The existing environmental problems resulting from the use and subsequent discharge of water by mining and metallurgical enterprises are analyzed. The relevance of developing methods for an integrated assessment of water properties is presented, which will allow the study of not only physical-chemical, but also the biological parameters of water. Experimental studies of water samples are conducted based on the method of gas-discharge radiation. The existing methods for extracting informative features of gas-discharge radiation images of liquid-phase objects are analyzed. Histograms of gas-discharge radiation images of various types of water were constructed and studied. The expediency of dividing images into separate fragments, characterized by common texture features, is shown. The analysis of texture features is carried out based on the use of the Fourier transform. Using the Fourier transform for the corresponding luminance vectors, the spectra have been obtained of the spatial distribution of the frequencies of brightness changes, which are used as texture features to identify the specific characteristics of the gas-discharge tracks formation. It has been determined that the developed method of water analysis allows assessing its biological properties, which is based on the values of the spatial frequency range. The advantage of the proposed method over the existing ones is the possibility of quantitative assessment in the form of numerical values of the covered range of spatial frequencies. The proposed method of studying the biological properties of water can be used as part of modern environmental monitoring systems.

Structural biology relies on detailed descriptions of the three-dimensional structures of peptides, proteins, and other biopolymers to explain the form and function of biological systems ranging in complexity from individual molecules to entire organisms. NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, in combination with several types of calculations, provide the required structural information. In recent years, the structures of several hundred proteins have been determined by one or both of these experimental methods. However, since the protein molecules must either reorient rapidly in samples for multidimensional solution NMR spectroscopy or form high quality single crystals in samples for X-ray crystallography, nearly all of the structures determined up to now have been of the soluble, globular proteins that are found in the cytoplasm and periplasmof cells and fortuitously have these favorable properties. Since only a minority of biological properties are expressed by globular proteins, and proteins, in general, have evolved in order to express specific functions rather than act as samples for experimental studies, there are other classes of proteins whose structures are currently unknown but are of keen interest in structural biology. More than half of all proteins appear to be associated with membranes, and many cellular functions are expressed by proteins in other types of supramolecular complexes with nucleic acids, carbohydrates, or other proteins. The interest in the structures of membrane proteins, structural proteins, and proteins in complexes provides many opportunities for the further development and application of NMR spectroscopy. Our understanding of polypeptides associated with lipids in membranes, in particular, is primitive, especially compared to that for globular proteins. This is largely a consequence of the experimental difficulties encountered in their study by conventional NMR and X-ray approaches. Fortunately, the principal features of two major classes of membrane proteins have been identified from studies of several tractable examples. Bacteriorhodopsin (Henderson et al., 1990), the subunits of the photosynthetic reaction center (Deisenhofer et al., 1985), and filamentous bacteriophage coat proteins (Shon et al., 1991; McDonnell et al., 1993) have all been shown to have long transmembrane hydrophobic helices, shorter amphipathic bridging helices in the plane of the bilayers, both structured and mobile loops connecting the helices, and mobile N- and C-terminal regions.

Crucian carp (Carassius carassius) is a key fish species in most Chinese subtropical and tropical shallow lakes. Through sediment feeding, crucian carp could greatly change water turbidity and nutrient levels, as well as the abundance of herbivorous consumers, which may have important influences on seston element stoichiometry. However, so far, experimental studies on this topic are lacking. We conducted a 36-day mesocosm experiment to explore the effects of crucian carp on water physicochemical and biological properties, and C/N/P ratios in suspended particulate matter (SPM) under eutrophic conditions. Our results provided three major findings: (1) Crucian carp resuspended sediments and along with them, reduced light penetration and lower light/total phosphorus (TP) ratios. (2) Crucian carp reduced biomasses of both zooplankton and macrozoobenthos, whereas their effect on phytoplankton was weak, potentially because of resuspension-induced light limitation. (3) Both C/P and N/P ratios in SPM were significant lower in mesocosms with crucian carp than in fish-free controls, which may be attributed to the high contribution of P-rich sediments and low light to nutrient supply caused by fish-induced resuspension. Our results suggest that besides planktivorous fish, benthivore (e.g., crucian carp) in warm shallow waters could also affect pelagic C/N/P stoichiometry via sediment feeding, which may further influence energy transfer efficiency in lake food chain.

✓ Since 1985, the authors have been using madreporic coral fragments (genera Porites) as a bone graft substitute. Of the 167 coral grafts implanted, 150 were coral “corks” used to obliterate burr holes (diameter 10 mm), five were large implants (length 20 to 40 mm) to repair skull defects, and 12 were coral blocks to reconstruct the floor of the anterior cranial fossa. Previous experimental studies suggested that coral grafts would be well tolerated and become partially reossified as the calcific skeleton was resorbed. The authors describe their experience and detail the main biological properties of these materials, which appear to be very promising for use in cranial reconstructive surgery.

Information on the ecology of the "phage-bacterial host" system is given. The interaction of cultures of lactococci from the collection of the Siberian Research Institute of Cheese with associations of phages was investigated. Infection of sensitive cells with bacteriophage led to cell lysis, which was manifested by negative colonies on the lawn of a lactococcal culture. Characteristics of the biological properties of bacteriophages in the composition of phage associations are given (lytic activity, spectrum of lytic activity, specificity of action). Differentiation of species lysotypes of bacteriophages of mesophilic lactococci, selected at a single cheese enterprise in the Altai Territory was noted. The index of the lytic activity of the investigated phage associations ranged from 0.19 (sample of Lactococcus lactis subsp. Lactis biovar diacetylactis) to 0.24 (sample of Lactococcus lactis subsp. Lactis) from studied strains. The value of the lyotype updated coefficient for the entire array of data varied from 0.25 to 1.00. It is concluded that the specificity of cheese biotechnology together with the evolutionary and genetic determinants of the microworld predetermine a constant high risk of cell phagolysis of starter cultures. Experimental studies confirmed the need to consider the phagocyte of lactic acid bacteria in biotechnology.

