Correlation between lipid profile and different types of aggressive behaviour in combatants

ObjectivesAt present there is a discussion whether cholesterol level, aggression and violence are connected for they are characteristic behavioral patterns in combatants suffering particularly from PTSD.MethodWith the help of the Aggressive Behaviour Assessment Scale we examined 337 combatants and 116 healthy people, also we held an additional investigation of serum concentration of lipid profile. Reliability of results was evaluated by the Mann-Whitney U-test. Also the correlation analysis (Spearman rank correlation coefficient) was carried out.ResultsCombatants showed an integrated overall index of aggression twice as much in comparison with the control group (2,44 ± 0,09 and 1,08 ± 0,08, Ð < 0,00001), impulsive aggression was five times greater (2,08 ± 0,12 and 0,39 ± 0,06, Ð < 0,00001), premeditated aggression was 1,7-fold (3,15 ± 0,11 and 1,78 ± 0,13, Ð < 0,00001). The highest points of emotional (impulsive, hostile) aggressive behaviour revealed negative links with concentrations of cholesterol (r = −0,109, Ð < 0,05), LDL total cholesterol (r = −0,109, Ð < 0,05), triglycerides (−0,137 ≥ r ≥ −0,108, Ð < 0,05). Certain positions of premeditated (instrumental) aggression positively correlated with level of total cholesterol (0,140 ≥ r ≥ 0,126, Ð < 0,01), LDL total cholesterol (0,141 ≥ r ≥ 0,161, Ð < 0,01).ConclusionsReduction of cholesterol level and its most atherogenic fractions increases intensity of impulsive aggression and diminishes instrumental aggression of aggressive behaviour whereas increase of lipid profile leads to opposite results. The obtained data can be of great importance for treatment and prophylaxis of cardio-vascular disorders which are so typical for combat veterans.

Background: Lipid profile effects is a risk factor for Coronary Heart Disease. Soursop leaves (Annona muricata L) isa traditional medicine plant containing metabolic compounds that contribute to the improvement of the lipid profile.Objective: To determine the effects of soursop leaves extract on lipid profile (total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDLcholesterol and triglyceride).Methods: An experimental study using randomized pre-posttest with control group design. Sample consisted of 28 maleWistar rats, were divided into four groups. The control group (K) was only given High Fat High Cholesterol (HFHC)diet and treatment groups (P1, P2, P3) were given a HFHC diet plus Annona muricata L extract with doses of 100, 200and 300 mg/kgBB per day for 28 days respectively. Data were analyzed by Wilcoxon test, Kruskal-Wallis and MannWhitney.Results: The mean total cholesterol level significantly decreased in the treatment group P1 (p = 0.028) from 60.7 mg/dl(47.6-75.3) to 45.5 mg/dl (38.4-62.4). Mean HDL cholesterol level significantly increased in the treatment group P2(p=0.043) from 26.0 mg/dl (19.7-35.3) to 27.9 mg/dl (18.8-38.0). The mean levels of LDL cholesterol and triglyceridedecreased but not significantly.Conclusion: The administration of Annona muricata L extract can decrease total cholesterol and increase HDLcholesterol significantly.

