P-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 compounds doped with 3wt% Te were fabricated by spark plasma sintering and their mechanical and thermoelectric properties were investigated. The sintered compounds with the bending strength of more than 50MPa and the figure-of-merit 2.9×10-3/K were obtained by controlling the mixing ratio of large powders (PL) and small powders (PS). Compared with the conventionally prepared single crystal thermoelectric materials, the bending strength was increased up to more than three times and the figure-of-merit Z was similar those of single crystals. It is expected that the mechanical properties could be improved by using hybrid powders without degradation of thermoelectric properties.

AbstractA combination of environmental, economic, and technological drivers has led to a reassessment of the potential for using thermoelectric devices in several automotive applications. In order for this technology to achieve its ultimate potential, new materials with enhanced thermoelectric properties are required. Experimental results on the fundamental physical properties of some new thermoelectric materials, including filled skutterudites and 1–1–1 intermetallic semiconductors, are presented.

[Formula: see text] is a [Formula: see text] compound (where Pn = Bi and Sb, Ch = Te, Se, and S), which has attracted increasing attention as a candidate for use in thermoelectric applications. Previous studies demonstrated the advantage of [Formula: see text] thermoelectric materials, despite an inferior thermoelectric performance. Herein, a series of [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text], 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.25) thermoelectric materials were prepared by powder compaction sintering. The effects of phase structures and microstructure of the [Formula: see text] bulk material were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The thermoelectric properties, including Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity, were measured systematically. The results show that carrier concentration increased with decreasing Se content, which in turn affected the electrical transport properties. Low Se contents gave larger power factor (PF) values than the pristine [Formula: see text] sample, the maximum PF value being [Formula: see text] at 320 K for [Formula: see text]. The variation in PF was attributed to the variations in electrical conductivity [Formula: see text] and Seebeck coefficient [Formula: see text] upon optimizing Se content. The [Formula: see text] samples showed an enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) with increasing measurement temperature, due to the increased [Formula: see text] value, [Formula: see text], and decreased [Formula: see text]. The [Formula: see text] sample exhibited the highest ZT (0.28) at 575 K, while [Formula: see text] exhibited the lowest ZT (0.14) at 325 K. This indicated that tuning Se content was an effective way to enhance carrier concentration.

Half-Heusler alloys are one of the potential thermoelectric materials for medium to high temperature range application. As a part of fundamental study to establish processing route and to observe thermoelectric properties in undoped state, ZrCoSb was selected, processed and evaluated. In an attempt to produce a half-Heusler thermoelectric materials having ultra fine grain structures, ZrCoSb was synthesized by mechanical alloying of stoichiometric elemental powder compositions, and consolidated by vacuum hot pressing. Phase transformations during mechanical alloying and hot consolidation were investigated using XRD, SEM and EDS. Single-phase, half-Heusler was successfully produced by vacuum hot pressing using as-milled powders without subsequent annealing. Thermoelectric properties as functions of temperature were evaluated in terms of Seebeek coefficient, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and the figure of merit for the hot pressed specimens. Mechanically alloyed half-Heusler phase, ZrCoSb, appeared to have a great potential as a thermoelectric materials in this study.
