Many instructors use videos to support their teaching in online courses to convey course content that would normally be taught in a traditional setting. Prior studies have shown some connection between utilizing online videos and student performance but do not always support their finding statistically or consider the nuance of the online videos, such as if the videos are required and how long the videos are. This article uses various quantitative analysis techniques to investigate the relationship between video length, student video viewing patterns, and grades. The findings indicate that videos should stay within a certain length to encourage student engagement with the videos and course assignments. Also, watching online videos is only positively related to grades when students are not required to watch, a result that is consistent across course-level and student-level models. Student viewing patterns also differ for courses that require watching videos versus those that do not. The article concludes by discussing the relevance of these results and how instructors can best utilize online videos in their courses.

Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) between the ages of 13 and 24 are a key population for HIV prevention. The parents of gay, bisexual, and queer (GBQ) adolescent males and the sex communication they have with their sons has yet to be explored as an HIV prevention intervention. We developed an online video series called Parents ASSIST (Advancing Supportive and Sexuality-Inclusive Sex Talks) to educate parents about sexual health topics pertinent to GBQ males. We pilot tested the series with a sample of 54 parents of GBQ males using a single-group post-test design. Participants viewed the videos and completed a survey measuring the acceptability and feasibility of an online video series to educate parents. Most of the parents (70.4%) believed that the videos would make parents more likely to initiate talking about sex with their sons. The results suggest that online videos are an acceptable way for parents to learn about GBQ sexual health topics.

Abstract Background: Medication errors can lead to life-threatening outcomes. Such errors can arise from the poor pronunciation of drug names, leading to the unintentional administration of incorrect medicines to patients. In our experience, students experience difficulties in pronouncing many drug names. We have devised a pilot study called DrugSpeak to provide students with the educational scaffolding required to pronounce both familiar and unfamiliar drug names correctly. Methods: A total of 26 willing student participants from a second-year Pharmacy course were provided access to online videos and audio recordings of drug names, and undertook a workshop that provided them with basic phonetics training to assist them in pronouncing drug names correctly. Students conducted audio recordings of a list of drug names at the start and end of the course, as well as surveys both before and after the intervention with the DrugSpeak Program. Results: Significant increases in student performances in terms of drug pronunciation and accuracy were observed following the DrugSpeak program. Students were strongly supportive of the DrugSpeak program in their coursework and perceived a high importance of drug pronunciation at university and in their future career paths. They also reported reductions in anxiety and improvements in their confidence levels arising from DrugSpeak in terms of their drug pronunciation proficiency levels. Conclusions: The DrugSpeak Program yielded promising outcomes in the improvement of student drug pronunciation skills, and in providing students with confidence to tackle drug names unfamiliar to them. Future studies will address the extensibility and effectiveness of the program in other health degree courses.

Background: A student's level of curiosity in a subject after learning about it through online videos has not been addressed well in the medical education field. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate online learning's effect on the stimulation of curiosity and short-term learning outcomes in a blended framework of precision medical education. Methods: A mixed-methods research design was used. During the 2020 academic year, all fifth-year medical students who, prior to class, viewed 6 video clips that presented 6 core concepts were invited to complete a survey and self-reflection on their learning process to assess their level of curiosity in each concept. For each group of medical students, teaching assistants helped collect anonymous survey data and summative assessment scores representing the students' learning outcomes. Video-viewing patterns, attained through an action log transformation, were also coded for analysis. Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests were employed to compare differences between groups, and multiple linear regression was used to select the factors affecting learning outcomes. Qualitative data were content-coded through a descriptive approach using thematic analysis. Results: Of 142 medical students, 136 watched the online videos, 124 responded to the questionnaires, and 92 provided comments. Students' curiosity levels after learning about each concept through online videos significantly correlated with the degree to which a concept was learned. Medical students spent a median of 1.6 h online, and pause frequency correlated with curiosity in certain concepts. Aroused curiosity was associated with short-term learning outcomes in inconsistent effect sizes and directions. Students' feedback revealed various dimensions of curiosity, including novelty acknowledgment, recognition of an information gap, and information-seeking requests. Conclusions: Curiosity can be induced through online video learning platforms and has a role in short-term learning outcomes in medical education.
