Abstract Background: Beetroot juice has been demonstrated to decrease blood pressure due to the high inorganic nitrate content, but few studies have tested the effect of other high nitrate vegetable juices on blood pressure. Methods: This pilot randomized crossover trial aimed to investigate the effect of two different high nitrate vegetable juices on plasma nitrate concentrations and blood pressure in healthy adults. Eighteen healthy volunteers were randomized to receive 115 ml of beetroot juice or 250 ml of green leafy vegetable juice for seven days. Blood samples were collected, and clinic blood pressure measured at baseline and at the end of each juice consumption. Daily home blood pressure assessment was conducted two hours after juice consumption. Nitrate and nitrite concentrations were analysed using a commercially available kit on a Triturus automated ELISA analyser. Hills and Armitage analysis was used for the two- period crossover design and paired sample t- tests were performed to compare within-group changes. Results: Plasma nitrate and nitrite concentration significantly increased and there was significant reduction in clinic and home SBP mean during the beetroot juice period (P-values 0.004 and 0.002, respectively). Home DBP reduced significantly during green leafy vegetable juice consumption week (P-value 0.03). The difference between groups did not reach statistical significance during the formal crossover analysis adjusted for period effects. Conclusion: Beetroot juice and green leafy vegetable juice may reduce systolic or diastolic blood pressure but there was no statistically significant difference between the two juices, although this was only a pilot study.

Mouthwash is an additional mechanical oral cavity cleaning method which is known to reduce oral bacterias that causes plaque build ups. Mouthwash may and may not contain alcohol. The objective of this study was to determine the alterations on the oral cavity environment (salivary pH and plaque index) before and after gargling with alcohol and non-alcohol mouthwash, and to analyze which of the mouthwash is more effective. This study was an experimental study with one group pre test and post test experimental design. The subject of this study was 16 of University of Sumatera Utara’s female undergraduates whose age ranges from 18–23 years old and accorded to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subjects were divided in two groups, subjects were instructed to used the mouthwash twice a day for seven days, then salivary pH and plaque index were measured at third and seventh day of used. Repeated Annova test results shown a significant decreas on salivary pH and plaque index after gargled with mouthwash containing alcohol, in the non-alcohol mouthwash there was a significant decreased in plaque index but none on the salivary pH. Dependent T-test results shown that there were no difference in salivary pH and plaque index after gargled with alcohol containing and non-alcohol mouthwash. This study shows that non-alcohol mouthwash is better because there were a significant decrease in plaque index, without caused significant decreases in pH scores.

Abstract: Saliva plays a role in the occurrence of dental caries. The low of buffer capacity and secretion of saliva leads to reduced salivary ability in wash away food particles, deadly micro organisms and neutralize the salivary pH. Changes in the salivary pH is influenced by circadian rhythms, the type of food consumed, stimulation of salivary secretion, salivary flow rate, micro organisms of the oral cavity and salivary buffer capacity. Xylitol is a sweetener similar to polyols that are non-acidogenic and non-cariogenic. Xylitolis difficult to be fermented by bacteria in the oral cavity so can help to increasing the decreases of salivary pH due  the consumption of foods containing carbohydrates. In the field of dentistry, xylitol has been applied in a wide range of products such as chewing gums, lozenges, mouth washes and toothpastes. This study was conducted to determine the salivary pH before brushing teeth with tooth paste containing xylitol, the salivary pHafter brushing teeth with tooth paste containing xylitol and the changes of salivary pH after brushing teeth with tooth paste containing xylitol. The research design used was analytics experimental pretest and posttest design. The population used were 56 students of MA Darul Istiqamah Manado. Sampling was done by using simple random sampling technique with 20 samples were obtained by matched-pair research formula. Saliva collection methodsused werethe spittingmethod. The results showed a change in the salivary pH after brushing teeth with tooth paste containing xylitol. The average value ofthe salivary pH after brushing teeth with tooth paste containing xylitol were 7,18 higher than the average value of the salivary pH before brushing teeth with tooth paste containing xylitol were 6.99. Results of statistical tests of paired-samples t-test showed that there were significant differences (p <0.05) of the salivary pH before and after brushing teeth with tooth paste containing xylitol. Conclution: Xylitol has a role in increasing the salivary pH which helps in inhibiting dental caries. Keywords: salivary pH, brushing teeth, toothpaste containing xylitol.

