Abstract Behavioural innovativeness is important for colonising new habitats; however, it is also costly. Along the colonisation event of a simple, stable and isolated habitat offering only new food sources, one could hypothesize that the colonising individuals are more innovative than the average in their source population, showing preference to the new resource, while after colonisation, the adapted population will lose its innovativeness and become specialised to the new resource. To test this hypothesis, we compared food preference and food type innovation of a cave-dwelling waterlouse (Asellus aquaticus) population (genetically isolated for at least 60 000 years) to three surface-dwelling populations, also sampling individuals that have recently entered the cave (‘colonists’). In the cave, the only food sources are endogenous bacterial mats, while surface populations feed on various living and dead plant material together with their fungal and bacterial overgrow. We assayed all populations with the familiar and unfamiliar food types from the natural habitats and two novel food types not occurring in the natural habitats of the species. We found that all populations preferred surface to cave food and consumed the unnatural novel food types. Surface populations avoided cave food and colonists spent the most time with feeding on surface food. We conclude that the cave population maintained its preference for surface food and did not lose its food type innovativeness. We suggest that adapting to the special cave food was a major challenge in colonising the cave. Significance statement Behavioural innovativeness is a key trait for adapting to environmental changes or to colonise new habitats. However, it has developmental and maintenance costs due to the high energy need of the necessary sensory and neural organs. Therefore, we asked whether behavioural innovativeness decreases after colonising an isolated, stable and highly specialised habitat. By comparing food type innovativeness of surface-dwelling populations of waterlouse (Asellus aquaticus) to a population that has colonised a cave at least 60 000 years ago, we found that the high innovativeness towards unnatural food was retained in the cave population. Further, all populations preferred surface food (decaying leaves), with surface populations almost completely avoiding cave food (endogenous bacteria mats). We suggest that (i) food type innovativeness is evolutionary rigid in our system and (ii) the cave food was rather an obstacle against than a trigger of cave colonisation.

In the social transmission of food preference paradigm, naive observer rats acquire safety information about novel food sources in the environment through social interaction with a demonstrator rat that has recently eaten said food. Research into the behavioural mechanisms governing this form of learning has found that observers show increased reliance on socially acquired information when the state of the environment makes personal examination of their surroundings risky. We aimed to (1) determine whether reliance on social information would decrease if previous reliance on social learning was unsuccessful, and (2) whether reliance on the specific demonstrator that had transmitted poor information would similarly decrease. By inducing illness in observers following consumption of a socially demonstrated food, we created an environmental situation in which reliance on socially acquired information was maladaptive. We found that under these conditions, observers showed no change in their reliance on a specific demonstrator or socially learned information in general. Our experiment also unexpectedly produced results showing that recent demonstrators were more influential in later transmissions than demonstrators that had been learned from less recently. Notably, this effect only emerged when the observer simultaneously interacted with both demonstrators, indicating that demonstrators must be in direct competition for this effect to manifest.

Abstract After its initial discovery in California in 2008, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura has become one of the most important invasive agricultural pest insects across climate zones in much of Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. Populations of D. suzukii have demonstrated notable behavioral and physiological plasticity, adapting to diverse environmental and climatic conditions, interspecific competition, novel food sources, and potential predators. This adaptability and plasticity have enabled rapid range expansion and diversified niche use by D. suzukii, making it a species particularly suited to changing habitats and conditions. This article reviews factors and evidence that influence plasticity in D. suzukii and promotes this species’ invasiveness.

AbstractObjective:Dietary fibre is essential for a healthy diet; however, intake is often inadequate. Understanding of sources of dietary fibre and familial factors associated with intake in adolescents is limited, hampering efforts to increase intake. We aimed to determine adequacy of dietary fibre intake in adolescents, examine how intake changes from mid to late adolescence, identify major food sources and explore associations with familial factors.Design:Dietary fibre intake measured with semi-quantitative FFQ and sources calculated with the AUSNUT database. Familial factors determined by questionnaire.Setting:Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study.Participants:Generation 2 adolescents from the 14- (n 1626) and 17-year (n 835) follow-ups.Results:Mean intake of dietary fibre did not meet national dietary guidelines other than for females aged 14 years. Mean intake of both sexes was lower at 17 years (23·0 (sd 10·0) g/d) than at 14 years (24·3 (sd 9·0) g/d, P < 0·001). The quantity of dietary fibre consumed per megajoule also decreased (2·6 (sd 0·7) g/MJ at 14 years, 2·5 (sd 0·9) g/MJ at 17 years, P = 0·007). The greatest source of dietary fibre was cereals and grains, followed by fruits, then vegetables. In multivariable mixed-model analysis, female sex, Caucasian race, age 14 years, good family functioning, high level of parental education and high energy intake were independently associated with higher dietary fibre intake.Conclusions:Our study highlights an age range and characteristics of adolescents lacking in dietary fibre, thereby identifying target populations for interventions to improve dietary fibre intake across adolescence, which would lead to better health.

