Hydrogel biomaterials were synthesized by radical copolymerization of N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) and 2-hydroxyethylmathacrylate (HEMA), with azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator, reacting at 60~70°C for 24 hours, which were designed as contact lens due to the good chemical stability and high biocompatibility. The absorbency of bovine serum albumin (BSA) was measured by the ultraviolet spectrophotometer. The influence of pH, initial protein concentration and ionic strength were investigated in detail. The results showed that the absorption of protein on hydrogel biomaterials increased with the immersing time increasing, and was stable during 4 days. The absorption of protein on hydrogel increased with the equilibrium water content increasing. The protein absorption on hydrogels reduced the permeability of the oxygen of the biomaterials.

ABSTRACTIn-diffusion experiments for Cs+ and I− in sandstone were performed as a function of ionic strength ([NaCl]=0.01, 0.51M) and tracer concentration ([CsI]=7.5E-5, 1.5E-2M) together with the measurements of the physical and chemical properties of sandstone, and apparent diffusivities (Da) for Cs+ were obtained. The obtained Da-values for Cs+ scarcely depended on [NaCl], but increased with increasing [Cs+]. This trend is consistent with that of rock capacity factors (α), indicating that distribution coefficient (Kd) onto sandstone and effective diffusivity scarcely depend on [NaCl]. The concentration profiles of I− were all in already breakthrough. Although this indicates that I− diffusion is faster than that of Cs+, the concentration profiles of I− may have been lower than those for blank samples, judging synthetically from the correlations between α-values and the concentration profiles of Cs+ and from the concentration profiles of I− in the blank samples. Finally, the effects of [Cs+] and[NaCl] on Kd/-values for Cs+ were discussed from the viewpoint of adsorption by ion exchange and electrostatic attraction. The kd-values were considered to be combined sorption by both reactions.

ABSTRACTZirconolite is a potential inorganic matrix that is currently investigated in France, in the framework of the 1991 radioactive waste management law, with a view to provide durable containment of the trivalent and tetravalent minor actinides like neptunium, curium, americium and small quantities of unrecyclable plutonium separated from other nuclear waste. To confirm the actinide loading capacity of the zirconolite calcium site and to study the physical and chemical stability of this type of ceramic when subjected to alpha self-irradiation, zirconolite ceramic pellets were fabricated with 10 wt% plutonium oxide (isotope 239 or 238). The 55 pellets are dense (> 93.3% of the theoretical density on average) and free of cracks. They are characterized by a grain size of between 10 and 20 micrometers. X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed the presence of the zirconolite 2M crystalline structure.