Latar Belakang: Dislipidemia adalah terjadinya kelainan metabolisme lipid, baik peningkatan maupun penurunan fraksi lipid dalam darah. Kelainan fraksi lipid yang utama adalah kenaikan kadar kolesterol total, kenaikan kadar LDL, kenaikan kadar trigliserida serta penurunan kadar HDL. Tingginya kadar lipid dalam darah dapat menyebabkan terjadinya aterosklerosis, yang ditandai dengan terdapatnya ateroma pada bagian intima arteri yang berisi kolesterol, zat lipoid, dan lipofag. Perkembangan lebih lanjut dari aterosklerosis ini akan menimbulkan komplikasi pada organ target diantaranya jantung dan otak. Tujuan Penelitian: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian ekstrak etanol herba poguntano (EEHP) terhadap profil lipid tikus putih jantan dislipidemia (penurunan kadar kolesterol total, kadar trigliserida, kadar LDL dan peningkatan kadar HDL) serta terhadap proses aterosklerosis. Metode Penelitian: Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap 30 ekor tikus putih jantan yang dibagi dalam 6 kelompok. Kelompok I sebagai kontrol normal, kelompok II sebagai kontrol negatif diberikan Na-CMC dosis 10 ml/kg bb, kelompok III sebagai kontrol positif diberikan atorvastatin dosis 2 mg/kg bb, kelompok IV, V, dan VI sebagai kelompok perlakuan diberi EEHP dosis 75, 150 dan 300 mg/kg bb. Hewan uji diberi induksi pakan tinggi lemak yang berupa campuran kuning telur puyuh, minyak jelantah, dan lemak sapi selama 14 hari berturut-turut untuk mendapatkan hewan uji dislipidemia yang dilanjutkan dengan treatment selama 14 hari berturut-turut. Pengukuran kadar profil lipid dilakukan pada hari ke-28. Hasil: Hasil analisis statistik menunjukkan bahwa EEHP dapat menurunkan kadar kolesterol total, kadar trigliserida, dan kadar LDL serta dapat meningkatkan kadar HDL secara nyata (p < 0,05). Kesimpulan: Berdasarkan hasil diatas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa EEHP mempuyai pengaruh terhadap profil lipid tikus dislipidemia (penurunan kadar kolesterol total, kadar trigliserida, kadar LDL dan peningkatan kadar HDL) serta dapat mencegah proses terjadinya aterosklerosis. Background: Dysplipidemia is a lipid metabolism dysfunctionsuch as the incline and the decline of blood lipid profile. The main abnormallipid fractionlevel are the increase of total cholesterol level, LDL level, and triglyceride and the decline of HDL level. The high level of blood lipid can cause atherosclerosis with the atheroma in arterial intima that contains cholesterol, lipoid, and lipophage. The advance stage of atherosclerosis can cause complications to target organs such as heart and brain. Objectives: This research aimed to evaluate the effects of herbapurganto (PiciaPicriaFelTerraeLour) ethanol extract on Lipid Profile of Dyspilidemic Male Rat(the decline of total cholesterol level, triglyceride level, LDL level, and the increase of HDL level) and also the atherosclerosis process. Research method: This research was conducted to 30male ratswhich dividedinto 6 groups. Group 1was served as the normal control, Group 2was servedas negative controls which were given 10 ml/kg bb Na-CMC , Group 3 was served as positive controls which were given 2 mg/kg bb of atorvastatin dosage, Group 4, 5, and 6 were served as the treatment group, and administered with EEHP at the dose of 75, 150, and 300 mg/kb bb . The test animals were fedwith high fatdiet using quail yolk, used cooking oil, and cow fat mixture for 14 days consecutively to obtain dyslipidemia subjects and continued with 14 consecutively treatment. The measure of lipid profile was conducted in the 28th day. Finding: The statistical analysis results indicated that EEHP could decrease the total of cholesterol level, triglyceride level, LDL level, and also it could increase the HDL level (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Based on the results, it could be concluded that EEHP haseffect towards dyslipidemia rat(the decline of total cholesterol level, triglyceride level, LDL level, and the increase of HDL level) and it could also prevent atherosclerosis.

ObjectivesCombatants with PTSD show a higher level of aggression and dysfunctional anger influencing clinical picture and determining tolerance to treatment. Interrelations between emotional dysfunctions (anger), symptoms of combat-related PTSD and aggression are not clear.MethodWe studied relations between aggression, anger and PTSD symptoms in the group of 557 males-combatants (109 patients had marked symptoms of PTSD, 448 men showed subclinical symptoms), and in the control group of 234 healthy males. We used the Mississippi Scale for quantitative evaluation of PTSD and authorial methods for assessing anger and aggression.ResultsImpulsive aggression is the main form in veterans with PTSD, exceeding sevenfold indices in the control group (21,17 ± 1,92; 3,18 ± 0,38, P < 0,00001). Indices of this aggression are equal to level of instrumental aggression (3,03 ± 0,27; 3,88 ± 0,19, P < 0,001), in the control group various forms of aggression differed greatly, level of these types of aggressive behaviour was lower (0,45±0,06; 1,88±0,09, P < 0,0000001).Correlation analysis of indices of different aggressive behaviour and anger showed that dysfunctional anger has strong positive interrelations only with indices of impulsive (affective-hostile) aggression (P < 0,01), similar correlation with instrumental aggression was not discovered. In the control group significant correlations between anger and aggressive behaviour were not found.ConclusionsImpulsive aggression is mostly expressed in combatants with PTSD. Anger is the main determining factor for level, strength, intensity and frequency of impulsive aggression. Association between anger and PTSD is unique for combatants with impulsive aggression. Dysfunctional anger serves a general pathogenetic factor for combat-related PTSD and impulsive aggression.

