Abstract Grades provide students with information about their level of performance. However, grades may also make students more aware of how well they have estimated their performance, their so-called calibration accuracy. This longitudinal quasi-experimental study, set in secondary education, examined how to increase students’ awareness of the accuracy of their grade estimates in order to improve their calibration accuracy. During an entire school year, students from year 1, 2, and 3 provided grade estimates after each of their French exams. Subsequently, when students received their grades, the level of reflection support on their earlier estimates was manipulated. The first group of students just received their grade, the second group had to calculate the difference between their estimate and the actual grade, and the third group also had to reflect on reasons for a possible mismatch. We expected that more reflection support would lead to more improvement in calibration accuracy. Results showed that providing grade estimates already improved calibration accuracy over the school year, regardless of level of reflection support. This finding shows that asking for grade estimates is an easy-to-implement way to improve calibration accuracy of students in secondary education.

ABSTRACT:In this paper we present the results of a research carried out with students of 1st grade of Compulsory Secondary Education in which we study if the use of tasks that involve the invention and reconstruction of mathematical problems develops their creativity. The study sample was made up of 104 students of a public secondary school. The design of the research was quasi-experimental comparative with two experimental groups and two control groups. The selection of students and groups was aleatory. It is accentuated the characteristic prestest-postest in the design because pupils belonged to two states of control. The instrument used to measure creativity was the test CREA. The results obtained show that if invention and reconstruction of mathematical problems is used with students of 1st grade of Compulsory Secondary Education, then their creativity develops.RESUMEN:En este artículo presentamos los resultados de una investigación llevada a cabo con alumnos de 1º de Educa-ción Secundaria Obligatoria en la que estudiamos si el uso en el aula de tareas que involucren la invención y recons-trucción de problemas matemáticos desarrolla su creatividad. La muestra estuvo formada por 104 alumnos de un institu-to de titularidad pública. El diseño de la investigación fue cuasi-experimental comparativo con dos grupos experimentales y dos grupos control. La selección de los alumnos y de los grupos fue aleatoria. Al pertenecer los sujetos a dos estados de control, se subraya en el diseño la característica pretest-postest. El instrumento utilizado para medir la creatividad fue el test CREA. Robotics programming is a type of coding that combines mechanics and programming. Robotics technology facilitates coding instruction. Coding improves students' problem-solving skills. However, studies from the literature show that some teaching methods do not have a positive effect on coding skills. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of robotics programming training on secondary school students’ problem-solving skills. For this purpose, the study was conducted as a pretest - posttest quasi-experimental model without control group. 30 6th grade students (12 boys and 18 girls) from three secondary schools participated in this study. Activities were conducted with the VEX IQ Robot Kit during nine weeks. Before and after the process, problem-solving inventory and problem-solving skills perception scale were applied as pre- and post-test. As the scores obtained from the scales did not show a normal distribution, the difference between the pretest and posttest scale scores was examined by Wilcoxon signed rank test. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that robotics programming helped students to develop problem-solving skills.

Kodály-inspired pedagogy enables students to participate effectively in a music course by engaging in active musical interactions with folk songs and melodies. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of Kodály-inspired pedagogy on recorder performance and attitudes toward music of secondary school students. A quasi-experimental design was used in the study. The experimental group was taught using Kodály-inspired pedagogy and the control group using the general music teaching methods for 9 weeks. A two-way mixed-design analysis of variance (ANOVA) and content analysis were used to analyze the data. A Recorder Performance Grading Key, music course attitude scale, and open-ended questions were used to collect the data. Consequently, the findings indicated that Kodály-inspired pedagogy had a significant effect on the students’ recorder performance but the researchers could not find a significant effect on students’ attitudes toward the music course. Moreover, students in the experimental group reported improvement in their recorder performance and attitudes toward music education. The researchers recommended including information about the implementation of Kodály-inspired pedagogy in music teacher textbooks, providing in-service training for teachers to enable them to use Kodály-inspired pedagogy.

Robotics technology has become increasingly common both for businesses and for private citizens. Primary and secondary schools, as a mirror of societal evolution, have increasingly integrated science, technology, engineering and math concepts into their curricula. Our research questions are: “In teaching robotics to primary and secondary school students, which pedagogical-methodological interventions result in better understanding and knowledge in the use of sensors in educational robotics?”, and “In teaching robotics to primary and secondary school students, which analytical methods related to Learning Analytics processes are proposed to analyze and reflect on students’ behavior in their learning of concepts and skills of sensors in educational robotics?”. To answer these questions, we have carried out a systematic review of the literature in the Web of Science and Scopus databases regarding robotics sensors in primary and secondary education, and Learning Analytics processes. We applied PRISMA methodology and reviewed a total of 24 articles. The results show a consensus about the use of the Learning by Doing and Project-Based Learning methodologies, including their different variations, as the most common methodology for achieving optimal engagement, motivation and performance in students’ learning. Finally, future lines of research are identified from this study.

The present study is based on Academic anxiety. The aim of the study is to find out the difference between religion and gender, regarding academic anxiety for the purpose of the study, 120 School children were chosen from different school at Kapadwanj town, Gujarat, for data collection in all 120 student, 60 being boys (30 Hindu +30 Muslim ) and 60 girls (30 Hindu + 30 Muslim ). Generally anxiety can be either a trait anxiety or a state anxiety. A trait anxiety is a stable characteristic or trait of the person. A state anxiety is one which is aroused by some temporary condition of the environment such as examination, accident, punishment, etc. Academic anxiety is a kind of state anxiety which relates to the impending danger from the environments of the academic institution including teacher, certain subjects like Mathematics, English, etc. I have used ‘Academic Anxiety Scale for children’ (AASC Scale) by Dr. A. k. Singh & Dr. (km) A.  Sen Gupta. The obtained data analyzed through Mann-Whitney ‘ U ‘ test. The result shows that there was no significant difference between the Academic anxiety of Muslim boys & girls and Hindu girls & Muslim girls. There is more Academic anxiety in Hindu girls then Hindu boys and more Academic anxiety in Muslim boys then Hindu boys.

Students’ conceptions of the equals sign are related to algebraic success. Research has identified two common conceptions held by children: operational and relational. The latter has been widely operationalised in terms of the sameness of the values on each side of the equals sign, but it has been recently argued that the substitution component of relational equivalence should also be operationalised (Jones, Inglis, Gilmore, & Dowens, 2012, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jecp.2012.05.003). In this study, we investigated whether students’ endorsement of the substitution definition of the equals sign is a unique predictor of their algebra performance independent of the other two definitions (operational and sameness). Secondary school students were asked to rate the ‘cleverness’ of operational, sameness, and substitution definitions of the equals sign and completed an algebra test. Our findings demonstrate that endorsement of substitution plays a unique role in explaining secondary school students’ algebra performance above and beyond school year and the other definitions. These findings contribute new insights into how students’ algebra learning relates to their conceptions of the equals sign.

This article presents an exploratory study to find out whether high-ability secondary school students in Singapore were able to deal with open mathematical investigative tasks. A class of Secondary One (or Grade 7) students, who had no prior experience with this kind of investigation, were given a paper-and-pencil test consisting of four open tasks. The results show that these students did not even know how to begin, despite sample questions being given in the first two tasks to guide and help them pose their own problems. The main difficulty was the inability to understand the task requirement: what does it mean to investigate? Another issue was the difference between searching for any patterns without a specific problem to solve, and searching for patterns to solve a given problem. The implications of these findings on teaching and on research methodologies that rely on paper-and-pencil test instruments will also be discussed.
