includes American - Capella and Finnish – ICEYE. The article also presents spacecraft for radar imaging, planned for launch, namely: the second generation of Italian satellites COSMO-SkyMed – CSG-2; 8 ICEYE spacecrafts (Finland); an increase in the Capella constellation, X-band radar satellites of the SuperView constellation and radar satellites Zhuhai (China); ALOS-4 JAXA (Japan); KOMPSAT-6 (Korea), radar satellites of the IRS constellation (India), American satellites XpressSAR, PredaSAR, EOS SAR, satellites of the Russian design Obzor-R1 and KondorFKA, as well as the space complex planned by ROSKOSMOS, including an orbital constellation of 6 small spacecraft for radar surveillance.

The article provides brief information about the history of the introduction of representatives of the genus Iris, analyzes the composition of the introduced varieties included in the modern collection in the BGI FEB RAS, and which are at various stages of the introduction study. The current volume of the collection is 188 species andvarieties, of which 88 varieties are included in the I. hybrida hort. group, 30 varieties in Siberia, 33 varieties in the Japanese group, 15 varieties in the Species Hybrid group and 22 species and forms of local and foreign flora.

AbstractEmotion perception from facial and vocal expressions is a multisensory process critical for human social interaction. When asked to judge emotions by attending to either face or voice, the accuracy was higher when facial expressions are congruent with vocal expressions than when they are incongruent. This congruency effect was shown to be affected by cultural background. Here we conducted functional MRI alongside a multisensory emotion perception task involving Japanese and Dutch participants. They were presented with movies in which congruent or incongruent emotions were expressed through faces and voices. The participants were asked to judge the emotion of either the face or the voice. Consistent with previous studies, behavioral results showed an interaction between group and task. fMRI results revealed that during voice-based judgement, congruency effects of the primary visual cortex, by means of the task related activity of congruent stimuli subtracted by that of incongruent stimuli, were more prominent in the Dutch group than in Japanese group. Finally, behavioral and neural congruency effects of the primary visual cortex were positively correlated only in the Dutch group. Taken together, our results show that culture affects the activities of early sensory areas in multisensory perception from facial and vocal expressions.
