Our study investigated the difference in achievement between two groups of high school students – those who took shorter tests more frequently, and those who took longer tests less frequently. Both tests types tested listening, reading and writing skills. Th e results showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups, and the participants’ preferences as to the length and frequency of tests indicated a difference of only just above fi ve percentage points in favour of shorter and more frequent tests. Teachers should thus examine their students’ attitudes and motivation, adapt their revision lessons and teaching material accordingly, and construct the most appropriate instrument for testing their students’ achievement.

The chemistry teaching at Vocational High School which tends to be theoretical and not directly connected to vocational lesson has caused students to have low interest, low motivation, and low achievement. The problem is becoming more complex due to limited time allotment and limited teaching materials. One of the efforts to solve the problem is by providing the relevant teaching material using contextual learning approach. The aims of this Research and Development (R&D) research are: (1) to produce an appropriate chemistry teaching material on electrochemistry integrated with skill program subjects using Contextual approach for Vocational High School students of Machinery Engineering Department; (2) to know the feasibility of development result of teaching material. The development of the teaching material uses 4D developmental model from Thiagarajan et al consisting of four phases namely Define, Design, Develop, and Desiminate. The dominate phase was not done. The scores of evaluation of the feasibility or the appropriateness of the product from the content expert are 88.75% (very feasible) for the teachers’ book and 91.25% (very feasible) for the students’ book. The expert on media gave 89.25% (very feasible) for the teachers’ book and 89.9% (very feasible) for the students’ book. The result of readability test shows that the teachers’ book is feasible (83.81%) and the students’ book is very feasible (93.61%).

Keywords: Teaching material on electrochemistry, Machinery Engineering Department of Vocational High School, Contextual Approach

AbstractThis research is motivated by the collapse of the value of character education that is being planted by students, especially high school students. The teenage age instability, students are easily influenced by the social environment; to avoid this they must get used to love reading, namely reading novels. Many life values can be taken from this novel, especially in the value of character education so it can motivate readers about the world of education that can be used as a model in behave. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The object of this research is the novel Sekolah Pohon by Eko Kusumawijaya. Data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis techniques with assessment and description of the data that had been obtained. The method of data collection is done by conducting literature studies. The result of this study are: (1) the value of character education in the novel Sekolah Pohon by Eko Kusumawijaya uses a pragmatic approach which includes religious values, honesty, discipline, hard work, creative, independent, curiosity, democratic, appreciate achievement, friendly/communicative, love of peace, likes to read, environmental care, social care, and responsibility; and (2) the novel Sekolah Pohon by Eko Kusumawijaya has relevance as a literary teaching material in high school in accordance with the syllabus and lesson plans. Keywords: novel, value of character education, pragmatic approach, teaching material

Cell division is an abstract material for middle school students in which learning resources and supporting learning media are compulsory to use. This research and development aimed at developing learning supplement book of mitotic cell material for IX graders which eases them to identify cell division, particularly in mitotic phase. This study was developed based on ADDIE model which comprised of four stages (i.e. Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The validation test was conducted by teaching and learning material experts. The two stage tests were conducted in small and large trial groups. The qualitative and quantitative data gained were analyzed using percentage. The results showed that the percentage values were 86.2% (very feasible) for teaching material, 99.4% (very feasible) for learning material. The small-scale trial gained 87.8% (very feasible), meanwhile the large-scale test gained 88.3% (very feasible). In conclusion, the mitotic learning supplement book of cell division material for junior high school can be used as teaching material in classroom learning activities.

The teaching material for Physics based on collaborative creativity learning (CCL) model is by design to improve scientific creativity, collaborative skills, and science process skills of junior high school students. The focus of this research is to analyze the teaching materials based on CCL model in terms of their validity (content and construct, reliable) and effectiveness to improve students’ scientific creativity in the science lesson, particularly for Physics education. The validity and effectiveness of the teaching material were measured by using Validation Assessment Sheet (VAS) and Scientific Creativity Assessment Sheet (SCAS). The data were analysed through mean validity score, Cronbach’s coefficient alpha, Wilcoxon test, N-gain, and Mann Whitney test. The results of this study include: (1) validity of the the CCL-based teaching materials for Physics fulfill validity criteria (valid and reliable); (2) in terms of components of validity, the CCL-based teaching materials for Physics: (a) there is an increase of students’ scientific creativity with the alpha of α = 0.05, (b) the average score of students’ scientific creativity was in medium category, and (c) there is no significant different improvement (consistent) of scientific creativity skills in all groups. The implication of this developmental research of CCL-based teaching materials for Physics has proven to be valid and effective to increase the scientific creativity of junior high school students, particularly in Motions and Simple Machine chapters.

Historical teaching material is one of the medias in the form of printed material. Historical teaching material is important used in historical learning because historical teaching material contains some historical facts which can help to improve the students’ ability of historical explanation. The results of the research conducted shown that the use of historical teaching material is very minimum as well as the use of historical teaching material which contains local history. The implementation of historical teaching material uses the cooperative learning model namely problem based learning (PBL). Based on the existed theories, the cooperative learning can stimulate the ability owned by students including the ability to think critically and construct the existed knowledge of historical facts. Based on the things, it is needed to develop a historical teaching material which contains local history material to improve the Senior High School students’ ability of historical explanation. The method used in this research is quasi experiment with two classes divided into one controlled class and one experimental class. This research took the students of XI grade in SMA Negeri 1 Lawang Kidul the Regency of Muara Enim as the sample. This research tested the effectiveness of students’ ability of historical explanation and obtained the following calculation results: the post-test average of experimental class is 74,17 and the post-test average of controlled class is 65,67 and it continued with the results of T-test with a score of 4,510 and the significance average of 0,000<0,025.
