Sago composite membrane possesses a microporous polysulfone substrate were prepared and tested for dehydration of ethyl acetate/water mixture. Sago composite membrane has been cross-linked successfully by glutaraldehyde. The membranes were characterized by Degree of swelling (DS) and scanning electron micrographs (SEM). Pervaporation of ethyl acetate –water mixture was conducted over a range of water concentration (1-4wt %) in feed solution at varied temperature from 30°C to 60°C. Relatively new Sago/PVA blended membranes were prepared by solution casting technique. Homogenous sago/PVA membranes were prepared with different ratio of sago content in the membrane. The blended membranes were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle measurements, and degree of swelling (DS). The blended membranes were tested for pervaporation of ethyl acetate-water mixture at a range of 1-4wt% of water in the solution. The effects of feed temperature and concentration were investigated. The permeation flux increased around 30% with sago content in the blend membranes from 3wt% to 7wt% at 60oC. However, the separation factor decreased from 433 to 387 for same membrane.

Study to assess the larvicidal property of Lantana camara leaves against Aedes triseriatus larvae found that the ethyl acetate extract had profound larvicidal action with the crude extract having a LC50 value of 409.831ppm. GC-MS analysis of the ethyl acetate extract confirmed the presence of twenty-one compounds out of which beta-caryophyllene covered the highest percentage of the chromatogram area. Further tests with beta-caryophyllene against the mosquito larvae proved it to be the active ingredient of L. Camara with a LC50 value of 104.243ppm.

ABSTRACT A convenient and mild procedure is described in this paper whereby free and conjugated oestrogens may be extracted from urine. The extracts containing approximately 90 per cent of the oestrogens are devoid of most of the extraneous material and may be reduced in volume to less than 1/15 of that of the urine. The procedure consists of the following steps: (1) a 10 per cent (v/v) solution of a high molecular weight secondary amine (Amberlite LA-2, Rohm and Haas) in ethyl acetate is washed with formic acid and water, (2) the oestrogens in urine (acidified to pH 2 or 3 with H2SO4) are extracted with the LA-2 solution, (3) the oestrogen fraction is back-extracted from the organic solution with dilute aqueous ammonia.

The fruit of Rosa multiflora has been used as traditional herbal medicine in Asian countries. The present investigation was undertaken to study the antimicrobial activity and total polyphenol content of hexane, ether, ethyl acetate, water fraction of methanol extract of fruit and flower from Rosa multiflora and Rosa wichuraiana. Antimicrobial activity of the mentioned fractions against 3 gram-positive and 4 gram-negative bacteria using disk diffussion method. The measurement of minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) showed that the ethyl acetate fraction of the two Rosa species is the most effective against the tested bacteria. The total polyphenol content of ethyl acetate fraction of the two Rosa species is higher than the other fractions. The results indicate the antimicrobial activity was related with the total polyphenol content and the fruit and flower of the two Rosa species can be considered as a natural source of antimicrobial agents.
