The Impact of Residents' Leisure Time Allocation Mode on Individual Subjective Well-being: The Case of China

AbstractAs the main tension in Chinese society has become that between people's growing need for a better life and unbalanced and inadequate development, leisure activities have become a main factor affecting the subjective well-being of Chinese residents. This study uses micro data from the 2019–2020 Chinese Residents’ Economic Life Survey as the sample, applies the latent class analysis (LCA) method to conduct a joint analysis of all leisure activities of individuals, and then divides individual leisure time modes into four types: general leisure, stationary leisure, family-friendly leisure and sports/health care-related leisure. To overcome endogeneity problems from missing variables, sample selection bias, and two-way causality, this paper uses the Heckman two-step and propensity score matching methods to empirically analyse the impacts of residents' leisure time allocation patterns on individual subjective well-being. The study finds that sports/health care-type leisure is most helpful in improving individual subjective well-being, followed by general leisure, family-friendly leisure and stationary leisure, which have relatively weaker impacts on subjective well-being. The estimation results remain robust and reliable after we introduce the idea of ​​misclassification probability to test the robustness of the findings. On this basis, a group heterogeneity analysis by region, income level, education level, marital status and age is carried out. The research conclusions of this article can help guide residents in rationally allocating their leisure time and provide a policy reference for the construction of leisure facilities in China’s cities.

This study explored narratives derived from in-depth interviews to demonstrate how an increase in leisure time could positively affect both our subjective well-being, through a better balance of work and “self”, and the environment, through a change in consumption practices. Firstly, the analysis of the interviews provided insight into the social function of work. Work creates feelings of connection and belonging; however, it can also create the opposite, negatively affecting our experience of leisure time, our productivity, and our well-being. Participants described how paid work provided structure and routine, which resulted in an increased feeling of subjective well-being. However, a lack of structure and routine during the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected feelings of “usefulness” and “productivity”. Secondly, an increase in leisure time created more opportunities for autonomy, leading to more unforced leisure activities and a better balance between work and self. Moreover, an increase in autonomy could be achieved through both increased work flexibility and a shorter working week. Lastly, this study aimed to demonstrate that more leisure time during lockdown periods can change how we spend our free time, therefore resulting in more pro-environmental consumer behaviour. This study intended to contribute to a gap in the literature: effects of leisure time on the balance between work and the “self”. The research setting offered limited opportunities for researching intentional, sustainable consumer behaviour, which provides an opportunity for further research.

This article focuses on the division of the daily activities of self-employed persons on entrepreneurial activities, unpaid work, leisure time and other activities, and their interconnection to the feelings of happiness (as part of subjective well-being). Modified Time Use Survey (TUS) methodology was used to gather data on division of time and to identify SWB. The 13 groups of activities and 161 self-employed persons were included in the analysis. The results suggest that both self-employed men and women dedicate more than 8 hours per day for paid work. Daily activities during which the highest part of self-employed men and women feel the happiest belong to leisure activities. Unpaid work activities bring the highest feeling of happiness to 12.5 % of self-employed women. Feelings of happiness of self-employed women are more fluctuating during the paid work than feelings of happiness of self-employed men. In the evening, the feelings of happiness of the self-employed women decrease significantly, which could be caused by double burden of self-employed women.

This day-level study examines links between the amount of leisure time devoted to social, physical, and low-effort activities after the workday and affective well-being at bedtime. A sample of 95 office-based workers completed surveys over four consecutive days at bedtime (380 data points). Results revealed a within-person effect of leisure activity on daily affective well-being. Participants consistently reported enhanced mood before sleep on days when they spent more hours engaging in physical and social activities compared to their personal average number of hours spent on these activities across the four days of the study. However, on days when more hours were spent on low-effort activity, participants consistently reported decreased positive emotions. This suggests that time allocation to certain leisure activities may better support well-being on a daily basis. Discussion focuses on the implications of these findings for helping individuals enhance their evening leisure experiences by making astute leisure choices.

Abstract Commuting between home and work is routinely performed by workers and any wellbeing impacts of commuting will consequently affect a large proportion of the population. This paper presents findings from analyses of the impact of commuting (time and mode) on multiple aspects of Subjective Well-Being (SWB), including: satisfaction with life overall and the SWB sub-domains of job satisfaction, satisfaction with leisure time availability and self-reported health. Measures of strain and mental health (GHQ-12) are also examined. Six waves of individual-level panel data from Understanding Society (2009/10 to 2014/15) are analysed, providing a sample of over 26,000 workers living in England. Associations between commuting and SWB are identified, paying particular attention to those arising from individual changes in commuting circumstances over the six waves. It is found that longer commute times are associated with lower job and leisure time satisfaction, increased strain and poorer mental health. The strongest association is found for leisure time satisfaction. Despite these negative associations with the SWB sub-domains, longer commute times were not associated with lower overall life satisfaction (except where individuals persisted with them over all six waves). Workers in England appear to be successful in balancing the negative aspects of commuting against the wider benefits, e.g. access to employment, earnings and housing. Differences amongst selected population sub-groups are also examined. The job satisfaction of younger adults and lower income groups are not found to be negatively associated with longer commute times; longer commute times are more strongly negatively associated with the job satisfaction of women compared to men. With respect to mode of transport, walking to work is associated with increased leisure time satisfaction and reduced strain. The absence of the commute, via working from home, is associated with increased job satisfaction and leisure time satisfaction. Overall, the study indicates that shorter commute times and walkable commutes can contribute to improved SWB—particularly through the release of leisure time. But life satisfaction overall will only be maintained if the benefits of undertaking the commute (earnings and satisfactory housing/employment) are not compromised.

