AbstractIn this study, the coupled torsional–transverse vibration of a propeller shaft system owing to the misalignment caused by the shaft rotation was investigated. The proposed numerical model is based on the modified version of the Jeffcott rotor model. The equation of motion describing the harmonic vibrations of the system was obtained using the Euler–Lagrange equations for the associated energy functional. Experiments considering different rotation speeds and axial loads acting on the propulsion shaft system were performed to verify the numerical model. The effects of system parameters such as shaft length and diameter, stiffness and damping coefficients, and cross-section eccentricity were also studied. The cross-section eccentricity increased the displacement response, yet coupled vibrations were not initially observed. With the increase in the eccentricity, the interaction between two vibration modes became apparent, and the agreement between numerical predictions and experimental measurements improved. Given the results, the modified version of the Jeffcott rotor model can represent the coupled torsional–transverse vibration of propulsion shaft systems.

The Rotating shafts are mechanical elements used to transmit power or motion. A shaft with a step or steps is widely used instead of a shaft with a fixed (non-variable) diameter when operating at high speeds. The aim of this research is to study the effect of the step amount and its location in the shaft on the natural frequencies of the Jeffcott rotor model. Analytical methods are used to find an approximate formulation to obtain the natural frequencies of the Jeffcott rotor model neglecting the shaft mass. Lagrange equations are used to develop dynamic equations assuming elastic shaft with steps carrying a disk. The finite element method by using ANSYS is used to validate and compare the results obtained in the analytical method. The results obtained analytically and numerically were compatible and in good agreement. In addition, some parameters such as the step amount and the stepped shaft length are changed to check its effects on the natural frequencies. the results showed that the natural frequencies increase with an increase in the amount and length of the stepped part, while they decrease the closer the disc position to the center.

This article discusses the analysis of the general equations of the transverse vibration of a piecewise homogeneous viscoelastic plate obtained in the “Oscillation of inlayer plates of constant thickness” [1]. In the present work on the basis of a mathematical method, the approached theory of fluctuation of the two-layer plates, based on plate consideration as three dimensional body, on exact statement of a three dimensional mathematical regional problem of fluctuation is stood at the external efforts causing cross-section fluctuations. The general equations of fluctuations of piecewise homogeneous viscoelastic plates of the constant thickness, described in work [1], are difficult on structure and contain derivatives of any order on coordinates x, y and time t and consequently are not suitable for the decision of applied problems and carrying out of engineering calculations. For the decision of applied problems instead of the general equations it is expedient to use confidants who include this or that final order on derivatives. The classical equations of cross-section fluctuation of a plate contain derivatives not above 4th order, and for piecewise homogeneous or two-layer plates the elementary approached equation of fluctuation is the equation of the sixth order. On the basis of the analytical decision of a problem the general and approached decisions of a problem are under construction, are deduced the equation of fluctuation of piecewise homogeneous two-layer plates taking into account rigid contact on border between layers, and also taking into account mechanical and rheological properties of a material of a plate. The received theoretical results for the decision of dynamic problems of cross-section fluctuation of piecewise homogeneous two-layer plates of a constant thickness taking into account viscous properties of their material allow to count more precisely the is intense-deformed status of plates at non-stationary external loadings.

