ABSTRACTThe next generation of civil large aero-engines will employ greater bypass ratios compared with contemporary architectures. This results in higher exchange rates between exhaust performance and specific fuel consumption (SFC). Concurrently, the aerodynamic design of the exhaust is expected to play a key role in the success of future turbofans. This paper presents the development of a computational framework for the aerodynamic design of separate-jet exhaust systems for civil aero-engines. A mathematical approach is synthesised based on class-shape transformation (CST) functions for the parametric geometry definition of gas-turbine exhaust components such as annular ducts and nozzles. This geometry formulation is coupled with an automated viscous and compressible flow solution method and a cost-effective design space exploration (DSE) approach. The framework is deployed to optimise the performance of a separate-jet exhaust for very-high-bypass ratio (VHBR) turbofan engine. The optimisations carried out suggest the potential to increase the engine’s net propulsive force compared with a baseline architecture, through optimum exhaust re-design. The proposed method is able to identify and alleviate adverse flow-features that may deteriorate the aerodynamic behaviour of the exhaust system.

The aerodynamic performance of the bypass exhaust system is key to the success of future civil turbofan engines. This is due to current design trends in civil aviation dictating continuous improvement in propulsive efficiency by reducing specific thrust and increasing bypass ratio (BPR). This paper aims to develop an integrated framework targeting the automatic design optimization of separate-jet exhaust systems for future aero-engine architectures. The core method of the proposed approach is based on a standalone exhaust design tool comprising modules for cycle analysis, geometry parameterization, mesh generation, and Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) flow solution. A comprehensive optimization strategy has been structured comprising design space exploration (DSE), response surface modeling (RSM) algorithms, as well as state-of-the-art global/genetic optimization methods. The overall framework has been deployed to optimize the aerodynamic design of two civil aero-engines with separate-jet exhausts, representative of current and future engine architectures, respectively. A set of optimum exhaust designs have been obtained for each investigated engine and subsequently compared against their reciprocal baselines established using the current industry practice in terms of exhaust design. The obtained results indicate that the optimization could lead to designs with significant increase in net propulsive force, compared to their respective notional baselines. It is shown that the developed approach is implicitly able to identify and mitigate undesirable flow-features that may compromise the aerodynamic performance of the exhaust system. The proposed method enables the aerodynamic design of optimum separate-jet exhaust systems for a user-specified engine cycle, using only a limited set of standard nozzle design variables. Furthermore, it enables to quantify, correlate, and understand the aerodynamic behavior of any separate-jet exhaust system for any specified engine architecture. Hence, the overall framework constitutes an enabling technology toward the design of optimally configured exhaust systems, consequently leading to increased overall engine thrust and reduced specific fuel consumption (SFC).

This paper presents the development of an integrated approach which targets the aerodynamic design of separate-jet exhaust systems for future gas-turbine aero-engines. The proposed framework comprises a series of fundamental modeling theories which are applicable to engine performance simulation, parametric geometry definition, viscous/compressible flow solution, and design space exploration (DSE). A mathematical method has been developed based on class-shape transformation (CST) functions for the geometric design of axisymmetric engines with separate-jet exhausts. Design is carried out based on a set of standard nozzle design parameters along with the flow capacities established from zero-dimensional (0D) cycle analysis. The developed approach has been coupled with an automatic mesh generation and a Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) flow-field solution method, thus forming a complete aerodynamic design tool for separate-jet exhaust systems. The employed aerodynamic method has initially been validated against experimental measurements conducted on a small-scale turbine powered simulator (TPS) nacelle. The developed tool has been subsequently coupled with a comprehensive DSE method based on Latin-hypercube sampling. The overall framework has been deployed to investigate the design space of two civil aero-engines with separate-jet exhausts, representative of current and future architectures, respectively. The inter-relationship between the exhaust systems' thrust and discharge coefficients has been thoroughly quantified. The dominant design variables that affect the aerodynamic performance of both investigated exhaust systems have been determined. A comparative evaluation has been carried out between the optimum exhaust design subdomains established for each engine. The proposed method enables the aerodynamic design of separate-jet exhaust systems for a designated engine cycle, using only a limited set of intuitive design variables. Furthermore, it enables the quantification and correlation of the aerodynamic behavior of separate-jet exhaust systems for designated civil aero-engine architectures. Therefore, it constitutes an enabling technology toward the identification of the fundamental aerodynamic mechanisms that govern the exhaust system performance for a user-specified engine cycle.

The aerodynamic characteristics of the exhaust system have an important bearing on the economic aspects of the marine gas turbine. The exhaust volute is an important component of the exhaust system. The design of turbine exhaust volutes must take into account the structural demands of the gas turbine, the layout of the exhaust system as a whole in the engine room and the hull as well as its overall dimension requirements. This paper discusses the design principles of exhaust volutes. Given the hub-tip ratio dl/D1 of turbine exit (volute entry), a method is developed to rationally select the axial length L and radial width B. The selection of an annular diffuser and the relevant parameters along with the coordination of diffuser and collector are analyzed. On the basis of an analysis of experimental data the basic design criteria of exhaust volutes are proposed.