An investigation was undertaken to establish ifGammarus pulexandAsellus aquaticuspreferred a diet of unconditioned, artificially or naturally conditioned alder leaves (Alnus glutinosa). Standardised, 24 hourex situfeeding assays were undertaken with both species to determine their food preference. The results showed thatA. aquaticusate more leaf material compared toG. pulex(Z 23.909,P0.001) when exposed to all three test variables. Also, bothG. pulexandA. aquaticusdemonstrated a preference for naturally conditioned leaves compared to the other two variables, with unconditioned leaves proving the least popular food option for both macroinvertebrates (Z 18.803, ). However, both species ate varying amounts of all the leaf treatments (Z 136.399, ). Subsequently, the author outlined a feeding methodology for natural alder leaf conditioning that could be used during a laboratory breeding programme.

AbstractEphestia kuehniella(Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) andSitotroga cerealella(Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) are important factitious hosts used for production of biological control agents. Their differences in terms of biology and behavior require adjustments in their mass production, particularly when using corn or barley as food in grain or in bran. We modeled adult emergence, oviposition period and egg production along time after emergence, as a function of the food source. Significant differences between hosts or food type were found for these variables and for adult weight but not for sex ratio. Our results confirm the possibility of mass production of these hosts using corn or barley as food source. Integrating adult emergence patterns and age specific fecundity patterns into a single model, it is clear that rearingE. kuehniellaon barley would result in the highest egg output in much shorter time thanE. kuehniellaon corn orS. cerealellaon barley.

The fauna of Lake George is dominated by herbivores, in particular the fish Tilapia nilotica and Haplochromis nigripinnis , and the cyclopoid copepod Thermocyclops hyalinus . Digestion, and the assimilation of carbon from algae, by these herbivores were studied in detail. It was found that, contrary to previous observations reported in the literature, both fish and zooplankton were able to digest and assimilate blue-green algae. The diurnal feeding patterns of the herbivores were examined, and methods devised for assessing, in terms of carbon, the daily ingestion of algae. Hence, using biomass data, the total amount grazed by the herbivores was calculated. Estimates of carbon requirements at other trophic levels were made, as was an assessment of the required level of net production by the algae for comparison with figures for standing crop and net algal production measured by other means. Food selection by secondary and tertiary producers is discussed, and in several species age correlated changes in selectivity were examined. Both the major herbivorous species of fish adopt phytoplankton feeding after a period of carnivorous or omnivorous feeding as fry. Thermocyclops hyalinus is herbivorous all its life, but the size of particle taken changes with age. There are more species of carnivorous than herbivorous fish and these exploit a wider variety of food sources; the few species studied also show changes in food preference with age.

 Background: Undernutrition is still the major of nutritional problem in Indonesia. Toddlers are one of age group that are susceptible to nutritional problems.  One of the direct cause of malnutrition  is nutrient intake.  Low intake of energy, protein and fat causes the utilization of nutrient intake become not optimal and susceptible to infectious diseases. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between energy, protein and fat intake with underweight toddlers aged 24-59 months. Methods: This research used a cross sectional study design with a sample size of 62  toddlers that living in the Suci Village Gresik. Data were collected by interview with questionnaires that related to the characteristic of toddlers and parents, form food recall 2x24 hours and measurement of weight toddlers based on WAZ index.  Data were analyzed using fisher exact test. Results: Underweight toddlers have lower intake of energy, protein and fat intake than non underweight toddlers. The results showed that there are 79.0% non underweight toddlers and 21.0% underweight, most of toddlers have adequate levels of energy, protein and fat intake. There was a correlation between energy (p=0.007), protein(p=0.039) and fat intake(p=0.010) with nutritional status of toddlers based on WAZ index.  Conclusions: It was suggested to increase the varied  and  food sources of  high energy, protein and fat, so the malnutrition can’t getting worse.ABSTRAK Latar Belakang:  Gizi kurang masih menjadi masalah gizi utama di Indonesia. Balita merupakan salah satu kelompok usia yang rentan mengalami masalah gizi. Penyebab langsung terjadinya gizi kurang salah satunya dipengaruhi oleh asupan zat gizi. Asupan energi, protein dan lemak yang rendah menyebabkan pemanfaatan zat gizi tidak optimal dan rentan mengalami penyakit infeksi.         Tujuan: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menganalisis hubungan asupan energi, protein dan lemak dengan kejadian gizi kurang balita usia 24-59 bulan. Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan desain studi cross sectional  dengan jumlah sampel 62 balita yang tinggal di wilayah Desa Suci Gresik. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara dengan kuesioner terk1q`3aq15b`6aait karakteristik balita dan orangtua, form food recall 2x24 jam dan pengukuran berat badan balita menggunakan indikator BB/U. Data dianalisis menggunakan uji fisher exact.Hasil:  Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan balita dengan status gizi baik 79,0% dan balita gizi kurang 21,0%. Sebagian besar balita memiliki tingkat asupan energi, lemak dan protein dalam kategori cukup. Terdapat  hubungan antara asupan energi (p=0,007), protein (p=0,039) dan lemak (p=0,010) dengan status gizi balita berdasarkan indeks BB/U. Kesimpulan: Balita gizi kurang memiliki tingkat asupan energi, protein dan lemak lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan balita gizi baik. Perlu meningkatkan asupan bahan makanan sumber energi, protein dan lemak yang tinggi serta bervariasi agar kondisi gizi kurang tidak semakin memburuk.

