Carbonaceous slate is heterogeneous and anisotropic, which has a great influence on the stability of tunnel. In this paper, by means of laboratory test, field measurement, and numerical simulation, the surrounding rock stability and plastic zone distribution characteristics of the carbonaceous slate tunnel at different intersection angles are analyzed. First, combined with the Haibaluo tunnel project, Brazilian splitting and uniaxial compression tests of jointed carbonaceous slate are performed. The test results show that the tensile strength of carbonaceous slate is related to joint dip angle. When the joint angle is 0°, the tensile strength is the largest and decreases with the increase of the joint angle. The uniaxial strength of rock decreases first and then increases. Based on the discrete fracture network (DFN) technology, a calculation model is established. The calculation results show that the maximum displacement is 0.45 m, when the dip angle of the surrounding rock joint is 45°. The field measurement also shows that the dip angle of the surrounding rock joint has an important influence on the distribution of the plastic zone. When the joint dip angle is 45°, the plastic zone develops most strongly.

Based on the Mohr–Coulomb criterion, a new analytical solution of a circular opening under nonuniform pressure was presented, which considered rock dilatancy effect and elastic-brittle-plastic failure characteristics. In the plastic zone, the attenuation of Young’s modulus was considered using a radius-dependent model (RDM), and solution of the radius and radial displacement of plastic zone was obtained. The results show that many factors have important impact on the response of the surrounding rock, including lateral pressure coefficient, dilation coefficient, buried depth, and Young’s modulus attenuation. Under nonuniform pressure condition, the distribution of plastic zone and deformation around the opening show obvious nonuniform characteristic: with the increasing of lateral pressure coefficient, the range of plastic zone and deformation decrease gradually at side, while they increase at roof and floor, and the location of the maximum value of support and surrounding rock response curve transfers from side to roof. Based on the analytical results and engineering practice, an optimization method of support design was proposed for the circular opening under nonuniform pressure.

With the conformal mapping function provided by Verruijt, the outland of a noncircular tunnel can be mapped to a circular unit in the complex plane and then spread the analytic function into a Laurent series. The stress unified solution of oval and horseshoe cross section can be determined using Muskhelishvili’s complex variables function method. Subsequently, the solution can be taken into the Griffith strength failure criterion and determine the scale and shape of plastic zone in the tunnel surrounding rock. Aiming at the critical safety thickness between a concealed cave and tunnel in the karst area and determining whether the plastic zone of tunnel surrounding rock is connected with the plastic zone of cave as a judgment standard, the model of critical safety thickness among the concealed caves and tunnels is established. The numerical model is established in comparison with the computing method of rock plate critical safety thickness in actual engineering based on the Doumo tunnel engineering of Shanghai-Kunming (Guizhou segment) high-speed railway. The following conclusions can be drawn: the analytical approximation method has less indexes, and the output of this method is approximately close to actual engineering and numerical analysis, in which it is reliable and rational.

In this study, an analytical solution of stress, strain, and displacement, in the elastic and plastic zone is proposed. The solution is derived on the basis of ideal elastoplastic mechanical model of spherical salt cavern with shear dilatation behavior, by adopting Hoek-Brown (H-B) criterion. The solution obtains not only in small and large strain stage but also in creep stage. The proposed solution is validated, by comparison of the obtained results with numerical results in FLAC3D. The results indicate that the result obtained adopting the H-B criterion is closer to that one obtained adopting the Mohr-Coulomb (M-C). The H-B criterion is more applicable for the salt cavern construction as it considers the structural characteristics of the rock salt formation. The displacement difference obtained by two different methods decreases with the increase of GSI or running pressure, but it increases with the enlarged angle of dilation. The influence of different assumptions of elastic strain of plastic zone on displacements is more significant under large strain conditions. The influence of the angle of dilation on displacements is more obvious when the elastic strain of plastic zone is given to stationary values, and the influence degree increases with the enlarged angle of dilation. Under the same conditions, the creep displacement decreases with the increase of GSI, and both the creep displacement and the effect degree enhance with the enlarged dilation angle. The proposed solutions can be used in the stability analysis of surrounding rock in the construction and operation of salt cavern storage.

Large long corridor surge chambers have unique form. As a typical hydropower underground structure, its stability of surrounding rock in the process of excavation and force features of structure are affected by particular structure form. Take a hydropower station for example, by using the finite difference method, we simulated two different schemes in process of excavation and analyzed its displacement, stress, plastic zone of surrounding rock as well as force feature of structure. Appropriate law of large long corridor surge chamber during excavation is summarized which will provide the reference for the similar project.

