<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Topical exposure to chemicals from cosmetics can lead to adverse skin effects or skin irritation. This study aimed to investigate the skin irritation and sensitizing potential of a moisturizer Venusia max lotion (paraben-free, alcohol-free, mineral oil-free, animal origin free (PAMA) free).</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> In this single-center, non-randomized, observational study, skin irritation, and skin sensitization potential of a test product was assessed using the human repeat insult patch test (HRIPT) technique. Approximately 0.04 g of the test product and filter papers dipped in 0.9% isotonic saline solution (~0.04 ml of solution) were filled in different wells of patch chambers and applied occlusively, on the back of each participant. Scoring of the skin reactions in the induction phase and challenge phase was done using Draize and international contact dermatitis research group (ICDRG) scales respectively. Scores were compared to the baseline and the negative control (isotonic saline).<strong></strong></p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> In total 234 participants (50 with sensitive skin), 224 and 221 participants completed the induction phase and challenge phase respectively. Scores for the induction phase for Venusia max lotion (PAMA free) and isotonic saline were 0.46 and 0.06 respectively. The mean cumulative score of erythema and oedema for Venusia max lotion (PAMA free) was below 2. For the challenge phase, none of the participants showed any positive reactions at any time point for test product and isotonic saline.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Test product Venusia max lotion (PAMA free) found to be non-irritant and hypoallergenic. Thus, it can be used without fear of skin irritation or sensitization.</p>

Swedish farmers were surveyed about their perceptions of genetically modified (GM) feed. Livestock in the EU are frequently given feed containing imported genetically modified (GM) crops, with GM fodder often being cheaper for farmers. However, there is also a growing market for ‘GM-free’ animal-based products. While public concerns about GMOs have been studied extensively, less is known about farmers’ views. The limited literature on farmers and GMOs tends to focus on the economic factors influencing their adoption. The present study contributes the perspective of farmers as members of the general public, thus including a broader set of factors known to be relevant for the public perception of GMOs. The results indicated that farmers were worried about: i) unforeseen consequences for the environment, ii) un­foreseen consequences for human and animal health, and iii) the dominance of multinational companies. Farmers who could expect their farm businesses to benefit from existing GMOs were more positive, whereas those who were unlikely to experience any benefits or who could expect their farm business to be adversely affected were more negative. Nevertheless, adherence to a broader set of positive or negative values suggests that Swedish farmers’ perspectives on GMOs go further than pure considerations of farm management.

Entrapment neuropathy (EN) is a prevalent and debilitative condition caused by a complex pathogenesis that involves a chronic compression–edema–ischemia cascade and perineural adhesion that results in excessive shear stress during motion. Despite decades of research, an easily accessible and surgery-free animal model mimicking the mixed etiology is currently lacking, thus limiting our understanding of the disease and the development of effective therapies. In this proof-of-concept study, we used ultrasound-guided perineural injection of a methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-b-Poly(lactide-co-glycoilide) carboxylic acid (mPEG-PLGA-BOX) hydrogel near the rat’s sciatic nerve to induce EN, as confirmed sonographically, electrophysiologically, and histologically. The nerve that was injected with hydrogel appeared unevenly contoured and swollen proximally with slowed nerve conduction velocities across the injected segments, thus showing the compressive features of EN. Histology showed perineural cellular infiltration, deposition of irregular collagen fibers, and a possible early demyelination process, thus indicating the existence of adhesions. The novel method provides a surgery-free and cost-effective way to establish a small-animal model of EN that has mixed compression and adhesion features, thus facilitating the additional elucidation of the pathophysiology of EN and the search for promising treatments.

The microbiome lies at the forefront of scientific research, as researchers work to uncover its mysterious influence on human development and disease. This paper reviews how the microbiome is studied, how researchers can improve its study, and what clinical applications microbiome research might yield. For this review, we analyzed studies concerning the role of the microbiome in disease and early development, the common methodologies by which the microbiome is researched in the lab, and modern clinical treatments for dysbiosis and their possible future applications. We found that the gut microbiome is essential for proper development of various physiological systems and that gut dysbiosis is a clear factor in the etiology of various diseases. Furthermore, we found that germ-free animal models and microbiome manipulation techniques are inadequate, reducing the efficacy of microbiome research. Nonetheless, research continues to show the significance of microbiome manipulation in the clinical treatment of disease, having shown great promise in the prevention and treatment of dysbiosis. Though the clinical applications of microbiome manipulation are currently limited, the significance of dysbiosis in the etiology of a wide array of diseases indicates the significance of this research and highlights the need for more effective research methods concerning the microbiome.
