3,1,2-Ruthenadicarbadodecaborane complexes bearing the [C2B9H11]2− (dicarbollide) ligand are robust scaffolds, with exceptional thermal and chemical stability. Our previous work has shown that these complexes possess promising anti-tumor activities in vitro, and tend to form aggregates (or self-assemblies) in aqueous solutions. Here, we report on the synthesis and characterization of four ruthenium(II) complexes of the type [3-(η6-arene)-1,2-R2-3,1,2-RuC2B9H9], bearing either non-polar (R = Me (2–4)) or polar (R = CO2Me (7)) substituents at the cluster carbon atoms. The behavior in aqueous solution of complexes 2, 7 and the parent unsubstituted [3-(η6-p-cymene)-3,1,2-RuC2B9H11] (8) was investigated via UV-Vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). All complexes showed spontaneous formation of self-assemblies (108–109 particles mL−1), at low micromolar concentration, with high polydispersity. For perspective applications in medicine, there is thus a strong need for further characterization of the spontaneous self-assembly behavior in aqueous solutions for the class of neutral metallacarboranes, with the ultimate scope of finding the optimal conditions for exploiting this self-assembling behavior for improved biological performance.

A novel transition metal polyoxotungstate, [Cu(H2O)6][{Cu(H2O)2}2{Cu(H2O)4H4W12O42}] · 12H2O (1), has been synthesized in aqueous solution and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR and UV/vis spectroscopy, and TG analysis. The paradodecatungstate anions [H2W12O42]10− are linked by CuO6 octahedra, forming a three-dimensional (3D) structure. The magnetic susceptibility of compound 1 in the temperature range 2 - 300 K shows the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions within the uniform Cu2・ ・ ・Cu3 chains

This paper is the first of its kind for development of rapid and ecofriendly method for synthesis of silver nanoparticles from aqueous solution of silver nitrate using the flavonoid “hesperidin” and optimization of the methodology. There is formation of stable spherical silver nanoparticles in the size range of 20–40 nm. Optimization of methodology in terms of concentration of reactants and pH of the reaction mixture reduced the reaction time for silver nanoparticle formation to 2 mins. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). UV-vis spectroscopy derived spectrum demonstrated a peak of 430 nm which corresponds to the plasmon absorbance of silver nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy revealed spherical shaped silver nanoparticles in the size range of 20–40 nm.

Organophosphate (OP) compounds, a family of highly hazardous chemical compounds included in nerve agents and pesticides, have been linked to more than 250,000 annual deaths connected to various chronic diseases. However, a solid-state sensing system that is able to be integrated into a clothing system is rare in the literature. This study aims to develop a nanofiber-based solid-state polymeric material as a soft sensor to detect OP compounds present in the environment. Esters of polydiacetylene were synthesized and incorporated into a cellulose acetate nanocomposite fibrous assembly developed with an electrospinning technique, which was then hydrolyzed to generate more hydroxyl groups for OP binding. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Instron® tensile tester, contact angle analyzer, and UV–Vis spectroscopy were employed for characterizations. Upon hydrolysis, polydiacetylene esters in the cellulosic fiber matrix were found unaffected by hydrolysis treatment, which made the composites suitable for OP sensing. Furthermore, the nanofibrous (NF) composites exhibited tensile properties suitable to be used as a textile material. Finally, the NF composites exhibited colorimetric sensing of OP, which is visible to the naked eye. This research is a landmark study toward the development of OP sensing in a protective clothing system.

Metal colloids in 2-mercaptoethanol using nanoparticles (NPs) of iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), and nickel (Ni) were prepared by chemical liquid deposition method. Transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, UV-VIS spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy characterized the resulting colloidal dispersions. The NPs exhibited sizes with ranges from 9.8 nm for Fe, 3.7 nm for Co, and 7.2 nm for Ni. The electron diffraction shows the presence of the metals in its elemental state Fe (0), Co (0), and Ni (0) and also some compounds FeO (OH), CoCo2S4, and NiNi2S4.

Synthesis of the MIL-100 metal-organic framework particles was carried out by hydrothermal (HT) and microwave (MW)-assisted methods. Transmission electron microscopy showed formation of microparticles in the course of hydrothermal synthesis and nanoparticles for microwave-assisted synthesis. Powder X-ray diffraction confirmed formation of larger crystallites for hydrothermal synthesis. Particle aggregation in aqueous solution was observed by dynamic light scattering. However, the stability of both samples could be improved in acetic acid solution. Nitrogen sorption isotherms showed high porosity of the particles. ᶫ-leucine molecule was used as a model molecule for loading in the porous micro- and nanoparticles. Loading was estimated by FTIR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. UV-VIS spectroscopy quantified ᶫ-leucine release from the particles in aqueous solution. Cytotoxicity studies using the HeLa cell model showed that the original particles were somewhat toxic, but ᶫ-leucine loading ameliorated the toxic effects, likely due to signaling properties of the amino acid.

Optical absorption spectroscopy provides evidence for individually dispersed carbon nanotubes. A common method to disperse SWCNTs into aqueous solution is to sonicate the mixture in the presence of a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). In this paper, optical characterization of dsDNA-wrapped HiPco carbon nanotubes (dsDNA-SWCNT) was carried out using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) experiments. The findings suggest that SWCNT dispersion is very good in the environment of DNA existing. Additionally, its dispersion depends on dsDNA concentration.

The reaction of PcMCl 2 ( M = Zr , Hf ) with β-diketones is reported. 1 H NMR and elemental analysis suggest the substitution of two Cl atoms for two β-diketone fragments takes place as a result of this reaction and the complexes PcM(β-dik)2 are formed. All obtained complexes are stable and highly soluble in most organic solvents. The data from 1 H and 19 F NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy suggest the coordination of two β-diketone ligands in a cis geometry about the central atom of the macrocycle. It was shown bis(β-diketonato)zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) phthalocyanines containing β-diketones with donor or acceptor groups or with bulky substituents can be obtained.