It is well known that the water hammer phenomenon can lead to pipeline system failures. For this reason, there is an increased need for simulation of hydraulic transients. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes are commonly used in various pressurised pipeline systems. Most studies have only focused on water hammer events in a single pipe. However, typical fluid distribution networks are composed of serially connected pipes with various inner diameters. The present paper aims to investigate the influence of sudden cross-section changes in an HDPE pipeline system on pressure oscillations during the water hammer phenomenon. Numerical and experimental studies have been conducted. In order to include the viscoelastic behaviour of the HDPE pipe wall, the generalised Kelvin–Voigt model was introduced into the continuity equation. Transient equations were numerically solved using the explicit MacCormack method. A numerical model that involves assigning two values of flow velocity to the connection node was used. The aim of the conducted experiments was to record pressure changes downstream of the pipeline system during valve-induced water hammer. In order to validate the numerical model, the simulation results were compared with experimental data. A satisfactory compliance between the results of the numerical calculations and laboratory data was obtained.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is an additive technology that allows for the production of precisely designed complex structures for energy absorbing applications from a wide range of metallic materials. Geometrical imperfections of the SLM fabricated lattice structures, which form one of the many thin struts, can lead to a great difference in prediction of their behavior. This article deals with the prediction of lattice structure mechanical properties under dynamic loading using finite element method (FEA) with inclusion of geometrical imperfections of the SLM process. Such properties are necessary to know especially for the application of SLM fabricated lattice structures in automotive or aerospace industries. Four types of specimens from AlSi10Mg alloy powder material were manufactured using SLM for quasi-static mechanical testing and determination of lattice structure mechanical properties for the FEA material model, for optical measurement of geometrical accuracy, and for low-velocity impact testing using the impact tester with a flat indenter. Geometries of struts with elliptical and circular cross-sections were identified and tested using FEA. The results showed that, in the case of elliptical cross-section, a significantly better match was found (2% error in the Fmax) with the low-velocity impact experiments during the whole deformation process compared to the circular cross-section. The FEA numerical model will be used for future testing of geometry changes and its effect on mechanical properties.

In this paper, we provide not only key knowledge for friction model selection among candidate models but also experimental friction features compared with numerical predictions reproduced by the candidate models. A motor-driven one-dimensional sliding block has been designed and fabricated in our lab to carry out a wide range of control tasks for the friction feature demonstrations and the parameter identifications of the candidate models. Besides the well-known static features such as break-away force and viscous friction, our setup experimentally demonstrates subtle dynamic features that characterize the physical behavior. The candidate models coupled with correct parameters experimentally obtained from our setup are taken to simulate the features of interest. The first part of this work briefly introduces the candidate friction models, the friction features of interest, and our experimental approach. The second part of this work is dedicated to the comparisons between the experimental features and the numerical model predictions. The discrepancies between the experimental features and the numerical model predictions help researchers to judge the accuracy of the models. The relation between the candidate model structures and their numerical friction feature predictions is investigated and discussed. A table that summarizes how to select the most optimal friction model among a variety of engineering applications is presented at the end of this paper. Such comprehensive comparisons have not been reported in previous literature.

Subharmonic response in rotordynamics may be encountered when a rotor is operated with its rotational centerline eccentric to that of a close clearance static part, so that local contact can take place during each orbit when the rotor is excited by residual unbalance. The rotor will tend to bounce at or near its fundamental frequency when the rotor is operated at or near a speed which is a whole number [n] times that frequency. Using a simple numerical model of a Jeffcott rotor mounted on a nonlinear spring, it is found that the vibratory response in the transition zone midway between adjacent zones of subharmonic response has all the characteristics of chaotic behavior. The transition from subharmonic to chaotic response has a complex substructure which involves a sequence of bifurcations of the orbit with variations in speed. This class of rotordynamic behavior was confirmed and illustrated by experimental observations of the vibratory response of a high-speed turbomachine, operating at a speed between 8 and 9 times its fundamental rotor frequency when in local contact across a clearance in the support system. A narrow region between zones of 8th order and 9th order subharmonic response was identified where the response had all the characteristics of the chaotic motion identified in the numerical model.

Free-vibration characteristics of a thin-walled, open cross-section beam, with unconstrained damping layers at the flanges, are investigated. Both uncoupled transverse vibration and the coupled bending-torsion oscillations, of a beam of a top-hat section, are considered. Numerical results are presented for natural frequencies and modal loss factors of simply supported and clamped-clamped beams.

The current paper is describing the implementation of a multiscale numerical model for prediction of stiffness and strength in braided composites. The model is validated by experimental testing of single-layer braided tubes under torsional loading utilising digital image correlation (DIC). For the numerical model the entire braided structure is modelled at yarn detail level, taking into account the yarn behaviour as well as individual yarn-to-yarn interactions by using cohesive contact definitions. By means of Hashin’s failure criteria and cohesive contact damage, failure of the yarns and failure of the yarn-to-yarn interface is being accounted for. Thereby the material failure behaviour can be predicted. For validation of the model, torsion tests of biaxially braided single-layer composite tubes were performed. The strain distribution at the specimen surface was studied using the DIC system ARAMIS in 3D mode.
