Navigating copyright issues can be frustrating to the point of causing anxiety, potentially discouraging or inhibiting legitimate uses of copyright-protected materials. A lack of data about the extent and impact of these phenomena, known as copyright anxiety and copyright chill, respectively, motivated the authors to create the Copyright Anxiety Scale (CAS). This article provides an overview of the CAS’s development and validity testing. Results of an initial survey deployment drawing from a broad cross-section of respondents living in Canada and the United States (n = 521) establishes that the phenomenon of copyright anxiety is prevalent and likely associated with copyright chill.

In this paper, we study the impact of labor unions on product quality failures. We use a product recall as our measure of quality failure because it is an objective metric that is applicable to a broad cross-section of industries. Our analysis employs a union panel setting and close union elections in a regression discontinuity design framework to overcome identification issues. In the panel regressions, we find that firms that are unionized and those that have higher unionization rates experience a greater frequency of quality failures. The results obtain even at a more granular establishment level in a subsample in which we can identify the manufacturing establishment associated with the recalled product. When comparing firms in close elections, we find that firms with close union wins are followed by significantly worse product quality outcomes than those with close union losses. These results are amplified in non–right-to-work states, where unions have a relatively greater influence on the workforce. We find that unionization increases firms’ costs and operating leverage and, consequently, crowds out investments that potentially impact quality. We also find some suggestive evidence that unions may compromise quality by hurting employee morale and by resisting technological upgrades in the firm. Overall, our results suggest that unions have an adverse impact on product recalls, and thus, product quality is an important dimension along which unions impact businesses. The study was underpinned by the DCC Curation lifecycle model and the CCMF which enabled the investigator to employ a descriptive research design to purposively capture data from a broad cross-section of 330 researchers. The data was analysed using SPSS to generate descriptive and inferential statistics that enabled the Investigator to answer the problem.Study findings demonstrate no explicit policies to guide each stage of data curation and capabilities. There were also inadequacies in the knowledge and skills capability, technological infrastructure and collaborative partnerships. Overall, RDM faced challenges in all the examined capabilities. These challenges limited managing, sharing, and reusing data.The study recommends establishing a CMU within the MGGL to oversee the implementation of RDM activities by assembling all the needed capabilities to support data curation activities and enable efficient managing, sharing and reusing research data

This chapter documents several brutal clashes between African Americans and the police, which engendered a loose coalition of Black organizations and a number of sympathetic white ministers. It recounts the Rochester cases that garnered significant attention, while police clashes occurred throughout most cities in the postwar era. It also mentions a case where the US Justice Department interceded and another case where the famed Nation of Islam leader Malcolm X joined the protest efforts. The chapter argues that police brutality became a salient issue for a broad cross section of the Black community, which included ministers who cultivated and promoted a unified response. It talks about the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) that worked closely with Malcolm X and local Nation of Islam leaders to organize a unity rally, chastising the Rochester branch for consorting with reputed Black separatists.

The musical film, “The Heart that Sings” (2011), written and directed by Robin Saex Garbose, is part of a genre of films created by and for Orthodox Jewish women. Heart provides a case study that illustrates the depth and breadth of Lubavitch Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson’s (1902-1994) influence on Jews and Jewish life well beyond his own community members. Schneerson’s outreach work via his shlichim, or emissaries, to unobservant Jews is well-recognized. The extent and nuance of his influence on a broad cross-section of Jews, however, has yet to be fully traced. Heart tells its viewers that Jewish women from all backgrounds can create an empowered, unified community, if religiously observant, Orthodox practices are in place, perpetuating Schneerson’s message with a feminist bent and musical twist.

TaxonWorks is a web-based workbench facilitating curation of a broad cross-section of biodiversity informatics concepts. Its development is currently led by the Species File Group. TaxonWorks has a large, JSON serving, application programming interface (API). This API is slowly being exposed for external use. The API is documented at https://api.taxonworks.org. Here we highlight some existing key features of the API focusing on the TaxonWorks concepts of People, Sources, Collection Objects, Taxon Names, and Downloads and provide a brief roadmap for upcoming additions. Highlights include the ability for data curators to produce shareable bibliographies, DarwinCore Archives (DwC-A), and Catalogue of Life-formatted datasets, access their nomenclature as autocompletes and via many filter facets, share Person metadata including numerous identifier types, and perform basic Geo-JSON and simple DwC-A parameter-based filtering on Collection Objects. As examples of what can be done with the API, we provide several visualizations that are straightforward to implement by those with basic R, Python, Javascript, or Ruby programming skills.

Powerful incentives are driving the adoption of FAIR practices among a broad cross-section of stakeholders. This adoption process must factor in numerous considerations regarding the use of both domain-specific and infrastructural resources. These considerations must be made for each of the FAIR Guiding Principles and include supra-domain objectives such as the maximum reuse of existing resources (i.e., minimised reinvention of the wheel) or maximum interoperation with existing FAIR data and services. Despite the complexity of this task, it is likely that the majority of the decisions will be repeated across communities and that communities can expedite their own FAIR adoption process by judiciously reusing the implementation choices already made by others. To leverage these redundancies and accelerate convergence onto widespread reuse of FAIR implementations, we have developed the concept of FAIR Implementation Profile (FIP) that captures the comprehensive set of implementation choices made at the discretion of individual communities of practice. The collection of community-specific FIPs compose an online resource called the FIP Convergence Matrix which can be used to track the evolving landscape of FAIR implementations and inform optimisation around reuse and interoperation. Ready-made and well-tested FIPs created by trusted communities will find widespread reuse among other communities and could vastly accelerate decision making on well-informed implementations of the FAIR Principles within and particularly between domains.

The ability to obtain different wines with a singular organoleptic profile is one of the main factors for the wine industry’s growth, in order to appeal to a broad cross section of consumers. Due to this, white wines made from the novel grape genotypes Albillo Dorado and Montonera del Casar (Vitis vinifera L.) were studied and compared to the well-known Airén at two consecutive years. Wines were evaluated by physicochemical, spectrophotometric, high-performance liquid chromatography–diode array detection–mass spectrometry, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and sensory analyses. The chromatic characteristics of the new wines were defined by more color purity than Airén, with greenish highlights. In general, the phenolic profile of the Albillo Dorado wines showed a higher flavonol and hydroxycinnamic acid derivative content. Several volatile compounds were determined, and their odor activity values were calculated to determine their impact on wine aroma. A fruity series dominated the wine aromatic composition, but spicier and greener notes characterized the aroma profile of Airén wines. Albillo Dorado and Montonera del Casar were sensory evaluated as wines with a less fresh taste compared to Airén. Unique chemical and sensory profiles were determined for wines made from these novel grape genotypes, providing alternative monovarietal wines to encourage the wine market growth and extend the offer to consumers.