Background: Salivary fluid creates a particular environment of oral cavity that helps in mastication, lubrication of food and mucosa and in speech. Intake of food and different liquids (drinks, juices, milk) causes modulation in pH of saliva that lead to change in the environment of oral cavity.  The pH of saliva decreases to acidic side when bacteria breakdown the carbohydrates and start releasing acids, these acids damage the structure of tooth and leads to cavity formation i.e. dental caries. Objective: The current study is aimed to evaluate the salivary pH of diabetic and healthy individual before and after using honey and vinegar mouth rinses. Methods: It was a pre-clinical experimental study conducted in dental OPD of Baqai medical college Karachi from 1st January to 15th February. The calculated sample size N=80 was divided in 4 groups, Group A, n=20 healthy participants who rinsed with honey mouth rinse, Group B n=20 diabetics patients who rinsed with honey mouth rinse. Similarly, Group C, n=20 healthy participants who rinsed with vinegar mouth rinse and Group D, n=20 diabetic patients who rinsed with vinegar mouth rinse. 2 ml of saliva was collected by asking the participants to collect it in the floor of the mouth and swallowing for one minute was prohibited and after that they were asked to expectorate it into the sterile container. Then they were given the mouth rinse according to group distribution and after rinsing they were asked to wait for half an hour after that saliva was again collected from same participant to identify the rinse induced change in pH of oral cavity. Results: There was no any significant change in healthy participants of either group however in diabetic individuals significant change was observed by honey mouth rinse (p-value = 0.033) followed by vinegar mouth rinse (p-value = 0.043). Conclusion: Honey and vinegar mouth rinses are effective in maintaining the salivary pH in diabetic individuals.

Background: The blood pressure (BP)-lowering effect of beetroot is attributed to its high nitrate concentration, which converts to the vasodilator nitric oxide. Nitric oxide may also mediate ocular aqueous outflow to regulate intraocular pressure (IOP). Aims: We investigated the effect of beetroot juice on IOP and ocular vessel density. Subjects and Methods: With a single-blind, crossover design, 19 healthy young adults participated on 2 days 1 week apart. On Visit 1, baseline IOP, BP, and ocular vessel density (optical coherence tomography angiography, disc, and macula) were measured. Three hours after consumption of 16 ounces of beetroot juice or water (randomly assigned), all measurements were repeated. On Visit 2, baseline and 3-hour post-consumption measurements were assessed, with each subject consuming the drink not ingested on Visit 1. Results: Paired-samples t-test showed 1) no difference in IOP change post-water vs post-beet root juice (P = 0.27), and 2) mean systolic and diastolic BPs were lower only post-beet root juice (systolic: -4.8 (SEM ± 2.1) mm Hg, P = 0.032, 95% CI (0.47, 9.11); diastolic: -6.2 (SEM± 1.4) mm Hg, P <0.001, 95% CI (3.27, 9.15)). Superficial vessel density was significantly lower in several macular regions post-beet root juice, but not post-water (Wilcoxon signed ranks test, immediately superior, inferior, and temporal to center; respective P values of 0.016, 0.035, and 0.046). Conclusions: Beetroot juice lowers BP and macular vessel density, but does not lower IOP in young, healthy adults. Further investigation into its effect on IOP and vessel density in glaucomatous eyes is warranted. Keywords: beetroot, blood pressure, intraocular pressure, vessel density.

Abstract: Saliva is a complex fluid composed of a mixture of major and minor salivary glands in the oral cavity. The role of saliva is as a protective base between the lining of the oral cavity and toxins. Smoking can affect the physiological function of saliva because smoking destroys molecules in saliva that are useful in protecting the oral cavity, therefore, lack of sensitivity and changes in the sense receptor of taste occur. Saliva acidity setting includes protein, bicarbonate, and phosphate systems. This study was aimed to determine the salivary pH of the habitual smokers among the laborers at Bitung Port. This was an observational descriptive study using a cross sectional design. Respondents were 30 laborers (males and females) who were habitual smokers, aged 18-45 years old obtained by using purposive sampling technique. The results showed that 13 respondents (43.3%) had normal salivary pH (pH 6.4-7) and 17 respondents (56.7%) had basic salivary pH (pH >7). The average pH of all respondents was 7.18. Conclusion: Laborers who were habitual smokers at Bitung port had normal or basic salivary pH.Keywords: salivary pH, laborers, habitual smokers Abstrak: Saliva merupakan cairan mulut yang kompleks terdiri dari campuran sekresi kelenjar saliva mayor dan minor di dalam rongga mulut dan berperan sebagai pelindung basa antara lapisan mulut dan toksin. Nilai rerata pH responden sebesar 7,18. The significant using of drugs and the prevalence of drug addiction in the last decades necessitates the study of the effects of opioids on the structural organization of organs and systems. The people with drug addiction syndrome have functional disorders of the salivary glands earlier than morphological changes in the mucous membrane of oral cavity.Reducing the amount of saliva and changing its composition lead to negative changes in the oral barrier function, salivary pH which is the main natural regulator of oral cavity homeostasis. This publication demonstrates the morphological changes of the submandibular salivary gland under the opioid effect at the 6th week of the experimental research.
