AbstractGiving and receiving peer feedback is seen as an important vehicle for deep learning. Defining assessment criteria is a first step in giving feedback to peers and can play an important role in feedback providers’ learning. However, there is no consensus about whether it is better to ask students to think about assessment criteria themselves or to provide them with ready-made assessment criteria. The current experimental study aims at answering this question in a secondary school STEM educational context, during a physics lesson in an online inquiry learning environment. As a part of their lesson, participants (n = 93) had to give feedback on two concept maps, and were randomly assigned to one of two conditions—being provided or not being provided with assessment criteria. Students’ post-test scores, the quality of feedback given, and the quality of students’ own concept maps were analyzed to determine if there was an effect of condition on feedback providers’ learning. Results did not reveal an advantage of one condition over the other in terms of learning gains. Possible implications for practice and directions for further research are discussed.

AbstractGiving feedback to peers can be a powerful learning tool because of the feedback provider’s active cognitive involvement with the products to be reviewed. The quality of peers’ products is naturally an important factor that might influence not only the quality of the feedback that is given, but also the learning arising from this process. This experimental study investigated the effect of the level of quality of the reviewed product on the knowledge acquisition of feedback providers, as well as the role of prior knowledge in this. Dutch secondary-school students (n = 77) were assigned to one of three conditions, which varied in the quality of the learning products (concept maps) on which students had to give feedback while working in an online physics inquiry learning environment. Post-test knowledge scores, the quality of students’ own concept maps and the quality of the feedback given were analyzed to determine any effect of condition on the learning of feedback providers. Students providing feedback on the lower-quality concept maps gave better feedback and had higher post-test scores. There was no interaction with level of prior knowledge. Possible implications for practice and further research directions are discussed.

AbstractGiving feedback to peers can be a valuable learning experience for a feedback provider. However, different types of products require different types of feedback, which, in turn, may lead to different learning outcomes. The current study investigates the effect on the learning of feedback providers of reviewing different types of products. Secondary school students (n =127) were randomly assigned to one of the two conditions: giving peer feedback on either concept maps or answers to open-ended test questions. Both types of product, created by the researchers, were comparable with regard to content: they included the same misconceptions and were both of average quality. Giving peer feedback was part of a chemistry lesson delivered in an online inquiry learning environment. Students’ post-test scores, their own learning products, and the quality of the provided feedback were analysed to check for an effect on learning. There was no difference in post-test scores between the conditions, but the quality of the provided feedback predicted post-test scores. This indicates that it is not the type of product reviewed that matters, but the effort that students put into giving feedback. Possible implications for practice and further research directions are discussed.

In an effort to improve student conceptual understanding and help students better connect pre-existing knowledge to new ideas, a concept map assignment was implemented in a first-year college level general chemistry course. This implementation included a quasi-experiment that was carried out in discussion group recitation sections within a third-quarter general chemistry course. Students enrolled in a single section of the course were divided into two groups in which a concept map treatment was compared to a control group that completed short journal entries. Comparison of a concept inventory post-test using an independent samples t-test indicates students in the concept map treatment appear to perform better than the students in the journal control group (t = 2.34, mean difference = 0.844, p < 0.05). However, a multi-variable regression analysis in which the concept inventory post-test scores were compared between the treatment and control groups, while traits related to incoming academic preparation were held constant, suggests there was no significant difference in performance (unstandardized b = 0.222, p = 0.540). The quality of the students’ concept maps was also evaluated and correlated to student performance on the concept inventory, and it appears students who were better at concept mapping made greater gains in conceptual understanding (Pearson's r = 0.295, p < 0.05). When the relationship between the quality of concept mapping and concept inventory post-test was determined while holding constant covariates related to incoming academic preparation, the unstandardized B coefficient was positive, but was not significant at the p = 0.05 level (unstandardized b = 0.215, p = 0.134) This study does not provide unequivocal evidence that a concept map treatment leads to greater gains in conceptual understanding compared to a control population, or that students with better concept mapping skills performed better on the concept inventory instrument. Nevertheless, a template for implementing a concept map assignment in a large enrollment course is provided, and the results presented herein might prompt chemistry instructors to consider including concept map assignments in their instructional toolbox.

