In a movement that led to over a million civilian deaths and the persecution of millions more, the Chinese Cultural Revolution mobilized all aspects of state in order to upheave traditional hierarchy and maintain a Maoist regime. During this time, under the Educated Youth Program, nearly 17 million students of varying societal backgrounds moved to rural locations to develop “proper” values and skills. Through a qualitative ethnographic case study, twelve narrative interviews conducted with participants of the program, representing multiple regions in China, were examined under the principles of thematic analysis in order to discover overarching themes about the immaterial impacts that occurred as a result of this wide-scale emigration and whether these changes were positive or negative. Data indicated that (1) because of the rural environment and hard-working people around them, many participants gained perseverance, and (2) increased interactions with those of ethnic and economic different backgrounds led to greater acceptance of others. The findings of the study suggest that the Educated Youth Program was ultimately beneficial for its participants in regards to their overall life. These results help build a more comprehensive understanding about the impacts of rural education in China through the direct incorporation of participants’ perspectives.

BackgroundPrevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) is an immersive 1 day in-hospital injury awareness and prevention programme designed to educate high-school students on the consequences of a variety of risk-taking behaviours. This multisite contemporary analysis examined differences in programme effect and temporal changes on participant knowledge and attitudes.MethodsMetropolitan and rural schools were invited to attend the programme at one of the 11 hospital sites throughout Queensland, Australia. Pre–post study design with participant questionnaires provided at three time periods: immediately preprogramme and postprogramme, and 4 months later. The questionnaire used scenarios to determine a participant’s opinion on the safety of drugs/alcohol, driving and risk-taking activities, using Likert scales.ResultsA total of 5999 students participated in the programme between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2019. Responses to all questions related to safety, harm or risk followed a similar pattern. The immediate postcourse responses demonstrated significant increased awareness of risk or change in action, followed by a decay at 4 months to within 10% of preprogramme levels. Public school students, males and students from Central and North Queensland demonstrated lower risk-aversion (p<0.05).ConclusionThis study demonstrated across more than 100 school sites, the positive change in knowledge and student participant attitudes towards risk-taking behaviours after attending the P.A.R.T.Y. programme. The need to address the significant decay at the 4-month follow-up was identified. Findings offered potential for tailoring of messaging to target key demographic groups/topics where the decay was greatest.

Penggunaan tembakau masih menjadi permasalahan kesehatan pelik di dunia. Perokok dewasa menyampaikan mereka memulai kebiasaannya semenjak remaja. Diperukan peran aktif tokoh masyarakat setempat berkerja sama dengan Puskesmas dalam menggiatkan program remaja bebas asap rokok dan organisasi kemasyarakat yang membina keterampilan hidup sehat remaja.---Tobacco use is still a complex health problem in the world. Adult smokers say they started the habit as a teenager. The COVID-19 pandemic situation demands more vigilance, including increasing immunity so as not to become infected. Smoking habits increase a person's risk of being exposed to COVID-19 and increase the risk of disease severity due to COVID-19. This service aims to increase teenagers' understanding of the risk of smoking in exacerbating the COVID-19 disease and understanding in preparing themselves and their families to be smoke-free. The method used is blended learning to increase target accessibility in receiving information during this pandemic. The lecture and discussion method are carried out through in-person meetings, zoom meetings, and what apps. Implementing activities with a team of students carried out activities to the target, namely youth in Turtomulyo Village, Kretek, Bantul. The results of the activity showed a change in teenagers' understanding of the dangers of smoking, but there was no belief that COVID-19 would increase the risk of adolescents being infected with the virus and worsening the disease. Teens are also not ready to accept smoke-free homes in their neighbourhoods. Adolescent education activities about the dangers of smoking need to be carried out continuously. There is a need for the active role of local community leaders in collaboration with the Puskesmas in activating the smoke-free youth program and community organizations that foster youth healthy life skills.

The United Nations (UN) emphasizes that health promotion, education, and empowerment of women are all goals that will help to end poverty. In eastern rural Tanzania, young women who dropped out of school now take an active part in health promotion campaigns in schools and villages through the youth program “Innovative and Productive Youth”, which is administered by the nongovernmental organization Hatua na Maendeleo (HAMA). The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how some of these young Tanzanian women experience participating in health promotion campaigns. A hermeneutic phenomenology design with focus group interviews was used. The study’s participants were nine young women between the ages of 18 and 23 who had participated in the youth program for one year. In addition, the participants were given the opportunity to provide written elaboration in Kiswahili after the interviews. The findings were analyzed from an empowerment perspective and revealed the benefits that the young women had experienced, which were expressed as three themes, i.e., my involvement in the campaigns (a) made me strong and confident, (b) made me become a role model, and (c) made me think that I can achieve something. Involvement in health promotion campaigns seemed to empower the young women by increasing their confidence and providing a feeling of self-efficacy. In addition, their health literacy increased, which appeared to have a ripple effect on their families, peers, and the local community. The findings from this study provide insight into the participants’ self-reported short-term effects. Moreover, with this study, it can be argued that by empowering individuals, community transformation can be seen as well.

This paper represents the experience and self-reported skill development of undergraduate Science and Engineering outreach instructors, who were working primarily online during the global pandemic in 2020. This work is part of a larger multi-year project designed to articulate the learning and employability skills gained by a pan-Canadian group of undergraduates, by way of theirtraining and work experience as youth program Instructors delivering STEM outreach activities for youth. The development of these skills was measured using a post-program survey, in which undergraduate instructors were asked a number of questions about their skill development. Instructors noted development most significantly in (1) teamwork and collaboration; (2) adaptability and flexibility: (3) communication, (4) leadership, (5) innovation and creativity, and (6)initiative. A significant theme noted was the learning that took place from the sudden shift to teaching remotely and working through a pandemic. Although the focus of STEM Outreach research & evaluation is often on the impact of the program on its participants, this work demonstrates the value of the instructor experience, and how this work can leverage other post-secondary initiatives designed to prepare undergraduates for their careers.
