The evolution of semiconductor from the conventional type to organic semiconductor has not convincingly shown that it is eco-friendly both in the short and long term. This research presents the green solution bio-semiconductor that was synthesized from zinc coated carica papaya. It was observed that carica papaya extracts do not respond significantly to the extracting solution (methanol, ethanol and butanol). The band gap of sample 1 (extract in methanol solution), sample 2 (extract in ethanol solution) and sample 3 (extract in butanol solution) was calculated as 1.98 eV, 2.01eV and 1.93 eV respectively. Further research is therefore recommended for the perfection of the bio-semiconductor.

Metakaolin (MK) is nowadays a well-known pozzolanic material used in cement-based materials. Its benefits are related to its great pozzolanic reactivity when compared with some others pozzolanic materials, like fly ash or ground-granulated blast furnace slag. When MK reacts with calcium hydroxide, cementitious products are formed. It is known that the main phases produced during its pozzolanic reaction at ambient temperature are calcium silicate hydrates (CSH), stratlingite (C2ASH8) and calcium aluminate hydrate (C4AH13). However, in literature there are several discrepancies regarding these phases stability, namely the transformation of stratlingite and C4AH13 into hydrogarnet (C3AH6) at long term. The consequences of that instability are a reduction in the porosity and a loss of microstructural strength that can induce a complete material degradation. The MK is a material with great potential in Portugal, since there is a large abundance of kaolinitic clays, however its development is not yet achieved. In order to answer this demand a research project was initiated with the aim of optimizing the production of MK in Portugal and enhancing the durability of aerial calcitic lime mortars, to be mainly used in conservation and restoration of historical buildings. With the objective of studying the compounds formed in lime/MK and their stability during time, we have prepared different lime/MK ratio pastes (molar ratios). These lime/MK pastes were stored at saturated conditions (RH > 95%) and 23 ± 2 °C temperature being analysed at several ages by TGA-DTA, XRD and SEM-EDS. In this paper the results obtained are presented and discussed.

For preserving concrete structures and hindering ingress of chemicals through cracks and fissures, repair is inevitable. Microbial calcite precipitation is an intrinsic approach for crack rectification and emulating way of sustainability for reducing anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs) along with conserving the natural resources. In this study,Bacillus subtilisstrain is applied for intrinsic repair of concrete’s cracks because of its high pH endurance and capability of sporulation. For prolonged survival of microorganisms, immobilization technique was employed.B. subtiliswas immobilized through limestone powder (LSP) before adding into cement matrix. Self-healing proficiency ofB. subtiliswas deliberated in terms of mechanical strength regain after cracking at 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. To examine the microstructure and characterization of healing precipitate, micrographical (field emission scanning electron microscopy), chemical (energy dispersive X-ray), and thermal (thermogravimetric analysis) analyses were performed after the healing period of 28 days. The results revealed evident signs of calcite precipitation in nano-/microcracks subsequent to microbial activity. Furthermore, immobilized LSP improved the compressive strength of the analyzed formulations.

This paper analyzes the characterization of YHWH as a political ruler in Exodus 3-15. His role as king of Israel comes as a novelty in the biblical narrative after the book of Genesis, and in the book of Exodus he presents new divine traits such as jealousy, wrathfulness and holiness. Among his new traits as a ruler comes the concern with his reputation, both in the short and long term, amidst his followers and even his enemies. A close-reading of the Plagues narratives thus shows God’s actions stemming from his political reasoning and strategies, which aim at driving the whole earth — especially Israel, his chosen people — to acknowledge his absolute power and rule.