Objectives. Several experimental studies have reported antiobesity and lipid-improving effects of Citrus unshiu. However, clinical studies on its effects are lacking. This study was designed to evaluate the impact of Citrus unshiu peel pellet (CUPP) on obesity and lipid profile. Methods. For 118 patients with body mass index (BMI) > 23 who took Citrus unshiu peel pellet (CUPP) for 4 weeks in a Public Health Center, laboratory and biometric readings before and after CUPP administration were analyzed. Results. Mean age of these subjects was 53.8±10.6 years (range: 18-75 years). There were 88 (74.6%) females in the study sample (n = 118). A significant (p < 0.01) decrease in BMI from 27.47±2.24 to 27.27±2.22 was observed in all subjects after CUPP treatment and 65.3% (N = 77) of them lost 1.03±0.83 kg of weight after 4 weeks of treatment. Total cholesterol level was significantly (p < 0.01) decreased from 204.0±37.4 mg/dL to 193.5±36.5 mg/dL. Significant (p < 0.05) decreases in levels of low-density lipoprotein, cholesterol, and triglyceride were also observed. Conclusions. These results suggest that CUPP in practice could help weight control and improve total cholesterol level. Findings of this study provide clinical foundation for future large-scale trials to establish clinical benefits of CUPP.

Objective: Hypocholesterolemia is a metabolism disorder that may be seen in chronic diseases and malignancies. Various dyslipidemia profiles have been shown in adult and pediatric hematological malignancies. We aimed to evaluate the lipid profile properties in patients diagnosed with a hematological malignancy compared to a healthy control group. Method: Out of 1213 patients diagnosed with hematologic malignancy, the data of 98 patients whose pretreatment lipid profiles had already been studied, were reviewed. Forty healthy individuals were selected as the control group. The levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were compared. Results: Triglyceride values were significantly higher (p=0.02), and the total cholesterol, LDL and HDL levels were lower in the study group compared to the control group. Triglyceride values were higher (p=0.013), and HDL levels were lower (p=0.022) in parallel with increases in uric acid levels. There was a significant correlation between the International Prognostic Index (IPI) score and TG (p=0.003) in those diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Whereas no significant correlation was found between TG, total cholesterol, and LDL values in the limited (early) and advanced stage NHL, while a significant negative correlation was found with HDL (p=0.027). Conclusion: Hypertriglyceridemia, as well as low LDL and HDL values may be seen in hematological malignancies. It should be kept in mind that there may be chronic diseases and malignancies in the etiology of incidental hypocholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. Further studies are needed on this subject to determine the effects of dyslipidemia on the pathogenesis and prognosis of the disease in hematological malignancies.

Background: Essential hypertension is a major public health associated with increase pressure on the vascular walls and red blood cells (RBCs). In the present work, osmotic fragility (OF) of RBCs was reexamined in the means of its correlation with two risk factor; iron status and lipid profile. Experimental: OF, iron status parameters, and lipid profile components were measured in 60 patients and compared with the results of 30 controls. Results: The results showed a significant increase in all iron indices of hypertensive patients in comparing with healthy control group except TIBC, UIBC, and transferrin concentrations, which decrease in these patients in comparing with control group. Serum TGs, total cholesterol, VLDLc, and LDLc were increased while there is no significant in serum HDLc in patients to comparing with control group. There is no significant change in OF between patients and controls where p=0.173. The iron status parameters and lipid profile components were dependent on sex and smoking state. Hemoglobin and PCV were correlated significantly with total cholesterol and LDLc. Transferrin saturation showed a positive correlation with cholesterol, LDLc, and TGs, but negatively correlated with HDLc. No significant correlation between all the measured parameters and OF in HT patients. There is a significant correlation between serum ferritin and systolic BP and between Hb and systolic BP. Conclusion: No significant effect on the OF in HT patients. HT patients have elevated level of iron parameters in comparing with controls. OD has no correlation with iron status parameters or with lipid profile components.

