Hollow magnetic structures have great potential to be used in the microwave absorbing field. Herein, Fe3O4 hollow spheres with different levels of hollowness were synthesized by the hydrothermal method under Ostwald ripening effect. In addition to their microstructures, the microwave absorption properties of such spheres were investigated. The results show that the grain size and hollowness of Fe3O4 hollow spheres both increase as the reaction time increases. With increasing hollowness, the attenuation ability of electromagnetic wave of Fe3O4 spheres increases first and then decreases, finally increases sharply after the spheres break down. Samples with strong attenuation ability can achieve good impedance matching, which it does preferentially as the absorber thickness increases. Fe3O4 hollow spheres show the best microwave absorption performance when the reaction time is 24 h. The minimum reflection loss (RL (min)) can reach −40 dB, while the thickness is only 3.2 mm.

AbstractRecently, multilevel structural carbon aerogels are deemed as attractive candidates for microwave absorbing materials. Nevertheless, excessive stack and agglomeration for low-dimension carbon nanomaterials inducing impedance mismatch are significant challenges. Herein, the delicate “3D helix–2D sheet–1D fiber–0D dot” hierarchical aerogels have been successfully synthesized, for the first time, by sequential processes of hydrothermal self-assembly and in-situ chemical vapor deposition method. Particularly, the graphene sheets are uniformly intercalated by 3D helical carbon nanocoils, which give a feasible solution to the mentioned problem and endows the as-obtained aerogel with abundant porous structures and better dielectric properties. Moreover, by adjusting the content of 0D core–shell structured particles and the parameters for growth of the 1D carbon nanofibers, tunable electromagnetic properties and excellent impedance matching are achieved, which plays a vital role in the microwave absorption performance. As expected, the optimized aerogels harvest excellent performance, including broad effective bandwidth and strong reflection loss at low filling ratio and thin thickness. This work gives valuable guidance and inspiration for the design of hierarchical materials comprised of dimensional gradient structures, which holds great application potential for electromagnetic wave attenuation. A facile method for the preparation of microwave absorbers with low density, high microwave absorptivity, and broad band is of paramount importance to the progress in practical application. Herein, commonly-used metal organic frameworks (MOFs) prepared just by mechanical stirring in methanol at room temperature were chosen as sacrificial templates to synthesize porous carbon composites with tunable dielectric and magnetic properties. With the replacement of Co atoms on the surface of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) by Zn atoms, a Co-doped porous carbon composite with a low-dielectric amorphous carbon/Zn shell was constructed after annealing, leading to excellent impedance matching condition. Consequently, the as-obtained composite (Co/C@C-800) shows marvelous microwave absorption properties with an absorption capacity of −43.97 dB and a corresponding effective absorption bandwidth of 4.1 GHz, far exceeding that of the traditional porous carbon and composites directly derived from ZIF-67. The results provide a convenient way to modify MOFs for enhanced microwave absorption materials from the synergy of dielectric and magnetic losses.

ZnO nanocrystals were introduced into Fe3O4/MWCNTs composites to improve the impedance matching and electromagnetic (EM) wave attenuation of the system. The as-synthesized ZnO/Fe3O4/MWCNTs composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. SEM and TEM images showed that Fe3O4 microspheres 100–200[Formula: see text]nm in size connected MWCNTs. Analysis of EM parameters revealed that the impedance matching of the ZnO/Fe3O4/MWCNTs composites was considerably improved after ZnO nanocrystals were introduced. The ZnO/Fe3O4/MWCNTs composites exhibited a highly efficient microwave absorption (MA) capacity within the tested frequency range of 2–18[Formula: see text]GHz. The optimal reflection loss of EM waves was [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]dB at 6.08[Formula: see text]GHz with an absorber thickness of 3.5[Formula: see text]mm. The excellent MA properties of the composites could be attributed to the improved impedance matching, interfacial polarization, and combined effects of dielectric and magnetic losses.

Al/Fe/Co doped ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) composites have been synthesized by a facile method, and the influence of dopant on the electromagnetic (EM) and microwave absorption properties was investigated in the frequency range of 2–18[Formula: see text]GHz. Compared with Fe/Co–OMC composites, the Al–OMC nanocomposite played a great role in adjusting values and frequency dependence of complex permittivity, which gives rise to significant improved microwave absorption and reduced thickness of the corresponding paraffin wax composites. Reflection loss (RL) values less than [Formula: see text]5[Formula: see text]dB and [Formula: see text]10[Formula: see text]dB were obtained in the frequency range of 9.2–18[Formula: see text]GHz and 10.7–14.7[Formula: see text]GHz with a single thickness of 2.00[Formula: see text]mm, respectively. Such enhanced EM wave absorption property of the Al–OMC/paraffin wax composite was ascribed to its superior impedance matching characteristic. Thin thickness, broadband absorption microwave absorbers with Al doped OMC nanocomposites were obtained.
