Objectives of the study are to examine the trends and percent growth rates for the area, production and productivity of different vegetable crops; ii) to estimate the trend for arrival and market prices of different vegetable crops; iii) to calculate the yearly arrival index for vegetables arrival in selected mandies, and iv) to judge integrated supply chain management of vegetables marketing in selected region. The study has been made on backward division of Uttar Pradesh named Jhansi division. Division comprises three districts: Jhansi, Lalitpur and Jalaun on the basis of secondary and primary information. The secondary information is collected for area, production, productivity, arrival and market prices of tomato, brinjal, potato, onion, okra, bottle gourd, torai and cauliflower in Jhansi, Lalitpur and Jalaun districts of Jhansi division. The primary information has been collected from Lalitpur district. There are six blocks in Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh (UP) viz. Bar, Birdha, Jakhoura, Madavra, Mahroni, and Talbehat. Two stage stratified random sampling method has been adopted to collect the information from vegetables growers of three blocks i.e., Mahroni, Birdha and Jakhoura. Total 114 vegetables growers categorized marginal (up to 2.5 acre land), small (> 2.5 acre land to 5 acre land) and Large (> 5 acre land) farmers, 22 middlemen (aadatiya) and 20 retailers have chosen to complete the present study. In the selected study area vegetables growers were not grading their produce. They picked vegetables from field and make bora bandi to carry in mandi. On the other hand the middlemen and retailers were grading the purchased vegetables for earning maximum profit. Preferred transportation modes were tractors, buses and taxies. But for retail selling cycle and haththela were mostly used. Vegetables growers did not store vegetables in home and warehouse. In Lalitpur district tomato production was highest in 2009-10, it was 2821 metric ton (MT). It was due to rise in area. Lalitpur and Jhansi districts have potential to increase the productivity of tomato through better governmental support. Percent Growth Rates (PGR) informed regarding percentage change in present year compare to previous year. The total arrival indicated presence of vegetables in the different vegetable mandies and arrival index presented vegetables consistent presence in the mandies i.e., higher the index higher amount of quantity arrived in the mandies. Under the marketing chain management the channel II was found most favored channel in the study area as maximum (about 90%) quantity of produce was sold through this channel by small and large farmers. Though channel I was mostly liked by marginal farmers. Middlemen purchased vegetables at 6 percent commission on per quintal basis from producers and sold to retailer by charging 3 percent mandishulk on per quintal basis. In Jakhoura block all the selected farm size categories and in Birdha block small and large farm size categories were sold their cent percent vegetables produce to middlemen. Middlemen also provide space to keep their produce and stay at night for farmers in mandi. At some occasions middlemen also provide credits to farmers for fulfilling their agricultural and family daily needs.

AbstractSeven radiocarbon dates of carbonate shells and charcoal from the upper two metres of sediment in the Indo-Gangetic plains of northern Bihar, eastern India, can be divided into three groups, with the following approximate ages: 2400±45 a BP (two samples), 1100±45 a BP (four samples) and 765±45 a BP (one sample). This evidence for at least three episodes of sedimentation in the last 2400 a contrasts with evidence of greater ages from similarly near-surface sediments in the middle Gangetic plains of Uttar Pradesh, further west. In these more westerly areas, greater ages and well-developed river terraces point to much more restricted late Holocene sedimentation. Rates of net sediment accumulation calculated using our Bihar ages, spanning a period of the order of 103–104 a, are similar to those calculated for periods of the order of 105–106 a for the Himalayan foreland basin. This suggests that, in the whole basin case, short-period rates higher than the Bihar rates have been compensated by longer than Bihar periods of non-deposition or erosion.

BACKGROUND Gallbladder cancer and breast cancer are two common malignancies seen along the Ganges River and the Indo-Gangetic plains of northern India, especially in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Some of the postulated aetiologies include cholelithiasis (gallstones), typhoid carrier state, dietary factors, genetic predisposition and chemical carcinogens. Studies have also linked gallbladder cancer and breast cancer to carcinogens in polluted rivers. We undertook this study to investigate as to whether these conditions and gallstones were more prevalent in populations living close to polluted rivers. We also wanted to investigate as to whether there is any association between gallbladder cancer, gallstones and breast cancer with river pollution. METHODS This was a case-control study carried out in the Department of Oncology of a tertiary level defence hospital between 2018 and 2020. Patients who were diagnosed as having gallbladder cancer, gallstones or breast cancer in this tertiary institute, and were permanent residents of Uttar Pradesh or Bihar were included in the study. RESULTS In this study, we found that patients with gallbladder cancer, gallstones and breast cancer had their home closer to the river at a distance of around 53.9, 54 and 39.1 Kms. respectively compared to controls whose homes were at a distance of 76.7 Kms. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that proximity to polluted rivers is one more factor in the aetiology of aforementioned diseases. Governmental agencies must consider monitoring and controlling the release of pollutants from the industries into the local nearby rivers. AbstractThe swamp deerRucervus duvauceliiis the largest grassland-dwelling endemic cervid of India and Nepal. With a declining population trend across its range, this species is found in fragmented habitats of northern, north-eastern and central India and south-western Nepal. The northern swamp deer subspeciesRucervus duvaucelii duvauceliioccurs in small wetland patches across the states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh in India and has lost most of its habitat in the last century. Information about the distribution of the swamp deer in the upper Gangetic plains is limited, except in the Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve in Uttarakhand and around the Bijnor barrage area of Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh. We surveyed the upper Gangetic plains between the Reserve and the Sanctuary, including some adjoining areas and three tributaries of the Ganges, to assess the status of these habitats, current swamp deer distribution and the threats faced by the species. We found several areas harbouring swamp deer within non-protected wetlands along the entire surveyed stretch of the upper Ganges and a previously unreported population in Uttar Pradesh. We documented major threats including habitat conversion, livestock grazing, poaching, conflict and other anthropogenic disturbances. We recommend community driven conservation and management ofRucervus duvaucelii duvauceliiin this fragmented landscape to ensure survival of this species and other threatened fauna of these wetlands and grasslands.

River Kosi, an important tributary of river Ramganga, is one of the important rivers of Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh After traveling for about 100 kms in lower Himalayas with higher velocity, it emerges at Ramnagar in Indo-Gangetic plains. Here, the major portion of city sewage is discharged into it. Then, it flows through the famous rice belt area of Kashipur, where a number of polluting industries discharge their highly polluted effluents into it. To determine the extent of pollution in downstream district Rampur, a study was conducted. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dilution caused by the merger of river Rajera with Kosi River. For this samples, were collected from three stations and analyzed for various parameters for the period of one year. The study revealed higher levels of industrial pollution as compared to domestic pollution. It also shows the alleviating effects of dilution caused by the merger of river Rajera.