As lack of explicit analysis method on the sequence of many factors influencing the plastic zone extension of surrounding rock, the grey correlation analysis method is adopted to study the relationship between the plastic zone extension radius Rp and the six factors such as cohesive c, internal friction angle φ, deformation modulus E, unit weight γ, initial ground stress σ and the radius of chamber r. By dealing with dimensionless, the corresponding sequences composed with the sensitive factors as sub-sequence and the plastic zone extension radius as mother sequence are obtained. The gray correlation analysis model of sensitive factors which evaluates the results with grey correlation degree is built by the methods of dimensionless and extreme difference variation. Then, an engineering example is analyzed with grey correlation. Based on the analysis results, the sorting of sensitive factors is φ > σ > c > r > E > γ. It implies that the influences of internal friction angle φ and initial ground stress σ are the most prominent, and the sensitivities of deformation modulus E and unit weight γ are lowest. These are in good agreement with the analytical formula of classical theory, and can be used in guiding the further optimization and improvement of the analytical expression of the plastic zone extension radius Rp of surrounding rock.

According to the strain-softening characteristics of rock mass, an ideal elastic strain-softening model is developed, and the surrounding rock of tunnels is subdivided into the plastic broken zone, plastic strain-softening zone, and elastic zone. Based on the generalized spatially mobilized plane criterion, an elastic-plastic analytical solution of a circular tunnel is derived. The effects of intermediate principal stress, strain softening, and dilatancy are considered in the unified solution. The stress, displacement, and plastic zone radius of surrounding rock based on the SMP criterion are compared with those based on the Mohr–Coulomb criterion. Furthermore, the effects of parameters such as the softening modulus, dilatancy angle, and internal friction angle on the deformation and stress of tunnels are discussed. It has been found that the larger the dilatancy angle is, the larger the plastic zone displacement and the radius of the broken zone are. The larger the internal friction angle, the smaller the sizes of the plastic zone, the strain-softening zone, and the broken zone are. The deformation of surrounding rock in the broken zone is more sensitive to the internal friction angle than that in the strain-softening zone. The unified solution based on the SMP criterion provides a well understanding for the elastic-plastic state of tunnels, which can be the guidance for tunnel excavations and support designs.

Multi-coal-seam mining creates surrounding rock control difficulties, because the mining of a coal face in one seam can affect coal faces in another. We examine the effects of multi-coal-seam mining on the evolution of the deviatoric stress distribution and plastic zone in the roadway surrounding rock. In particular, we use numerical simulation, theoretical calculation, drilling detection, and mine pressure observation to study the distribution and evolution characteristics of deviatoric stress on Tailgate 8709 in No. 11 coal seam in Jinhuagong mine when the N8707 and N8709 coal faces in No. 7-4 coal seam and the N8707 and N8709 coal faces in No. 11 coal seam are mined. The evolution laws of deviatoric stress and the plastic zone of roadway surrounding rock in the advance and behind sections of the coal face are studied, and a corresponding control technology is proposed. The results show that the peak value of deviatoric stress increases with the advance of the coal face, and the positions of the peak value of deviatoric stress and the plastic zone become deeper. The deflection angle of the peak stress after mining at each coal face and the characteristics of the peak zone of deviatoric stress and the plastic zone of the roadway surrounding rock under the disturbance of multi-coal-seam mining are determined. In conclusion, the damage range in the roadway roof in the solid-coal side and coal pillar is large and must be controlled. A combined support technology based on high-strength and high pretension anchor cables and truss anchor cables is proposed; long anchor cables are used to strengthen the support of the roadway roof in the solid-coal side and coal pillar. The accuracy of the calculated plastic zone range and the reliability of the combined support technology are verified through drilling detection and mine pressure observation on site. This research can provide a point of reference for roadway surrounding rock control under similar conditions.

Considering the effect of seepage force, a dimensionless approach was introduced to improve the stress and strain increment approach on the stresses and radial displacement around a circular tunnel excavated in a strain-softening generalized Hoek–Brown or Mohr–Coulomb rock mass. The circular tunnel can be simplified as axisymmetric problem, and the plastic zone was divided into a finite number of concentric rings which satisfy the equilibrium and compatibility equations. Increments of stresses and strains for each ring were obtained by solving the equilibrium and compatibility equations. Then, the stresses and displacements in softening zone can be calculated. The correctness and reliability of the proposed approach were performed by the existing solutions.