Social learning is a primary mechanism for information acquisition in social species. Despite many benefits, social learning may be disadvantageous when independent learning is more efficient. For example, searching independently may be more advantageous when food sources are ephemeral and unpredictable. Individual differences in cognitive abilities can also be expected to influence social information use. Specifically, better spatial memory can make a given environment more predictable for an individual by allowing it to better track food sources. We investigated how resident food-caching chickadees discovered multiple novel food sources in both harsher, less predictable high elevation and milder, more predictable low elevation winter environments. Chickadees at high elevation were faster at discovering multiple novel food sources and discovered more food sources than birds at low elevation. While birds at both elevations used social information, the contribution of social learning to food discovery was significantly lower at high elevation. At both elevations, chickadees with better spatial cognitive flexibility were slower at discovering food sources, likely because birds with lower spatial cognitive flexibility are worse at tracking natural resources and therefore spend more time exploring. Overall, our study supported the prediction that harsh environments should favour less reliance on social learning.

AbstractOryzaephilus surinamensis is one of the stored product insect that commonly found in Malaysia. The biological study through host range or food preferences of O. surinamensis is important for the development of sustainable management practice to control its infestation. The objective of this study was to identify the food preference of O. surinamensis to different plant products in relation to food type and moisture content. Twenty adult of O. surinamensis were exposed to three different group of food; dried fruits (date, raisin, apricot, fig), grain/cereals (rice, barley, oat grout, dried maize), and nuts (almond, ground nut, walnut, cashew nut) for 240h in laboratory Kulliyyah of Science, IIUM Kuantan. Moisture content in each food was also measured. It was found out that the most preferred food by O. surinamensis is oat groat of cereal grain group with medium level of moisture content. Further analysis on food moisture suggested that under current experimental conditions (temperature of 27℃ and 64% relative humidity within 240h of exposure), food moisture content does not affect pest infestation and distribution.

In the wild, nonhuman primates' preferences for some food may not be quite clear due to the seasonality and utilization of fallback foods during periods of scarcity. Understanding the most preferred foods could aid schedules of serving them to captive primates. Against this background, the study was carried out to determine the food preference of captive mona monkeys offered foods consumed by their counterparts in the degraded and fragmented urban forest, biodiversity rich rainforest, and in a zoo. The feeding trials were conducted in the service area of the University of Lagos. Four adult monkeys (two males and two females) were offered weighed amounts of 13 different foods served in batches of five, using the cafeteria method. Each food type was offered separately in a food trough at 10:00 hrs each day. Left over was withdrawn and measured after 24 hours. Position of the food trough was changed every day. Water was provided ad libitum in a water trough. The difference between offered and left-over weights was regarded as intake. Food preference was determined from the coefficient of preference (COP), and a unitary value was considered preferred. In decreasing order of preference, the preferred foods that had COP ≥ 1 were Musa sapientum, Zea mays, and Solanum melongena. The mona monkey and other sympatric species held in captivity could be provided with these foods in addition to other foods that could meet their nutritional needs. Nutritional assays of these foods could provide clues to their being preferred above others.     Dans la nature, les préférences des primates non humains pour certains aliments peuvent ne pas être tout à fait claires en raison de la saisonnalité et de l'utilisation des aliments de remplacement pendant les périodes de pénurie. Comprendre les aliments les plus préférés pourrait faciliter les horaires de les servir aux primates captifs. Dans ce contexte, l'étude a été menée pour estimer la préférence alimentaire des singes mona en captivité qui offraient des aliments consommés par leurs homologues dans la forêt urbaine dégradée et fragmentée, la forêt tropicale riche en biodiversité et dans un zoo. Les essais d'alimentation ont été menés dans l’aire de service de l'Université de Lagos. Quatre singes adultes (deux mâles et deux femelles) se sont vus offrir des quantités pesées de 13 aliments différents servis par lots de cinq, en utilisant la méthode de la cafétéria. Chaque type de nourriture était offert 184 séparément dans une auge à 10 h chaque jour. Le surplus a été prélevé et mesuré après 24 heures. La position de l'auge a été changée chaque jour. L'eau était fournie à volonté dans un bac à eau. La différence entre le poids offert et le poids restant a été considérée comme un apport. La préférence alimentaire a été déterminée à partir du coefficient de préférence (COP), et une valeur unitaire a été considérée comme préférée. Par ordre décroissant de préférence, les aliments préférés qui avaient un COP ≥ 1 étaient Musa sapientum, Zeamays et Solanummelongena. Le singe mona et d'autres espèces sympatriques gardées en captivité pourraient recevoir ces aliments en plus d'autres aliments qui pourraient répondre à leurs besoins nutritionnels. Les dosages nutritionnels de ces aliments pourraient fournir des indices sur leur préférence aux autres.
