Many instructors use videos to support their teaching in online courses to convey course content that would normally be taught in a traditional setting. Prior studies have shown some connection between utilizing online videos and student performance but do not always support their finding statistically or consider the nuance of the online videos, such as if the videos are required and how long the videos are. This article uses various quantitative analysis techniques to investigate the relationship between video length, student video viewing patterns, and grades. The findings indicate that videos should stay within a certain length to encourage student engagement with the videos and course assignments. Also, watching online videos is only positively related to grades when students are not required to watch, a result that is consistent across course-level and student-level models. Student viewing patterns also differ for courses that require watching videos versus those that do not. The article concludes by discussing the relevance of these results and how instructors can best utilize online videos in their courses.

The growth of the internet in Indonesia provides an alternative for people looking for entertainment. In this case, it has been surveyed by a trusted source wearesociat.com, which produces data that internet growth in Indonesia has increased from year to year, namely by 54.7% in 2018 and continues to grow to 56% in 2019 of the total population in Indonesia. This shows that internet growth in Indonesia has increased by 17.3% in the 2018-2019 period (Nofriansyah, 2020:20). If in the past they had entertainment such as watching videos or films via television or radio, now people can access entertainment through devices, computers or laptops. The new media in this case is online video viewing services, namely Netflix. With a subscription system, people can be more efficient, fast and in accordance with the desired entertainment. This service is still relatively new, so companies have to make approaches and marketing to find customers. One of the media used by Netflix Indonesia is the Instagram account netflixid. So that researchers will see the effect of message characteristics on social media in shaping user engagement. Researchers used a quantitative method of content analysis of content posted on the netflixid Instagram account. There are two variables in this study, namely the independent variable related to post content messages (X) and the dependent variable related to user engagement. Variable X has three sub variables, namely the goal, message orientation, and elements in the netfixid Instagram post content. In this research, the message characteristics that have significance and influence on Netflix user engagement in Indonesia are found in the message element indicators in post content on the netflixid Instagram account.

In the article, the author analyzed the issues of improving the used incentive measures that can qualitatively improve the educational process of convicts held in penitentiary institutions. Despite the rather lengthy list of incentives provided by the legislator, the need to revise the norms of criminal executive legislation governing incentive measures for prisoners sentenced to imprisonment in the direction of ensuring the integrity of this system, the sequence of its elements, and their greater differentiation was noted. The author notes that the measures of material incentives, which include the payment of a monetary bonus and rewarding with a gift, are not working in practice, since the legislator has not regulated the question from what means they should be produced. At present, the spending of funds from the federal budget in this direction is not provided. In order to maximize the stimulation of convicts to positive behavior, it is advisable to expand the existing set of incentives aimed at maintaining the social ties of convicts. Based on the study, it is proposed to part 1 of Art. 113 of the Penal Code of the Russian Federation to supplement incentive measures in the form of a letter from the administration of the penitentiary institution to close relatives about the exemplary behavior of the convict; additional remote video viewing via the Internet; the presentation of the administration of the penitentiary institution to the court on the reduction of the term of serving the sentence; short-term vacation up to 15 days with a trip outside the penitentiary.

Sweet potato skin is usually only dumped as waste into the environment or sometimes used as fodder. Sweet potato skin still leaves ingredients that can be used to breed bacteria Acetobacter xylinum to produce Nata. However, in school do not know measures to use the sweet potato skin and the limitations of tools and materials. Technical guidance on how to make sweet potato skin-based Nata has been conducted to biology teachers and high school students/equivalents in Tanah Laut and surrounding districts. Making Nata refers to the basic techniques of making Nata by (Saragih, 2004). Methods of technical guidance activities through: 1) exposure of material about Nata and how to make nata; 2) Virtual demonstration of the making of Nata de piel batatas through video viewing; The activity was attended by 68 participants including teachers and students from 5 public high schools and 1 MAN as well as from polytechnics in Tanah Laut Regency. Based on the evaluation after guidance, 74.2% of participants stated that they understood how to make Nata de piel batatas from sweet potato skins and strongly agreed with this activity. Background: A student's level of curiosity in a subject after learning about it through online videos has not been addressed well in the medical education field. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate online learning's effect on the stimulation of curiosity and short-term learning outcomes in a blended framework of precision medical education. Methods: A mixed-methods research design was used. During the 2020 academic year, all fifth-year medical students who, prior to class, viewed 6 video clips that presented 6 core concepts were invited to complete a survey and self-reflection on their learning process to assess their level of curiosity in each concept. For each group of medical students, teaching assistants helped collect anonymous survey data and summative assessment scores representing the students' learning outcomes. Video-viewing patterns, attained through an action log transformation, were also coded for analysis. Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests were employed to compare differences between groups, and multiple linear regression was used to select the factors affecting learning outcomes. Qualitative data were content-coded through a descriptive approach using thematic analysis. Results: Of 142 medical students, 136 watched the online videos, 124 responded to the questionnaires, and 92 provided comments. Students' curiosity levels after learning about each concept through online videos significantly correlated with the degree to which a concept was learned. Medical students spent a median of 1.6 h online, and pause frequency correlated with curiosity in certain concepts. Aroused curiosity was associated with short-term learning outcomes in inconsistent effect sizes and directions. Students' feedback revealed various dimensions of curiosity, including novelty acknowledgment, recognition of an information gap, and information-seeking requests. Conclusions: Curiosity can be induced through online video learning platforms and has a role in short-term learning outcomes in medical education.

Purpose Software training is a new trend in software applications. A key problem with software training is that video tutorials are developed without considering the target audience. Although video tutorials are popular, little attention is given to their design features. This study aims to investigate how two multimedia research principles, visual cueing (VC) and practice type, influence task performance, mental effort and motivation. Design/methodology/approach Three video tutorials on non-linear editing were viewed by 118 Computer Science undergraduate students with high information communication technology experience. To analyse the relationships between the research variables, a 2 (non-VC versus VC) × 2 (post-video viewing practice versus stepwise viewing-based practice (SVBP) mixed factorial design was used. Findings The results indicated that neither VC nor SVBP influenced task performance; however, both practice type conditions led to higher levels of motivation. Research limitations/implications The incorporation of VC and practice type in complex software training is less likely to be beneficial for domain experts. Future studies should record eye tracking data to capture learners’ behaviours whilst learning a software application. Moreover, practice targeted with immediate feedback should be incorporated as it enhances scaffolding. Practical implications Neither practice type was considered effective by experts. A practice strategy with user-controlled pausing (i.e. markers) could enhance retention by allowing users to practice tasks after locating the most relevant parts of the video tutorial. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature by investigating two guidelines: VC and practice type in the context of complex software training targeting domain experts.

SummaryIn this paper, the process of building a model for predicting human brain activity under video viewing conditions was described as a part of an entry into the Algonauts Project 2021 Challenge. The model was designed to predict brain activity measured using functional MRI (fMRI) by weighted linear summations of the spatiotemporal visual features that appear in the video stimuli (video features). Two types of video features were used: (1) motion-energy features designed based on neurophysiological findings, and (2) features derived from a space-time vision transformer (TimeSformer). To utilize the features of various video domains, the features of the TimeSformer models pre-trained using several different movie sets were combined. Through these model building and validation processes, results showed that there is a certain correspondence between the hierarchical representation of the TimeSformer model and the hierarchical representation of the visual system in the brain. The motion-energy features are effective in predicting brain activity in the early visual areas, while TimeSformer-derived features are effective in higher-order visual areas, and a hybrid model that uses motion energy and TimeSformer features is effective for predicting whole brain activity.