ABSTRACT Object of the analysis. The influence of employees’ burnout on organized leisure time. Investigation problem. Previous studies have shown that burnout is a factor that affects civil servants. As the employees’ well-being can influence the organization’s activities, the impact of the burnout on employees is a topical issue and is increasingly being analysed among scientists, but the effect of the burnout in organizing leisure activities is not widely researched, therefore the problem of this work is relevant and explorable. The impact of the burnout on leisure time employment could be more effective in organizing activities. Research methods – scientific literature data analysis, statistical analysis of data, structured interview. Aim of the analysis: to evaluate the impact of the burnout of employees on organized leisure time. Goals of the analysis. 1. Based on the analysis of scientific literature, to reveal theoretical concepts of leisure-time organization and leisure services. 2. To introduce the burnout contact with leisure time organization. 3. To analyse the impact of staff burnout ton organized leisure time. The results of the research revealed that the determination of the manifestation of burnout is important, the status of the leisure organizer and the quality of the organized activity depend on it. Therefore, the burnout manifestations that have been observed in a timely manner must be stopped so that the leisure time is organized properly. It has been found that the causes of the burnout are related to the leisure organizer and leisure activities. It is important for leisure organizers to pay attention to the success of the organized activities. Many respondents identified burnout factors that prove burnout. Outcomes and conclusions. This confirms that the burnout negatively affects the quality of the leisure time. In order to improve leisure activities, it is suggested to take into account the recommendations: 1. To identify the illness and its manifestations, to identify the causes of the manifestation, to try to overcome them with their own help or with the help of specialists. 2. To create conditions for training and counselling for psychologists that would promote the resolution of stress situations, conflict management, overcoming stress and ensuring good working relationships in a leisure setting. 3. Organize seminars for leisure organizers in which there would be a possibility to improve. 4. Encourage leisure organizers to engage in activities that meet their personal needs and interests.

Abstract. Research shows that engagement in leisure activities promotes well-being among older adults. The objective of the current study was to examine the relationship between subjective well-being (flourishing) and leisure activities (total number of different activities in the previous year) in a sample of older adults in Croatia, thereby considering the variables of sex, marital status, financial status, and self-perceived health. The differences in the examined variables between the groups of older adults who reported to be engaged in new activities with those who did not were also examined. The sample of N = 169 older adults aged 60 years and above was drawn from a convenience sample of adult internet users in Croatia. Participants reported their self-perceived health and the number of leisure activities they engaged in over the previous year as well as completing the Flourishing Scale. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that older adults who were engaged in more various leisure activities, who perceived better financial status, and who were married reported higher levels of flourishing. A comparison of the two groups of older adults with and without engagement in leisure activities showed that those engaged in at least one leisure activity were more likely to be women, reported higher levels of flourishing, and perceived their own financial status as better. This study indicated that engaging in leisure activities in later life might provide beneficial effects for the well-being of older adults.

AbstractIntroduction. The COVID-19 is the name of an infectious disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2). It was first diagnosed in December 2019 in patients in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. The symptoms are dominated by features of respiratory tract infections, in some patients with a very severe course leading to respiratory failure and, in extreme cases to death. Due to the spread of the infection worldwide, the WHO declared a pandemic in March 2020.Aim. An investigation of the impact of social isolation introduced due to the coronavirus pandemic on selected aspects of life. The researchers focused on observing changes in habits related to physical activity and their connections with people’s subjective well-being and emotional state.Material and methods. The study was carried out within the international project of the group „IRG on COVID and exercise”. The research tool was a standardized questionnaire.Results. Based on the data collected and the analysis of the percentage results, it can be observed that the overwhelming majority of people taking up physical activity reported a better mood during the pandemic. However, statistical tests do not confirm these relationships due to the small sample size.Conclusions. Isolation favours physical activity. Future, in-depth studies, by enlarging the population group, are necessary to confirm the above observations.

Abstract Background Complications after neurosurgical operations can have severe impact on patient well-being, which is poorly reflected by current grading systems. The objective of this work was to develop and conduct a feasibility study of a new smartphone application that allows for the longitudinal assessment of postoperative well-being and complications. Methods We developed a smartphone application “Post OP Tracker” according to requirements from clinical experience and tested it on simulated patients. Participants received regular notifications through the app, inquiring them about their well-being and complications that had to be answered according to their assigned scenarios. After a 12-week period, subjects answered a questionnaire about the app’s functionality, user-friendliness, and acceptability. Results A total of 13 participants (mean age 34.8, range 24–68 years, 4 (30.8%) female) volunteered in this feasibility study. Most of them had a professional background in either health care or software development. All participants downloaded, installed, and applied the app for an average of 12.9 weeks. On a scale of 1 (worst) to 4 (best), the app was rated on average 3.6 in overall satisfaction and 3.8 in acceptance. The design achieved a somewhat favorable score of 3.1. One participant (7.7%) reported major technical issues. The gathered patient data can be used to graphically display the simulated outcome and assess the impact of postoperative complications. Conclusions This study suggests the feasibility to longitudinally gather postoperative data on subjective well-being through a smartphone application. Among potential patients, our application indicated to be functional, user-friendly, and well accepted. Using this app-based approach, further studies will enable us to classify postoperative complications according to their impact on the patient’s well-being.