The effect of supplementing fattening pigs with oils differing in MUFA (monounusaturated fatty acids) and PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids) level addition for fatteners diets on the cholesterol content of m. longissimus was investigated. In a feeding trial with 48 crossbred pigs [? ($ White Polish Large x S Polish Landrace) x <$ Pietrain] randomly assigned to four treatments groups of 12 animals each (6 gilts and 6 barrows), dietary supplements of 3% maize, sunflower or linseed oil in the experimental groups and of 3% lard in the control group were applied. Total cholesterol in the longissimus muscle of linseed oil supplemented pigs was found to decrease significantly (PO.01) compared to the lard-fed pigs (60.75 vs. 71.37 mg/100 g of fresh tissue). Similar tendencies for reduced cholesterol level in longissimus muscle of sunflower and maize oil supplemented pigs were also noted. The production of pork with reduced total cholesterol seems to be important in terms of consumer health and culinary value.

The purpose of this study was to prove that the administration of Jati (Guazuma ulmifolia Lamk) leaves extract improves the lipid profile of dyslipidemic male Wistar rats. Subjects were 20 rats (Rattus norvegicus), male, Wistar strain, dyslipidemia (total cholesterol ≥ 200 mg dl-1), aged 2 months old, weighing 180-200 grams. The control group (10 rats) were given a placebo of 3 ml aquadest (P0) and the treatment group was given extracts of the Jati (Guazuma ulmifolia Lamk) leaves extract of 25 mg kg-1 BW (P1). Before and after treatment for 14 days, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, and HDL levels were examined. The results showed that in the P0 group there were no changes in total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, and HDL levels (p>0.05), whereas the P1 group experienced a decrease in total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL levels (p<0.05) and an increase in HDL levels (p<0.05). The results of this study indicated that the Jati leaves extract was effective to improve the lipid profile of dyslipidemic rats. It was necessary to compare the effectiveness of Jati leaves extract with synthetic dyslipidemia drugs used in the community such as statin.

Considering the excellent bio-therapeutic benefits of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, this study exploited the probiotic characteristics of Lactobacillus acidophilus-015, Lactobacillus casei-297 and Bifidobacterium bifidum-229 strains with natural prebiotic substances viz. banana powder, malto-dextrin and honey to produce synbiotic food formulations and to study the effect of feeding their on the cholesterol level (mg/dl) of albino rats. On the basis of the preliminary investigation, synbiotic products with 2% banana powder, with 2% malto-dextrin, with 3% honey and synbiotic product with 2% each of, banana powder and malto-dextrin and 1% of honey were selected for the investigation of the total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol. The products showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol level, however the control group receiving the cholesterol rich laboratory diet showed a significant increase (P LESS THEN 0.01) in the total cholesterol after 45 days of feeding. There was 25.81 to 45.05% reduction of serum cholesterol was observed in case of feeding synbiotic formulations. Increase in the HDL-cholesterol and decrease in the non-HDL cholesterol were also significant. Therefore, synbiotic formulation with all these three natural prebiotic have enhanced ability to decreased down the blood cholesterol level.

Background: Alcoholism is a major threat to public health in both developed and developing countries. Alcohol has many effects on lipid profile, including inducing de novo fatty acid synthesis and inhibiting fatty acid oxidation in liver. Aim of this study was to study the effect of alcohol consumption on serum lipid profile in alcoholics and to compare with those of non-alcoholic controls.Methods: 100 cases and 100 age and sex matched controls were selected. These subjects were classified into, 1. Moderate alcoholics: Consuming ≤210 g per week 2. Heavy alcoholics: Consuming >210 g per week. Blood was taken in fasting state and lipids were estimated.Results: Among 200 subjects, 94% were male. 58.5% of the male and 83.3% of the female were heavy drinkers. Maximum number of alcoholics were seen in the age group of 41-50 years. The height correlated well with both control and study group. The moderate dose alcoholics had a higher weight when compared to control group and heavy dose alcoholics. The heavy dose alcoholics had a lower BMI when compared with the control group and moderate dose alcoholics. Heavy dose alcohol consumption was associated with a higher increase in triglyceride level. The total cholesterol level was significantly higher in the heavy dose alcoholics when compared with the control group. The HDL level was highest in the moderate dose alcoholics. The LDL level was highest in heavy dose alcoholics whereas, the moderate dose alcoholics had a lesser LDL level when compared with the control group. The VLDL level steadily increased with alcohol consumption.Conclusions: Patients with heavy alcohol consumption had significant increase in total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and VLDL. The moderate alcohol consumers had significantly increased HDL and decreased LDL. These protective effects declined after heavy alcohol consumption.