The present work is part of the Clean Sky 2 project Full-Fairing Rotor Head Aerodynamic Design Optimization (FURADO), which deals with the aerodynamic design optimization of a full-fairing rotor head for the Rapid And Cost-Effective Rotorcraft (RACER) compound helicopter. The rotor head is a major drag source and previous investigations have revealed that the application of rotor head fairings can be an effective drag reduction measure. As part of the full-fairing concept, a new blade-sleeve fairing was aerodynamically optimized for cruise flight. Within this publication, the newly developed blade-sleeve fairing is put to test on an isolated, five-bladed rotor head and compared to an already existing reference blade-sleeve fairing, which was developed at Airbus Helicopters. Numerical flow simulations are performed with ANSYS Fluent 2019 R2 considering a rotating rotor head with cyclic pitch movement. The aerodynamic forces of the isolated rotor head are analyzed to determine the performance benefit of the newly developed blade-sleeve fairing. A drag reduction of 4.7% and a lift increase of 20% are obtained in comparison to the Airbus Helicopters reference configuration. Furthermore, selected surface and flow field quantities are presented to give an overview on the occurring flow phenomena.

BackgroundRecent findings have shown that up to 60% of pheochromocytomas (PCCs) and paragangliomas (PGLs) are caused by germline or somatic mutations in one of the 11 hitherto known susceptibility genes: SDHA, SDHB, SDHC, SDHD, SDHAF2, VHL, HIF2A (EPAS1), RET, NF1, TMEM127 and MAX. This list of genes is constantly growing and the 11 genes together consist of 144 exons. A genetic screening test is extensively time consuming and expensive. Hence, we introduce next-generation sequencing (NGS) as a time-efficient and cost-effective alternative.MethodsTumour lesions from three patients with apparently sporadic PCC were subjected to whole exome sequencing utilizing Agilent Sureselect target enrichment system and Illumina Hi seq platform. Bioinformatics analysis was performed in-house using commercially available software. Variants in PCC and PGL susceptibility genes were identified.ResultsWe have identified 16 unique genetic variants in PCC susceptibility loci in three different PCC, spending less than a 30-min hands-on, in-house time. Two patients had one unique variant each that was classified as probably and possibly pathogenic: NF1 Arg304Ter and RET Tyr791Phe. The RET variant was verified by Sanger sequencing.ConclusionsNGS can serve as a fast and cost-effective method in the clinical genetic screening of PCC. The bioinformatics analysis may be performed without expert skills. We identified process optimization, characterization of unknown variants and determination of additive effects of multiple variants as key issues to be addressed by future studies.

Piping design for ‘revamp’ projects in the process industry requires the retrieval of large amounts of ‘as-built’ data from existing process plant installations. Positional data with a high degree of accuracy are required. Photogrammetry, the science of measurement from photographs, was identified in Imperial Chemical Industries plc (ICI) as a suitable tool for information retrieval. The mathematical formulation enabling the definition of three-dimensional positions from photographic information is described. The process of using ICI's photogrammetric system for the definition of complete objects such as structures and pipes is illustrated. The need for specialized photogrammetric software for design purposes is explained. A case study describing how the photogrammetric system has been applied is described and graphical outputs from this exercise are shown. It is concluded that this particular photogrammetric system has proved to be a cost effective and accurate tool for the retrieval of ‘as-built’ information.

The performance of a three dimensional computer code developed for predicting the flowfield in stationary and rotating turbomachinery blade rows is described in this study. The four stage Runge-Kutta numerical integration scheme is used for solving the governing flow equations and yields solution to the full, three dimensional, unsteady Euler equations in cylindrical coordinates. This method is fully explicit and uses the finite volume, time marching procedure. In order to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the code, steady solutions were obtained for several cascade geometries under widely varying flow conditions. Computed flowfield results are presented for a fully subsonic turbine stator and a low aspect ratio, transonic compressor rotor blade under maximum flow and peak efficiency design conditions. Comparisons with Laser Anemometer measurements and other numerical predictions are also provided to illustrate that the present method predicts important flow features with good accuracy and can be used for cost effective aerodynamic design studies.

Archaeological wrecks exposed on the sea floor are mapped using side-scan and multibeam techniques, whereas the detection of submerged archaeological sites, such as Stone Age settlements, and wrecks, partially or wholly embedded in sea-floor sediments, requires the application of high-resolution subbottom profilers. This paper presents a strategy for cost-effective, large-scale mapping of previously undetected sediment-embedded sites and wrecks based on subbottom profiling with chirp systems. The mapping strategy described includes (a) definition of line spacing depending on the target; (b) interactive surveying, for example, immediate detailed investigation of potential archaeological anomalies on detection with a denser pattern of subbottom survey lines; (c) onboard interpretation during data acquisition; (d) recognition of nongeological anomalies. Consequently, this strategy differs from those employed in several detailed studies of known wreck sites and from the way in which geologists map the sea floor and the geological column beneath it. The strategy has been developed on the basis of extensive practical experience gained during the use of an off-the-shelf 2D chirp system and, given the present state of this technology, it appears well suited to large-scale maritime archaeological mapping.