Part III is concluded with this chapter that proposes a Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM)-based modeling of the Quality of Interaction (QoI) of the Learning Management System (LMS) users within a blended (b)-learning context, namely FCM-QoI model. Two training/testing scenarios were conducted and explored here, i.e., time-dependent and time-independent, using as pre-validated QoI data the ones presented in chapter 13. Moreover, a FCM-Viewer application that facilitates the visualization of the FCM-QoI model structure is also presented. The experimental results show that the proposed FCM-QoI model can provide concepts interconnection and causal dependencies representation of LMS users' interaction behavior. With this chapter, the circle around the basic fuzzy logic topics discussed in Part II, i.e., FIS, ANFIS, IFIS and FCM, injected into the educational context is fulfilled. Based on the models discussed so far, prospective hybrid modeling approaches are envisioned in the final section of the book (Part IV) that follows.

The aim of this research is to investigate whether there is a meaningful difference in the academic success, between the students who are applied the "formula t-shirt method" (experimental group) and the students who are not (in other classes of the school), in the education for the scientists wanted to be taught in the secondary school 5th, 6th and 7th grade science textbooks. Semi-experimental method was used as research method. In the 6th grade, 27 students participated in this study as experimental group (students wearing t-shirts) and 49 students in the other classes of the school that did not participate in the study. Academic achievement test including pre-test and post-test, informative observations, students’ and teacher’s interviews as well as 20 printed t-shirts were used to collect data. The pilot study of the developed achievement test was applied in another school and also the item analysis of it was performed. According to the research findings, when the experimental group’s success post-test results from the application performed, were examined in line with the interviews, significant differences were observed. It was seen that the subjects aimed to be gained with the formula t-shirt method, were adopted by the students and also increased their success. Looking at the results of the research, thanks to wearing the t-shirts prepared by using the human body on the background, and the reconciliation of the students wearing with the scientists on t-shirts, the desired learning was provided. This also contributed to such learning techniques as peer learning, active learning, social learning in terms of visuality and integrity. It is thought that these materials developed with the formula t-shirt method, will also inspire researchers for future studies in terms of their usability in other fields and subjects

Based on the perspective that motivation is an essential element for learning and academic achievement nor challenge that its components are not directly observable variables, I was empirically examined the instrument through rigorous survey data. The instrument used was Science Motivation Questionnaire II (SMQ-II) that translated into Indonesian Language. The 4 expert judged my Indonesian translation version of SMQ-II and 240 students responded to this version. It assesses five motivation components: intrinsic motivation, self-determination, self-efficacy, career motivation, and grade motivation. The findings of this work show that the questionnaire is a valid and reliable and that the entire questionnaire can be completed in about 15 minutes. Through this work, I suggest my version of SMQ-II in Bahasa Indonesia can be used as an efficient instrument for assessing components of students’ motivation to learn science in Indonesia secondary school.

It seems that educational system in Nigeria has undergone only quantitative improvement in terms of number of schools and students’ enrolment. However, there has been little effort in respect to the capacity to manage them through provisions of adequate financial, human, material and physical resources. Physical and material resources in secondary schools were discovered to be inadequate and poorly equipped. Some of the secondary school buildings were dilapidated, also the allocated financial resource, teaching and non-teaching staff are grossly inadequate compared with the students’ enrolment. The public, the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders in education are expressing serious concern about the consistency of the poor performance of secondary school students especially in mathematics. Increase in population and the government’s free education programs make people want to take advantage of the education provided. Provision of both professionally qualified and non-qualified teachers by government and non-state providers of education also appear not to ameliorate the problem of declining performances in mathematics. The effect of all these on the public secondary school student academic performance in mathematics concern the researchers of this study. It is against this background that the study sought to empirically investigates effect of resource factors and quality of instruction on performance in mathematics of Nigeria secondary school students.
