Carbonaceous slate is heterogeneous and anisotropic, which has a great influence on the stability of tunnel. In this paper, by means of laboratory test, field measurement, and numerical simulation, the surrounding rock stability and plastic zone distribution characteristics of the carbonaceous slate tunnel at different intersection angles are analyzed. First, combined with the Haibaluo tunnel project, Brazilian splitting and uniaxial compression tests of jointed carbonaceous slate are performed. The test results show that the tensile strength of carbonaceous slate is related to joint dip angle. When the joint angle is 0°, the tensile strength is the largest and decreases with the increase of the joint angle. The uniaxial strength of rock decreases first and then increases. Based on the discrete fracture network (DFN) technology, a calculation model is established. The calculation results show that the maximum displacement is 0.45 m, when the dip angle of the surrounding rock joint is 45°. The field measurement also shows that the dip angle of the surrounding rock joint has an important influence on the distribution of the plastic zone. When the joint dip angle is 45°, the plastic zone develops most strongly.

Through theoretical calculation, the stress and deformation of surrounding rock can be analyzed, providing guidance for the support design and optimization of soft rock roadways. In this paper, theoretical solutions for both the optimal support pressure and the allowable maximum displacement of surrounding rock are derived from the Drucker–Prager (DP) yield criteria and the steady creep criterion expressed by the third invariant of deviator stress. The DP criterion with different parameters is compared and analyzed with an engineering example. Then, based on the calculation results the effects of long-term strength, cohesion, and internal friction angle of soft rock on the maximum plastic zone radius and allowable maximum displacement of roadway are discussed. The results show that the optimal support solution of soft rock roadways based on the DP criteria can not only reasonably reflect the intermediate principal stress but can also be used to compare and discuss the influence of different DP criteria on the calculation results. The higher the long-term strength of the rock surrounding a roadway is, the smaller the optimal support force is and the larger the allowable maximum displacement is. When the calculated long-term strength of soft rock can ensure that the deformation of the roadway does not exceed the allowable maximum displacement, the roadway can maintain long-term stability without support. With an increase in the cohesion or internal friction angle of soft rock, the radius of the plastic zone decreases gradually and the allowable maximum displacement is reduced by degrees. The use of grouting and other means to improve the strength of surrounding rock can effectively reduce the roadway deformation and save support costs. This new theoretical solution can consider different intermediate principal stress effects and different DP strength criteria, enabling the parameters to become easier to determine. It has a wider range of applications, and the calculation results better demonstrate the strength potential of the surrounding rock.

In order to solve the problems of high springback of sprayed concrete and high dust concentration in the boltnetting support of underground engineering, research the mechanical properties of steel plastic geogrid and analyze the application of steel plastic geogrid replacing the metal net in the reduction of concrete through theoretical study, laboratory test, field test and contrast analysis, thus got the conclusion that: (1) Through the analysis of influence factors of the springback of surrounding rock supporting sprayed concrete, classification is carried on with the sampling survey method. The interaction between the metal net and concrete is the main factor to influence the springback of the concrete. (2) Study the performance differences of the steel plastic geogrid and the metal net. With the advantages of tensile strength, strong durability and injection connection, steel plastic geogrid has stronger applicability, safety and stability in adjusting the stress of the surrounding rock of the roadway and coordinating its deformation. (3)Through the tensile test and the deflection test, study the relationship between the tensile strength and external load under different aperture, thus establish the relation curve between the maximum deflection and load. (4) Through the roadway engineering construction and the analysis of the data of the field test, steel plastic geogrid can greatly reduce the springback of sprayed concrete which can guide the design and construction of underground bolt-netting support engineering.

The stress and strain of surrounding rock and the development of plastic zone in the process of excavation of large underground cavern group have been the main concern of the design unit. The numerical simulation software is used to analyze the stability of caverns of an underground pumping station. The stress and displacement of the surrounding rock and the development of the plastic zone in the process of excavation are analyzed in detail. The results show that the tensile stress is easily generated in the side wall, and the maximum value can reach 4 M Pa. Correspondingly, the maximum displacement of the side wall part can reach 4 cm. The plastic zone is mainly concentrated in the surrounding rock near the side wall, the thickness can reach about 9 m. In general, the excavation of underground caverns is basically stable.

China is one of the leading countries in the mining and utilization of coal resources, and the problems of coal-mining technology and safety have been concerned by the world, while the serious deformation and destruction of surrounding rock and the difficulty of support have brought inconvenience to the mining of coal resources due to repeated mining. This paper takes the actual engineering 22205 mining roadway in Buertai mine as the research background, through the combination of numerical simulation and field measurement. In this paper, the stress environment, plastic zone, and surrounding rock deformation in the advancing process of coal-mining face are studied, and the stress evolution law of surrounding rock in repeated mining roadway is obtained. It is clarified that the surrounding rock deformation is the failure mechanism under the combined action of principal stress difference and stress direction deflection. As a result, the surrounding rock of the roadway is asymmetrically deformed and destroyed, and the corresponding surrounding rock control scheme is put forward. The results show that the influence of repeated mining on roadway stress environment can be divided into four stages with the mining process: the stability stage of mining influence, the expansion stage of primary mining, the stable stage after primary mining, and the expansion stage of second mining. At the same time, the shape changes of the plastic zone and the displacement monitoring results of the monitoring are analyzed, and the results are obtained; the stage of stress change is suitable, and combined with the failure characteristics of surrounding rock in each stage, it is put forward that reinforcement measures should be taken in the stable stage after mining; the specific reinforcement scheme is determined according to the expansion form of plastic zone and field measurement. The on-site monitoring shows that there is no roof fall accident during the use of the roadway, which ensures the safety in production.

