We all study political science, but - what do we actually do here anyway? This essay expresses our thoughts about our subject. The everyday life in University doesn’t seem to give enough space for questioning what is this all about. Maybe a debate on that issue does not exist extensively because of fears of the loss of entitlement. The aim of this essay is to support the heightening of student’s awareness about the status quo of research and teaching in political science as we can judge it from our modest experiences. Trying to get to the basis of such a problem is not easy. The things here written are surely not the state of the art, but they could shine a better light on the problem what had been called the 'politics of political science' in an earlier Internet discussion on the IAPSS website. This paper should be understood as a start for a discussion, where we all can express our surely different experiences and ideas.

Submerged systems are found in many engineering, biological, and medicinal applications. For such systems, due to the particular environmental conditions and working medium, the research on the mechanical and structural properties at every scale (from macroscopic to nanoscopic), and the control of the system dynamics and induced effects become very difficult tasks. For such purposes in submerged systems, piezoelectric patches (PZTp), which are light, small and economic, have been proved to be a very good solution. PZTp have been recently used as sensors/actuators for applications such as modal analysis, active sound and vibration control, energy harvesting and atomic force microscopes in submerged systems. As a consequence, in these applications, newly developed transducers based on PZTp have become the most used ones, which has improved the state of the art and methods used in these fields. This review paper carefully analyzes and summarizes these applications particularized to submerged structures and shows the most relevant results and findings, which have been obtained thanks to the use of PZTp.

Corporate governance is a key element today in organizations and companies. IT Governance, as a part of corporate governance, plays its role in aligning IT with the business and obtaining the maximum value, minimizing the risks. Several frameworks and guidelines have been published in order to set the basis for this discipline. The recent release of the ISO 38500 (ISO 2008) ads an effort to standardize the different elements of IT governance. Despite these efforts, none of the different frameworks or guidelines is focused on the specific characteristics of small and medium companies (SMOs), although the authors consider that their conclusions are universal. Furthermore, there is no research so far that analyzed the status of IT governance in Spanish organizations. The aim of this work is to do a research to identify the state of the art of IT governance in the Spanish small and medium organizations.

The net annual flux of carbon from south and southeast Asia as a result of changes in the area of forests was calculated for the period 1850 to 1985. The total net flux ranged from 14.4 to 24.0 Pg of carbon, depending on the estimates of biomass used in the calculations. High estimates of biomass, based on direct measurement of a few stands, and low estimates of biomass, based on volumes of merchantable wood surveyed over large areas, differ by a factor of almost 2. These and previous estimates of the release of carbon from terrestrial ecosystems to the atmosphere have been based on changes in the area of forests, or rates of deforestation. Recent studies have shown, however, that the loss of carbon from forests in tropical Asia is greater than would be expected on the basis of deforestation alone. This loss of carbon from within forests (degradation) also releases carbon to the atmosphere when the products removed from the forest burn or decay. Thus, degradation should be included in analyses of the net flux of carbon from terrestrial ecosystems. Degradation may also explain some of the difference between estimates of tropical forest biomass if the higher estimates are based on undisturbed forests and the lower estimates are more representative of the region. The implication of degradation for estimates of the release of carbon from terrestrial ecosystems is explored. When degradation was included in the analyses, the net flux of carbon between 1850 and 1985 was 30.2 Pg of carbon, about 25% above that calculated on the basis of deforestation alone (with high estimates of biomass), and about 110% above that calculated with low estimates of biomass. Thus, lower estimates of biomass for contemporary tropical forests do not necessarily result in lower estimates of flux.

Today’s teachers mainly belong to the so-called “Generation X” while learners are most often described as “Generation Y” or “Millennials”. Most current discussions of learning methods are being held in view of the status quo. But what about the learners of tomorrow? What expectations do the learners of tomorrow have? Which methods and tools will the teachers of tomorrow have in stock to meet these expectations? “The old learning spaces, dominated by the immensely successful organizations of the industrial era like schools and universities, are struggling to maintain authority and control over the definition and certification of knowledge while at the same time remaining true to the stated mandate of helping to equip people and society for a life where learning is much more heterogeneous and heterarchical”[11]. Therefore, wouldn´t it be good to have a toolset ready and be able to choose the appropriate tools and techniques right on time? Reflecting on publications, expert interviews and state-of-the-art best practices, this paper attempts to draw a picture of the future (e-)learning scenario. To give the next generation a name, “Generation I(mmersion)” has been chosen. Despite breaking the X, Y, Z sequence, this name highlights the state of “Immersion”, which educators and learners of tomorrow will/might find themselves in.

Historical and current studies indicate that the Eastern region of the Mediterranean has been distinguished from other regions by a rich inventory of complementary alternative medicine (CAM), in particular herbal medicine. Data collected from several surveys and studies indicate that there is a flourishing and well-developed trade of herbs. These surveys also reveal that 200–250 herbs are used in treating human diseases and are sold or traded in market places in the Mediterranean region or internationally. In addition, some of these herbs are rare or even endangered species. In regard to the status of the know-how of herbalists, unfortunately, herbal medicine in our region is mostly prescribed by ethnopharmacologists symptomatically—based on signs and symptoms alone, rather than as a result of a full understanding of the underlying disease. In some cases, herbs used today may not even correspond to the plants described originally in the old literature, as the former are cultivated from herbs that went through different breeding procedures throughout several centuries. This article presents a systematic review of both the state of the art of traditional Arab herbal medicine and the status of the know-how of Arab herbalists.

AbstractStarting from a sketch of the s-process concept formulated 50 years ago, the nuclear physics data for s-process calculations are briefly reviewed with emphasis on the status of neutron capture cross sections and beta decay rates. Accurate and comprehensive experimental data are mandatory as direct input for s-process calculations as well as for improving the complementary information from nuclear theory. The current challenges of the field are discussed in the light of new or optimized methods and state-of-the-art facilities, indicating the potential for accurate measurements and the possibility to study cross sections of radioactive isotopes. These opportunities will be considerably enriched by the enormous improvements provided by new facilities.

Most existing solutions for the alignment of multi-relational networks, such as multi-lingual knowledge bases, are ``translation''-based which facilitate the network embedding via the trans-family, such as TransE. However, they cannot address triangular or other structural properties effectively. Thus, we propose a non-translational approach, which aims to utilize a probabilistic model to offer more robust solutions to the alignment task, by exploring the structural properties as well as leveraging on anchors to project each network onto the same vector space during the process of learning the representation of individual networks. The extensive experiments on four multi-lingual knowledge graphs demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method over a set of state-of-the-art alignment methods.

This article discusses the state-of-the art of digital archives for archaeological research in Argentina. It also presents and characterises the national and international legal framework and the role played by funding agencies and professional bodies in archaeological practice. In addition, it reports how legal corpora regulate the impact on the management of archaeological digital data. Research infrastructures available at the national level are described, such as the Suquía, an institutional digital archive devoted to archaeology since 2016. Finally, we make a general evaluation of the status quo of research infrastructures mostly concerned with preserving and disseminating data from archaeological research at the national level.
