For energy production and also for the glass industry, finding new refractory alloys which could permit to increase the process temperatures to 1200°C or more is a permanent challenge. Chromium base alloys can be good candidates, considering the melting point of Cr itself, and also its low corrosion rate in molten glass. Two families of alloys have been studied for this purpose, Cr-Mo-W and Cr-Ta-X alloys (X= Mo, Si..). A finer selection of compositions has been done, to optimize their chemical and mechanical properties. Kinetics of HT oxidation by air, of corrosion by molten glass and also creep properties of several alloys have been measured up to 1250°C. The results obtained with the best alloys (Cr-Ta base) give positive indications as regards the possibility of their industrial use.

Antibacterial activity and fire retardation are equally desired for protective clothing. For achieving this, AgNP and MgO are independently researched as nanofillers in Polyurethane based electrospun nanofibers and their synergistic effect is scarcely addressed. This article reports synthesis and characterization of MgO of 70.01 nm and AgNP of 51 to 76 nm by solution combustion and hydrothermal routes respectively and their incorporation in electrospinning of Polyurethane. Flow rate 1 ml/hr, applied voltage 13 kV, tip to collector distance 15 cm were adopted for the electrospinning. Nanofibers of 65 nm were obtained for PU/MgO (3 wt. %) and 106 nm for PU/MgO (3 wt. %)/Ag (1 wt. %). Addition of MgO increased the melting point, after flame time and afterglow time. Incorporation of AgNP improved antibacterial activity. PU/MgO/Ag (2 wt. %) exhibited zone of inhibition of 2.1 cm and 3 cm against E. Coli and S. Aureus, respectively.

Salmonella newport phages 16–19 and 7–11 have very long heads and are members of two rare and so far little-known phage groups. Both produce various morphological aberrations. Preparations of phage 7–11 contain numerous polyheads and about 0.4% short heads belonging to nine size classes. In addition, one giant phage particle was observed. The head of phage 7–11 seems to be an icosahedron which became elongated by adding successive rows of subunits. Phages 16–19 and 7–11 have buoyant densities in CsCl of 1.43 and 1.48 g/mL and particle weights of 103 and 204 × 106 respectively. Both viruses contain double-stranded DNA, internal proteins, and sugars. Phage 16–19 contains 46.5% DNA of 35 × 106 molecular weight, and glucose. Phage 7–11 contains 47.5% DNA of 108 × 106 molecular weight, and mannose. Base compositions of phage and S. newport DNAs were determined from buoyant densities, melting point, and acid hydrolysis. Phage 16–19 contains 5.4% 5-methylcytosine.

ABSTRACTThe behaviour of 300 keV Ba ions implanted at room temperature with doses between 1015 and 1017 cm−2 in Mg single crystal and foils was investigated. The results show that the Ba ions do not occupy substitutions sites in Mg, either after the implantation or the annealing treatments. However, pronounced migration of Ba to the surface is observed above 380 °C. The remaining fraction overlaps with the aa-implanted distribution and forms small precipitates. This behaviour is not correlated with the recovery of the Mg lattice which is already complete at about 250 °C. The surface segregation of Ba delays the evaporation of Mg to temperatures near the melting point.

ABSTRACTWe studied the crystallization mechanism of ultra-fast phase change optical disks with recording layers made of GaSb material for digital versatile disk (DVD) systems. The results of a static recording test and an amorphous mark formation simulation suggest that GaSb maintains a high crystal growth rate even at temperatures 150 degrees lower than the material's melting point. Disks with recording layers made of this material have a write speed margin ranging from DVD 3× to 8× or more.

There is a need for electromechanical devices capable of operating in high temperature environments (>200°C) for a wide variety of applications. Today's wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductor based power electronics have demonstrated a potential of operating above 400°C, however they are still limited by packaging. Among the most promising alternative is the Au-Sn eutectic solder, which have been widely used due to its excellent mechanical and thermal properties. However, the operating temperature of this metallurgical system is still limited to ∼250°C owing to its melting temperature of 280°C. Therefore, a higher temperature resistant system is much needed, but without affecting the current processing temperature of ∼325°C typically exhibited in most high temperature Pb-Free solders. This paper presents the development and characterization of a fluxless die attach soldering process based on gold enriched solid liquid inter-diffusion (SLID). A low melting point material (eutectic Au-Sn) was deposited in the face of a substrate, whereas a high melting point material, gold in this instance, was deposited in its mating substrate. Deposition of all materials was performed using a jet vapor deposition (JVD) equipment where thicknesses were controlled to achieve specific compositions in the mixture. Sandwiched coupons where isothermally processed in a vacuum reflow furnace. SEM and EDS were employed to reveal the microstructural evolution of the samples in order to study the interfacial reactions of this fluxless bonding process. Mechanical characterization of the each individual intermetallic phase was achieved by nanoindentation. Differential scanning calorimetry demonstrated the progression of the SLID process by quantifying the remaining low melting point constituent as a function of time and temperature. Post-processed samples confirmed the inter-diffusion mechanism as evidenced by the formation of sound joints that proved to be thermally stable up to ∼490°C after the completion of the SLID process.

This study concerned a novel super-molecular ionic liquid synthesized by ammonium thiocyanate and caprolactam. The physical characters such as melting point and electric conductivity were investigated. Results showed that the melting point is -12.2°C at the molar ratio of 3:1 (caprolactam/ammonium thiocyanate), which is much lower than raw materials. The electric conductivities of synthesized ionic liquids were close to that of imidazole ILs. The structure of ionic liquid was characterized by IR,1HNMR and quantum chemical calculations. It was shown that the NH4+cation connected with caprolactam organic molecules by hydrogen bonds, leading to the forming of a super-molecular ion. The electrostatic attraction of super-molecular ion with anion was decreased because of the larger volume of super-molecular ion than original cation, thus the melting point decreased. The key properties that distinguish super-molecular ionic liquid from other ILs were the presence of supermolecular ion, which can be used to build up a hydrogen-bonded network. This type ion liquid was named as super-molecular ion liquid.
