A common accident that can occur at a gas station is a gas explosion. Assuming that a boiling liquid expanded vapor explosion (BLEVE) occurred at a gas station, a total of 117 scenarios were considered at ambient temperatures of -5.9, 20, and 34.8 °C; relative humidities of 58%, 69%, and 84%; and fill rates of 30 to 90% by changing the storage tank volume by 5%. The scenario was compared and analyzed using the ALOHA BLEVE-Fireball Model. The damage prediction involves the formation of a fire ball by BLEVE that emits radiant heat, which can affect the human body. Human damages were classified as second degree burn, pain, and no pain. The damage evaluation confirmed that pain could be felt over a 987 m radius in the worst conditions. In addition, the second-degree burn and pain areas were significantly affected by the exposure time.

Abstract Introduction Burn is one of the most severe traumas that causes coagulative destruction of the skin. The use of various products that accelerate wound healing in patients with burn may affect the patient’s survival and reduce the complications that may be seen. In the present study we aimed effects of subcutaneous ozone injection on second degree burn wound. Methods A total of 72 Sprague-Dawley male rats included in the study were divided randomly into three groups (control group (CG), silver sulfadiazine group (SG), ozone group (OG)) and each group was divided randomly two subgroups (as sacrificed on d7 and on d14).A deep second degree scald burns were created on the lower back. In CG subcutaneous 0.9% serum saline was injected daily into the burn area. In SG, burns were dressed with silver sulfadiazine daily and in OG subcutaneous ozone was injected daily into the burn area. Tissue hydroxyproline level measurement and histopathological evaluation were done. Results When the groups were compared in terms of weight change, no significant difference was found on the 7th and 14th days. In the evaluation made in terms of tissue hydroxyproline, tissue hydroxyproline level in OG was found to be significantly higher on both the 7th and 14th days (p < 0.001). In histopathological evaluations, it was determined that wound healing in OG was significantly higher than in the other groups. Conclusions According to the results, subcutaneous ozone therapy is more effective than silver sulphadiazine in the healing process of second-degree burn wounds and it can be safely used in the treatment of burn wounds.

Background. Most of the current models for experimental burns pose difficulties in ensuring consistency and standardization.Aim of Study. We aimed to develop an automated, reproducible technique for experimental burns using steam-based heat transfer.Methods. The system developed for steam exposure was based on a novel, integrated, computer-controlled design. Three groups of rats were exposed to steam for 1, 3, and 7 seconds. The lesions were evaluated after 20 minutes, 48 hours, and 72 hours after burn induction.Results. One-second steam application produced a superficial second-degree burn; three-second application induced deep second-degree burn; and seven-second application led to a third-degree burn.Conclusion. The high level of automation of our integrated, computer-controlled system makes the difference between our system and other models, by ensuring the control of the duration of exposure, temperature, and pressure and eliminating as many potential human generated errors as possible. The automated system can accurately reproduce specific types of burns, according to histological assessment. This model could generate the reproducible data needed in the study of burn pathology and in order to assess new treatments.

ABSTRACT Background: Various studies indicate that the green tea has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties. Moreover, a few studies have been carried out that demonstrate beneficial effects of green tea on burned patients. Materials and Methods: In this study, green tea, Vaseline, and silver sulfadiazine dressings were used as first-aid treatment to deep dermal contact burns in rats, compared with a control of nothing. After creating second-degree burn on the dorsum of rats, the treatments were applied for 15 min in four groups. Wound dressing changes were daily. Macroscopic study was performed on days 1, 3, 7, and 14 by using a digital camera and software processing of photos. Microscopic examination was done by pathologic evaluation of skin specimens on day 14. Results: We observed that green tea usage significantly decreased burn size in comparison to the control group (P = 0.004). Conclusion: Green tea is effective on healing process of second degree burn wounds.

Abstract Prevention of infections is a very important issue in treating the burn wounds. The nanosilver dressings have many promising advantages, but absorption of silver ions and its adverse effects to the body were always a question. The aim of this study was to compare Silver serum levels and acute toxic effects of nanosilver on histopathology of organs (lungs, liver, kidney, spleen, and brain) in two types of AgiCoat and Acticoat (nanosilver) dressings on second-degree deep burn in rat. This is an experimental study conducted in our animal laboratory. We divided 24 Sprague–Dawley male rats weighing 300 to 350 randomly into two groups. After anesthesia, a second deep-degree burn was made over dorsal skins of rats by standard method. For group A, Agicoat and, for group B, Acticoat dressings were used. The dressings were changed every 3 days with AgiCoat and Acticoat, respectively. After 14 days, we got blood samples and tissue samples taken from heart, liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs, and brain and a sample from dorsal skin of the rat for histopathological examinations. The results showed that the levels of serum silver in both groups were significantly higher than the standard level (1.22 part per million (PM); AgiCoat, P = .017; Acticoat, P = .000), but there was no significant difference between the groups (P = .551). Examination of the relationship between the level of serum silver and histopathological changes in liver showed that hepatotoxicity of AgiCoat was higher compared with Acticoat and the difference was significant (P = .002). There were no pathological changes in brain, kidneys, spleen, heart, and lungs. Wound healing was faster in Acticoat group. The nanosilver dressings can cause toxicity in liver but not in kidney, brain, spleen, heart, and lungs. Liver pathology and hepatotoxicity were more prominent in AgiCoat group. Wound healing was faster in Acticoat group.
