China’s long-standing urban-rural dichotomy has led to a widening gap between urban and rural areas, posing a huge challenge to the sustainable development of Chinese society. This paper adopted the subjective-objective weighting method, coupled coordination degree model, and geographically weighted regression model to conduct urban-rural sustainable development research on 31 provincial administrative regions in China and discussed their spatial-temporal divergence and driving mechanisms during 2007–2018. The results showed that (1) the quality of both rural revitalization and new urbanization improved during the study period, and the gap between them showed a trend of increasing after fluctuations. Both of them had significant spatial and temporal divergence characteristics. (2) The urban-rural coupling coordination degree in China continued to increase during the study period and showed an overall pattern of “high in the east-west and low in the north and southwest”. The changes of relative development type indicated that new urbanization had far surpassed rural revitalization during the study period. (3) The coefficients of driving factors varied significantly in space, showing a hierarchical band distribution. Seven of the eight driving factors showed a strong positive correlation in the vast majority of regions. The results and suggestions of this research can further promote the organic combination of rural revitalization and new urbanization strategy, which is of great practical significance for narrowing the urban-rural gap and realizing sustainable urban-rural development. Likewise, it can be a reference for other developing countries around the world.

The construction of characteristic town which derives from Zhejiang is a new exploration for Zhejiang Province to adapt to the economic development. Being reliant on the construction experience of small towns in Zhejiang and other provinces and municipalities, China puts forward the requirement for the construction of characteristic towns nationwide. The development level of characteristic towns nationwide is an important factor which influences the regional economic transformation and upgrading and drives the new urbanization and new rural construction. Based on the analysis of development level and current standardization of characteristic towns, relevant suggestions are raised on the characteristic and sustainable development of characteristic towns.

In this study, considering the traditional geometric operation laws and Pythagorean fuzzy information, we propose a variety of new distance measures of Pythagorean fuzzy sets such as generalized Pythagorean fuzzy geometric distance (GPFGD) measures and generalized Pythagorean fuzzy weighted geometric distance (GPFWGD) measures. Besides, some special issues including Hamming distance, Euclidean distance, and Hausdorff distance of these raised geometric distance measures are investigated. To testify the valid of these new presented distance measures, we build a decision-making model illustrated by a mathematical calculation example to evaluate the sustainable development of new urbanization from the perspective of urban agglomeration using Pythagorean fuzzy information.

The new urbanization has a connotation of human-centered urbanization, covering the synchronization of informatization, industrialization, agricultural modernization and urbanization, the optimization of layout, ecological civilization, cultural inheritance, and the realization of balanced and sustainable development among population, economy, society, resources and environment. Taking the path of new urbanization is the development direction of Chinese cities in the future. It is an important measure taken by the Chinese government to implement the new concept of development to promote the optimization and upgrading of the industrial structure and achieve balanced development between ecological and ecological protection and economic and social development. In this paper, firstly, based on the relevant theories of urbanization at home and abroad, the evaluation index system of urban sustainable development is constructed in five dimensions: economic market driving force, population and social development force, resources and environment carrying capacity, public service guarantee force, and urban-rural integration and aggregation force to study the cities and counties in the Beibu Gulf urban agglomeration region. Then, the factor analysis method is used to perform sub-item and comprehensive evaluation on the urban sustainable development capability. Finally, combined with the development characteristics of each city in the urban agglomeration, relevant development strategies and suggestions are put forward to provide reference for the development of urbanization.