Purpose Vibratory weld conditioning parameters have a great influence on the improvement of mechanical properties of weld connections. The purpose of this paper is to understand the influence of vibratory weld conditioning on the mechanical and microstructural characterization of aluminum 5052 alloy weldments. An attempt is made to understand the effect of the vibratory tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process parameters on the hardness, ultimate tensile strength and microstructure of Al 5052-H32 alloy weldments. Design/methodology/approach Aluminum 5052 H32 specimens are welded at different combinations of vibromotor voltage inputs and time of vibrations. Voltage input is varied from 50 to 230 V at an interval of 10 V. At each voltage input to the vibromotor, there are three levels of time of vibration, i.e. 80, 90 and 100 s. The vibratory TIG-welded specimens are tested for their mechanical and microstructural properties. Findings The results indicate that the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy weld connections improved by increasing voltage input up to 160 V. Also, it has been observed that by increasing vibromotor voltage input beyond 160 V, mechanical properties were reduced significantly. It is also found that vibration time has less influence on the mechanical properties of weld connections. Improvement in hardness and ultimate tensile strength of vibratory welded joints is 16 and 14%, respectively, when compared without vibration, i.e. normal weld conditions. Average grain size is measured as per ASTM E 112–96. Average grain size is in the case of 0, 120, 160 and 230 is 20.709, 17.99, 16.57 and 20.8086 µm, respectively. Originality/value Novel vibratory TIG welded joints are prepared. Mechanical and micro-structural properties are tested.

In view of the special requirements of rails to ensure the safe and stable operation of Railways in China, the formation characteristics of austenite grains in high carbon rail are revealed through industrial exploration, the process of industrial rail heating and rolling is simulated, innovative experimental research methods such as different heating and heat treatment are carried out on the actual rails in the laboratory. Transfer characteristics of austenite grain size, microstructures and key properties of high carbon rail during the process are also revealed. The results show that the austenite grain size of industrial produced U75V rail is about 9.0 grade. When the holding temperature is increased from 800 C to 1300 C, the austenite grain size of high carbon rail steel decreases, the austenite grain are gradually coarsened, and the tensile strength increases slightly. The tensile strength is affected by the heating temperature. With the increase of heating temperature, the elongation and impact toughness of high carbon rail decrease. The heating temperature of high carbon rail combined with austenite grain size shows that the heating temperature has a great influence on austenite grain size, and has the most obvious influence on the toughness of high carbon rail.

Based on the Mohr–Coulomb criterion, a new analytical solution of a circular opening under nonuniform pressure was presented, which considered rock dilatancy effect and elastic-brittle-plastic failure characteristics. In the plastic zone, the attenuation of Young’s modulus was considered using a radius-dependent model (RDM), and solution of the radius and radial displacement of plastic zone was obtained. The results show that many factors have important impact on the response of the surrounding rock, including lateral pressure coefficient, dilation coefficient, buried depth, and Young’s modulus attenuation. Under nonuniform pressure condition, the distribution of plastic zone and deformation around the opening show obvious nonuniform characteristic: with the increasing of lateral pressure coefficient, the range of plastic zone and deformation decrease gradually at side, while they increase at roof and floor, and the location of the maximum value of support and surrounding rock response curve transfers from side to roof. Based on the analytical results and engineering practice, an optimization method of support design was proposed for the circular opening under nonuniform pressure.

Highway tunnel plays an increasingly prominent role in the development of high-grade highway traffic in mountainous countries or regions. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the deformation characteristics of the surrounding rock of a six-lane multiarch tunnel under different excavation conditions. Using the three-dimensional indoor model test and finite element analysis, this paper studies the dynamic mechanical behavior of a six-lane construction, reveals the whole process of the surrounding rock deformation process of class II surrounding rock under different excavation conditions, and puts forward the best construction and excavation method. The results show that the maximum displacement rate of excavation scheme III is the largest, and the maximum displacement rate of excavation scheme I is basically the same as that of excavation scheme II. Therefore, in terms of controlling the displacement rate of the surrounding rock, the effect of excavation scheme I is basically the same as that of excavation scheme II, while that of excavation scheme III is poor. In terms of construction technology, scheme II is simpler than scheme I and can ensure the integrity of the secondary lining. Therefore, in class II surrounding rock of the supporting project, it is recommended to adopt scheme II for construction.

To solve the problems of the rapid advance of the working face was delayed by complicated working procedure and high labor intensity, and the severe damage of roof bolt (anchor cable) induced by advanced hydraulic support, the deformation characteristics of surrounding rock, and the supporting principle of grouting truss anchor cable were analyzed theoretically by taking the roadway of 3_(down) coal seams 2326# working face in Sanhekou coal mine as the research object; then, the mechanical model of supporting structure of roadway under goaf was established. Based on this model, the optimal supporting scheme was determined, and the active advanced support technology scheme of “advanced grouting truss anchor cable” was proposed to take the place of the existing single pillar. The deformation and failure characteristics of surrounding rock of the working face leading roadway were observed and analyzed on-site. Within the allowable range of reading error, the results showed that the maximum displacement of medium-deep base point and shallow base point of two roadways was 15.2 cm and 10.9 cm, respectively; the pressure value had a more obvious jump increase when the distance between each measuring point and the working face was about 35 m, which means the range is strongly affected by the advance mining, and the area affected by advanced mining was 35 m ahead of the working face. It was observed that the lowest position of roof separation development ranged from 0.71 m to 2.73 m. The separation layer was generally distributed in the range of 0.73 m-2.49 m, and the fracture area was roughly distributed in the range of 0.01 m-0.62 m. Under the condition of overlying goaf, there was a complete stress structure, which can meet the requirements of suspension support.
