In the present work, the photo-Fenton degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP, 1 mg/L) has been studied under simulated and natural solar irradiation; moreover, the effect on the process efficiency of urban waste-derived soluble bio-based substances (SBO), structurally comparable to humic acids, has been investigated. Experiments showed a crucial role of PCP photolysis, present in the solar pilot plant and hindered by the Pyrex® filter present in the solar simulator. Indeed, the SBO screen negatively affects PCP degradation when working under natural solar light, where the photolysis of PCP is relevant. In contrast, in the absence of PCP photolysis, a significant improvement of the photo-Fenton process was observed when added to SBO. Furthermore, SBO were able to extend the application of the photo-Fenton process at circumneutral pH values, due to their ability to complex iron, avoiding its precipitation as oxides or hydroxides. This positive effect has been observed at higher concentration of Fe(II) (4 mg/L), whereas at 1 mg/L, the degradation rates of PCP were comparable in the presence and absence of SBO.

This study relates to a method for evaluating the degradation efficiency of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs through a Fenton reaction, using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at 100, 250, and 500 mg/L, ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) at 458 mg/L Fe2+ and pH values of 3, 4.5, and 6. The experiments were conducted according to a 32 experimental design, with 1:1, 3:1, and 5:1 (H2O2/Fe2+) molar ratios. The oxidation and flocculation stages were performed at 130 rpm during 2 hours and at 25–30 rpm during 20 min, respectively. As a result of the Fenton reaction, an average of 91.2% Ascaris lumbricoides egg degradation was achieved at pH 6 using a 500 mg/L dose of H2O2 and a 3:1 (H2O2/Fe2+) molar ratio. Thus, this process is an alternative for eliminating parasites that are resistant to conventional disinfection processes and significantly reduces the human health hazard they represent.

This study estimates the yield of hydroxyl radical using salicylic acid as the trapping reagent and investigates the relationship between hydroxyl radical and pH value. The formation and variation of hydroxyl radical under different pH values were evaluated using reaction products, 2,3-DHBA, 2,5-DHBA, and catechol. The formation rate of hydroxyl radical was dependent on the ratio of ferrous ion to hydrogen peroxide and pH values. The difference between various pH values was explored. The kinetics and mechanisms of hydroxyl radical reactions were established in the Fenton process. Experimental results showed that the best reaction conditions were 8.5 mM H2O2, 1.25 mM Fe2 + , Fe2 + /H2O2=0.147 at pH 3 and the formation rate constant of hydroxyl radical was 1.12 × 1011 M−1 s−1.

This work aimed to integrate two wastewater treatment technologies, Fenton process as the primary treatment and adsorption aiming achieve maximum removal efficiency and adequation to the environmental and water legislations. Wastewater from a cosmetics industry plant in the metropolitan area of Goiânia (Brazil) was the object of this research. It was analysed environmental parameters as absorbance, total iron, chemical oxygen demand, pH, total phenols, conductivity, H2O2, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and total solids. They were analyzed in between processes at all stages.  The effects of Fe2+ (18.42-257.89 mg L-1) and H2O2 (500-2300 mg L-1) concentrations and pH values (3.00-5.50) were studied for the Fenton process treatment. In adsorption, the activated carbon was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, adsorption and desorption of N2 and thermogravimetry (TG/DTA). The effect of the contact time (4min-24h) and of the temperature variation in the system 20-60 °C were studied. By integrating the two technologies, a satisfactory removal rate was achieved for the analyzed parameters in the total time of treatment of 82 minutes

SummaryPreparations were made of rabbit liver globulin by the method of Jaques for heparinase and their effect on heparin studied. The results confirmed the observations of a progressive loss of anticoagulant activity with globulin in 0.9% saline, of a loss of metachromatic activity after phenol extraction and the reversal of the latter by alkali. The latter observations were due to the solubility in phenol of heparin on combination with protein. With suitable preparations, a decrease in anticoagulant activity without decrease in metachromatic activity was observed, i.e. conversion of heparin to uroheparin. Loss of heparin due to combination with protein and resulting precipitation, solubility in phenol, etc. followed a protein pH-dissociation curve. Loss of heparin anticoagulant activity due to heparinase was maximal at pH 5.4. No loss of heparin occurred at pH values more acid than 5 or more alkaline than 7.

A study was conducted to evaluate the water quality parameters of pond water at Mymensingh Urban region. The water samples were collected from 30 ponds located at Mymensingh Urban Region during August to October 2010. The chemical analyses of water samples included pH, EC, Na, K, Ca, S, Mn and As were done by standard methods. The chemical properties in pond water were found pH 6.68 to 7.14, EC 227 to 700 ?Scm-1, Na 15.57 to 36.00 ppm, K 3.83 to 16.16 ppm, Ca 2.01 to 7.29 ppm, S 1.61 to 4.67 ppm, Mn 0.33 to 0.684 ppm and As 0.0011 to 0.0059 ppm. The pH values of water samples revealed that water samples were acidic to slightly alkaline in nature. The EC value revealed that water samples were medium salinity except one sample and also good for irrigation. According to drinking water standard Mn toxicity was detected in pond water. Considering Na, Ca and S ions pond water was safe for irrigation and aquaculture. In case of K ion, all the samples were suitable for irrigation but unsuitable for aquaculture.J. Environ. Bulang districts Batam Islands of  Riau province (Riau Islands), its consists of many islands with as well as having the potential diversity of coastal marine life in particular kinds of macro algae or seaweed. Conducted research aimed to determine the structure of macro- algal communities in the intertidal zone islands. The results of the identification of algal species found 16 species are: the Order of Chlorophyceae as 6 spesies; Order Phaeophyceae as 2 spesies; and Order Rhodophyceae as 8 spesies. The community structure at the five stations showed the highest values were found in the island of dominance Cicir (D ' = 0.79) , uniformity index values on Tengah Island (E ' = 0.99) , while the island Balak had the highest diversity index (H ' = 0.88) , with the abundance patterns of population structure on the island is pretty good Central . Results of correlation analysis of regression between IVI types of algae with the conditions of environmental quality suggests that there is a significance (Fhit ˃ F table and the value of r = > 90 %) between IVI algae Halimeda sp and Cryptarachne polyglandulosa at each station with a temperature parameter surface (⁰C) , depth temperature (⁰C) and pH values. Keywords : Algae, Community Structure, Important Value Index.