The effect of ultraviolet radiation on pre-sowing treatment of seeds of the winter cultivar Lembke and cultivars treated with fungicides DK EXODUS, DK Exquisite and DK Exprit was studied. Experimental studies show a positive effect of UV irradiation in pre-sowing treatment of winter rapeseeds on seed vigour and germination, both when irradiated in region C (200-280 nm) and in region B (280-320 nm). It was found that UV radiation has a positive effect on the sowing qualities of winter rapeseeds varieties Lembke and DK EXODUS (treated with fungicides) when irradiated with a dose of 120 J/m2 : seed vigour increased by 11% in the variety DK EXODUS and 16.9% in the variety Lembke, germination on average by 13% compared to control samples. At doses of 250 and 500 J/m2 , a decrease in the sowing quality of seeds is observed. The main parameters of kinetic values of hydration were determined: moisture content and hydration rate. It was found that the rate of hydration increased sharply in the initial phase and gradually and slowly decreased in the middle and final phases of the hydration procedure, respectively, in order to achieve a saturated moisture content. Irradiated seeds at a dose of 120 J/m2 showed a higher rate of water absorption than the control, both in the early and later stages of the hydration procedure. It is established that UV-C irradiation changes the kinetics of water absorption by B. napus seeds at low doses of irradiation, causing faster penetration of water into the seeds and more efficient hydration of tissues, positively affecting sowing qualities and biometrics. It has been suggested that water uptake by UV-irradiated B. napus seeds causes excessive imbibition damage at higher doses of UV radiation, as the germination potential decreases and improves at low doses. No significant changes in biometric parameters were detected during UV irradiation of rapeseed varieties DK Exquisite and DK Exprit treated with fungicides and dyes.

Abstract Background Mercurius corrosivus 30CH promoted -amylase activity in a cell free medium invitro. -amylase causes hydrolysis of starch. The activity of the enzyme is measured in terms of the amount of maltose liberated due to breakdown of starch. In a number of experimental studies it has been demonstrated that the effect of homeopathic potency would be transmitted from one plant to another through water. Here one leaf of a pair of plants was dipped in water in a beaker. The two beakers were connected by a water filled polythene tube. The effect of treatment of one plant with homeopathic potency would be observed in the directly treated plant as well as the connected plant. Two groups of toads were kept in water in two different containers. The two containers were connected by a water filled polythene tube. The effect of treatment of one group of toads with homeopathic potency would be observed in both the directly treated group as well as the connected group. Objectives The purpose of the present study is to see whether the effect of Mercurius corrosivus 30 CH on -amylase in one test tube would be transmitted to another test tube connected with the former by water filled capillary tube. Methods Mercurius corrosivus 30 CH was diluted with distilled water (1:100). Two hard glass test tubes each containing -amylase were connected with a water filled capillary tube while one test tube received Mercurius corrosivus 30CH solution, the other only the control solution. The control solution consisted of equal amount of 90% ethanol diluted with water (1:100).There were two more test tubes, one containing same amount of distilled water instead of Mercurius corrosivus 30 CH solution and the other test tube the same amount of 90% ethanol (1:100) as in the control set. After 10 mins starch solution in Sodium acetate buffer was added to each test tube. The enzyme in each test tube was allowed to react with starch for 15 mins and then it was stopped by DNSA (Dinitro salicylic acid) solution .The activity of -amylase was measured by standard biochemical process. The breakdown product maltose in each test tube was quantified by a standard curve prepared by measuring the optical density of the maltose solution at 560 nm in a UV-VIS Spectrophotometer. This experiment was repeated 20 times. Results Activity of -amylase was expressed in terms of the amount of maltose liberated from breakdown of starch with standard errors in 15mins at a fixed temperature. Adiponectin is an insulin-sensitizing adipokine possessing multiple beneficial effects on obesity-related medical complications. This adipokine is secreted from adipocytes into the circulation as three oligomeric isoforms, including trimer, hexamer and the high molecular weight (HMW) oligomeric complex. Each oligomeric isoform of adiponectin possesses distinct biological properties and activates different signaling pathways in various target tissues. The hepato-protective activities have been demonstrated by many clinical and experimental studies. The decreased level of serum adiponectin represents an independent risk factor for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and liver dysfunctions in humans. In animals, elevation of circulating adiponectin by either pharmacological or genetic approaches leads to a significant alleviation of hepatomegaly, steatosis and necro-inflammation associated with various liver diseases. In adiponectin knockout mice, there is a pre-existing condition of hepatic steatosis and mitochondria dysfunction, which might contribute to the increased vulnerabilities of these mice to the secondary liver injuries induced by obesity and other conditions. This review aims to summarize recent advances on delination of the structural, molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the hepato-protective properties of adiponectin.

Lamium album, commonly known as white dead nettle, is a plant in the family of Lamiaceae. This plant is distributed all over Asia, Europe, and Africa. In the traditional medicine of Asia, it has been used for the treatment of a number of diseases such as trauma, fracture, paralysis, leucorrhoea, hypertension women’s pain, uterine hemorrhage, menorrhagia, vaginal and cervical inflammation. In recent years, L. album has been the subject of intensive experimental studies to evaluate its traditional use to reveal new biological properties. A wide range of pharmacological effects, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antidiabetic properties have been reported by these studies. This review presents an up-to-date overview of the current literature on the pharmacological and physiological effects of L. album. Also, phytochemical constituents responsible for the biological properties of L. album are presented and discussed.
