AbstractIn product development, an automated generation of shape variations enables a rapid assessment of potentially appealing design directions. We present a framework for computing a product line-up of automotive body shapes based on spectral methods for mesh processing. We calculate the eigenspace projections of 3D vehicle meshes and identify the relevant style as well as content components based on the eigenvalues. The style of a model is then transferred to arbitrary prototype content car shapes, which allows for a rapid portfolio generation of various car types with minimal user interaction.

Environmental change poses a devastating risk to human and environmental health. Rapid assessment of water conditions is necessary for monitoring, evaluating, and addressing this global health danger. Sentinels or biological monitors can be deployed in the field using minimal resources to detect water quality changes in real time, quickly and cheaply. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are ideal sentinels for detecting environmental changes due to their biomedical tool kit, widespread geographic distribution, and well-characterized phenotypic responses to environmental disturbances. Here, we demonstrate the utility of zebrafish sentinels by characterizing phenotypic differences in wild zebrafish between two field sites in India. Site 1 was a rural environment with flowing water, low-hypoxic conditions, minimal human-made debris, and high iron and lead concentrations. Site 2 was an urban environment with still water, hypoxic conditions, plastic pollution, and high arsenic, iron, and chromium concentrations. We found that zebrafish from Site 2 were smaller, more cohesive, and less active than Site 1 fish. We also found sexually dimorphic body shapes within the Site 2, but not the Site 1, population. Advancing zebrafish sentinel research and development will enable rapid detection, evaluation, and response to emerging global health threats.

This paper discusses new developments in automated hull shape optimization spearheaded by the authors. The use of the linear diffraction-radiation panel code WAMIT® as a design tool is highlighted. Early optimization results yielded bodies with extreme shapes. A series of studies has been performed comparing model test data and numerical computations. The presented comparisons reinforce the numerical results. The authors connected the reliable hydrodynamic analysis provided by WAMIT® with a newly developed parametric hull design methodology. This allows the automated generation of hull shapes without requiring user interaction. Single- and multi-objective optimization algorithms are available to solve a wide range of nonlinear programming problems. The integrated system optimizes hulls by minimizing motions and forces in waves. This is especially important for innovative systems when prior design experience is missing. The results of an optimization run provide a wealth of information which can be utilized to support rational design decisions.

Relevance of the covered in this article questions of referring to standardization in the course of design engineering is defined nu the observed over the recent decade changes in the character of organization of the surrounding a human object world, its complication and growing disarray. The subject of research is the specificity of implementation of standardization principles in project engineering of industrial design with emphasis on interpretation of the latter as the activity on development of user experience. Special attention is given to the description and analysis of experience of referring to project capabilities of standardization in the course of developing design for industrial testing equipment. The author examines the modern research in the area of industrial design, as well classical works in the field of design theory. The scientific novelty consists in determination and specification of the role of standardization in modern industrial design, which currently underlies the development of experience of user interaction. An important outcome became the creation of a project, which novelty is substantiated by international patent. The result of implementation of standardization principles in the course of design engineering of control and protection mechanisms of testing equipment lies in the complex solution of such tasks, as ensuring stylistic unity of the entire product line, ergonomics of operators’ positions, conservation of material, human and time resources. The author outlines the prospects of implementation of standardization in industrial design in the nearest futures due to the need for bringing a growing array of technical devices to a common standard.

AbstractArtistic style transfer is to render an image in the style of another image, which is a challenge problem in both image processing and arts. Deep neural networks are adopted to artistic style transfer and achieve remarkable success, such as AdaIN (adaptive instance normalization), WCT (whitening and coloring transforms), MST (multimodal style transfer), and SEMST (structure-emphasized multimodal style transfer). These algorithms modify the content image as a whole using only one style and one algorithm, which is easy to cause the foreground and background to be blurred together. In this paper, an iterative artistic multi-style transfer system is built to edit the image with multiple styles by flexible user interaction. First, a subjective evaluation experiment with art professionals is conducted to build an open evaluation framework for style transfer, including the universal evaluation questions and personalized answers for ten typical artistic styles. Then, we propose the interactive artistic multi-style transfer system, in which an interactive image crop tool is designed to cut a content image into several parts. For each part, users select a style image and an algorithm from AdaIN, WCT, MST, and SEMST by referring to the characteristics of styles and algorithms summarized by the evaluation experiments. To obtain richer results, the system provides a semantic-based parameter adjustment mode and the function of preserving colors of content image. Finally, case studies show the effectiveness and flexibility of the system.

Producers of low volume, long life products must utilize the latest commercial, off the shelf (COTS) components in order to meet cutting edge technological needs. These COTS components often have a primary use in the high volume commercial markets (e.g. smart phones) which are characterized by short product lifecycles to satisfy consumer needs and remain competitive. Consequently, the two to three year lifecycles of these products tend to heavily influence the lifecycle of the components inside. Most tactical military products (as an example of low volume, long life products) have a very long design, production and support period that can often exceed ten years. Given the lifecycle mismatch between the products and components, an obsolescence management process is essential in order for a producer of low volume, long life products to effectively manage obsolescence in their product line. In this paper, the obsolescence management strategies are reviewed to identify best practices and recommendations that can improve a company’s ability to deal with obsolescence, sometimes called DMSMS (Diminishing manufacturing sources and material shortages), though the terms are not strictly interchangeable. This is achieved not only through a comprehensive literature review but also through a series of case studies from different companies. These validate findings from literature and provide a realistic perspective on the challenge to manage obsolescence, during the product development lifecycle.

Developing a product that could save money for greenhouse crop growers and meet the high performance standards established by the company was the challenge. Product, market, pricing, distribution, and communication issues and strategies were considered in the product development. In 10 years, this new product line became the company's best-selling product line.
