Based on bioactive glasses (BG) of 58S, sol–gel method is used to prepare strontium oxide substituted bioactive glasses (SrO-BG) with different strontium content. SrO-BG and nano hydroxyapatite (HAp) composite materials were synthesized using precipitation method. The phase composition and morphologies of the prepared materials were examined by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The dissolution and bio-mineralization of SrO-BG and SrO-BG/HAp composites in SBF are investigated by immersion method. The effects of secretion components of macrophages regulated by strontium doped SrO-BG/HAp composites on the osteogenic differentiation (OD) of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) are analyzed. The results demonstrate that the SrO-BG can inhibit the dissolution of BG. Different proportions of SrO-BG/HAp composites show good ability to induce HAp in SBF. The bio-mineralization ability of SrO-BG/HAp composites increases with the increase of SrO-BG content. The results of dissolution behavior and bio-mineralization of SrO-BG/HAp composite show that the dissolution rate of each ion can be controlled by adjusting the content of SrO-BG in the composite, and then the degradation rate can effectively be controlled. The results of in vitro experiments show that SrO-BG/HAp composites with 2%, 5% and 8% strontium content are more effective in promoting M2 polarization of macrophages than SrO-BG/HAp composites with 0% strontium content. Among them, 5% strontium doped SrO-BG/HAp has the strongest effect on M2 polarization of macrophages, and the secretion of macrophages regulated by 5% strontium doped SrO-BG/HAp composite is more conducive to bone repair.

Abstract In this work, the PbFe12O19 nanoparticles were prepared by the simple and optimized precipitation method with different organic surfactants and capping agents. In the next step, the TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized using the sol-gel method. At the final step, the PbFe12O19-TiO2 nanocomposites were prepared via the sol-gel method. The effect of the precipitating agent on the morphology and particle size of the products was investigated. The prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results obtained by the vibrating sample magnetometer show the magnetic properties of the ferrite nanostructures. The photocatalytic effect of the PbFe12O19-TiO2 nanocomposite on the elimination of the azo dyes (acid black, acid violet and acid blue) under ultraviolet light irradiation was evaluated. The results indicate that the prepared nanocomposites have acceptable magnetic and photocatalytic performance.

The various gas sensors were designed for detection of different gases in the air using different oxides and impurities [1-3]. For example the manufacturing of ammonia sensors on the basis of CuxS-micro-porous-Si structure includes manufacture of micro-porous silicon, drawing on it of SiO2 isolating layer, and then the CuxS layer [4, 5]. The special equipment for all these processes is needed. More usable method for sensor production is so-called soft chemistry or sol–gel synthesis [6, 7].

Sol-gel Zr0.1Ce0.9O2 and Zr0.1(Ce0.75Pr0.25)O2 mixed oxides and coprecipitated pure ceria CeO2 displaying the fluorine type structure have been used as platinum or ruthenium catalysts’ supports for catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of aqueous solution of acetic acid (78 mmol.L-1). These catalysts were prepared by conventional impregnation (5 wt-%) from platinum and ruthenium precursor salts or by exchange (~2 wt-%) in the case of ruthenium. A screening of catalysts in CWAO at 200°C under 2 MPa was performed and reveals that the best platinum catalyst is supported on pure ceria displaying large surface. For ruthenium catalysts, the highest conversion after 3 hours of reaction has been reached by the Ru/Zr-Ce-O system.

Spherical YAG:Ce3+phosphors were synthesized by three different routes namely sol-gel method, co-precipitation method and solvethermal method. The microstructure, crystallization and luminescent properties of the phosphors were studied in order to find the best processing parameter for spherical shape and good luminescence properties of YAG:Ce3+phosphor. Adding citric acid to the precursor solution resulted in the formation of spherical particles in sol-gel method. YAG:Ce3+phosphor made by co-precipitation method was separated with PEG2000, and its spherical particles of size was around 500nm. The hydro-thermal method could get perfect spherical appearance, but it needed heat treatment improve the luminescence property.

Synthesis processes of nano alumina abrasive precursor using precipitation method and sol-gel method were investigated in this study. Using pressureless sintering, the nano alumina abrasive was prepared. Mechanical properties of the samples were measured by using single particle compressive strength tester. The microstructures of them were examined by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The results indicated that the performance and microstructure of the samples are greatly relative to the synthesis processes. Compared with samples prepared by precipitation method, the samples prepared by sol-gel method have higher compressive strength, smaller grain size and more uniform microstructure. The average grain size of the alumina abrasive was below 100nm.

Aluminium titanate-alumina (AT-A) composites were sintered from the precursor powders prepared by two different methods: a simple sol-gel based heterogeneous precipitation method and a traditional blending method. The crystalline phase, microstructure, mechanical strength, sintering properties, and thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of the sintered AT-A composites were investigated and compared. The heterogeneous precipitation method increases the homogeneity of the precursor powders and improves the mechanical and sintering properties of the AT-A composites. The AT-A composites with a Al:Ti ratio of 2.2 achieve the optimal performance where the bending strength is high and the TEC remains low.

An electrolyte composite of 1Yb10ScSZ made of ZrOCl2.8H2O, Yb2O3 and Sc2O3 precursors has been investigated as solid electrolyte for SOFC. As first step, nano powders of 1Yb10ScSZ were synthesized using sol-gel and precipitation method towards water as medium employing l-arginine as organic substance to initiate the reaction. Subsequently, it was followed by calcinations with temperature variations of 600, 650 and 700°C to obtain a proper phase and particle size. Nano powders produced were cold-pressed utilizing 100 MPa of pressure and sintered at 1350°C of temperature to achieve solid electrolyte of 1Yb10ScSZ. The results of DLS and FESEM analysis of nano powders obtained from sol-gel method showed that the variations of calcinations temperature didn’t influence the particle size produced. Whereas DLS and FESEM analysis of nano powders made by precipitation method indicated that it affected size of particle. The microstructure analysis using FESEM revealed that precipitation method produced spherical structure with 10-30 nm of particle size. Porosity measurement employing Archimedes method exhibited density of pellet over 95%. The results of this study have met the necessary requirements as exceptional electrolyte for SOFC.
