What matters in the relationship between mentoring and job-related stress? The moderating effects of protégés’ traditionality and trust in mentor

AbstractMentoring received by protégés has been shown to play an important role in relieving protégés’ job-related stress. However, literature on the relationship between mentoring and job-related stress has yielded mixed and inconclusive results. Our research seeks to reconcile the conflicting implications by examining protégés’ individual traditionality and trust in mentor as moderators on the relationship between mentoring and job-related stress. We tested the hypotheses with data from a sample of 210 protégés from a large company in China. Results of our two-way and three-way interaction effect tests revealed that: (1) traditionality moderated the negative relationship between mentoring and job-related stress in such a way that the relationship was stronger for protégés with higher rather than lower traditionality; (2) the influence that mentoring had on job-related stress was strongest for protégés with both high traditionality and a high level of trust in mentor.

The main target of this research study is to dig-out the impact of biometric attendance on teachers’ performance at Hazara University. A self-administered structured questionnaire is developed for data collection. A sample of 150 employees are chosen from the targeted population through stratified random sampling. The collected data is collated, coded, and punched in the SPSS for descriptive and inferential analysis. The results point out that 67% of those informants are male, while 33% are females. The highest number, 58% of employees are in Grade-18, and only 5% employees are in Grade-21. Further, it shows that 88% participants are agreed to the installation of biometric attendance system. However, 87% respondents agreed that biometric system ensures teachers attendance on time. Moreover, correlation analysis results indicate that biometric system has a strong positive significant relationship with employees’ attendance and employees’ performance. But it has a significant negative relationship with job-related stress. Alongside, by independent sample T-test, gender differences are found that females are more in job-related stress than male due to the biometric system. The study concludes that biometric system has a high-level significant influence on the teachers’ attendance schedule and their performance. Further, the study recommends the application of biometric attendance system in academia, it will, in turn, improve and ensure the performance level of employees.

Abstract This study aimed to determine the frequency of work-related musculoskeletal discomforts (WMSDs) observed in veterinarians and the risk factors that may bring about these. Two hundred and seven veterinarians working in three provinces in south west Turkey were included in the study. The demographic and occupational information on the participants was recorded. The Modified Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was used to evaluate the musculoskeletal problems of different body parts, which cause difficulties at work and result in staying away from work. 49.8 % of veterinarians mostly have problems with lower back, 41.1 % with back, and 39.1 % with neck. The frequency of WMSDs tends to increase with the progress of professional experience. Three work-related activities during which veterinarians experience most difficulties while at work are obstetric procedures (28 %), vaccination (25.6 %), and driving (23.2 %). It is statistically significant that arm problems are observed more in veterinarians working with large animal types (p<0.05). The high level of job related stress and low job satisfaction statistically significantly affect the formation of WMSDs (p<0.05). The study showed that a large number of veterinarians experienced work-related musculoskeletal pain and discomforts that could be caused by some physical and psychosocial risk factors. Therefore, it is recommended for veterinarians to receive education on ergonomics and exercise from the beginning of their professional lives to prevent WMSDs.

A growing number of young people tend to regard their pets as their surrogate children, yet research examining the relationship between pet attachment and fertility intention remains scarce. Moreover, individuals’ fertility intention is affected by economic resources. Therefore, we conducted two studies to examine the interaction effect of pet attachment and subjective socioeconomic status (SES) on childbearing-aged individuals’ fertility intention. In Study 1, we utilized questionnaires to measure Chinese pet owners’ pet attachment, subjective SES, and fertility intention. In Study 2, participants’ pet attachment was experimentally manipulated by reading articles about the benefits of petkeeping. The results of the two studies consistently demonstrated that the effect of pet attachment on fertility intention was moderated by subjective SES. Specifically, pet attachment was negatively associated with fertility intention when individuals had a high level of subjective SES, whereas this effect disappeared when individuals had low subjective SES. These findings suggest an explanation for why individuals with high subjective SES delay or even opt out of childbearing. The limitations and implications of the current study are discussed.

A survey developed by Optum research revealed that o f the Mid Western teachers who were surveyed four out of ten teachers experience at least a high level of job stress. <p><em>The deleterious effects of teacher burnout (academic-related stress) on academic outcomes have been previously established. However, teacher burnout’s relationship with self</em><em>-</em><em>regulated strategies as well as underlying factors contributing to their potential relationship </em><em>is</em><em> less understood. Consequently,</em><em> the present study examined the link between Iranian EFL teachers’ self-regulation and burnout at Kerman English language institutes. For this aim, a total of 101 English language teachers teaching in fifteen language institutes in Kerman took part in this study. The research participant selection was according to the convenience sampling. They completed two questionnaires: Teachers’ Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ) designed by Yesim et al. (2009), based on the model proposed by Zimmerman’s self-regulation (2000), and Teachers’ Burnout Questionnaire (TBQ) extracted from Pines et al. (1981) Burnout Scale. This study was a quantitative correlation survey of issue in which the relationship between predictor variable (self-regulation) and criterion variable (burnout) was analyzed. The findings yielded via correlation analysis documented that there was a significant negative relationship between applying self-regulated strategies and burnout. Subsequent data analyses showed that among the components of self-regulated strategies, goal setting was the best predictor of burnout. </em><em>It means that EFL teachers who establish goals for their teaching and attempt to accomplish them will be rarely at the risk of burnout.</em><em> </em><em></em></p><em></em>

Medical professionals experience more work-related stress than other specialties, furthermore, many results of different researches have shown that the level of stress continues to grow. When stress persists, it becomes chronic and negatively affects a person’s physical and mental health. Work-related stress is associated not only with burnout, exhaustion, but also with increased morbidity, chronic diseases and especially with cardiovascular disorders. The aim of our research was to determine the relationship between work-related stress, burnout and aerobic capacity among physiotherapists. The research included 30 participants, who completed two questionnaires about stress and burnout and performed two tests for aerobic capacity evaluation. 80 percent of physiotherapists were experiencing low, medium or high level stress. Burnout was found in 23 percent of participants. 64 percent of subjects’ aerobic capacity was evaluated as average and 16 percent of subjects had poor and very poor aerobic capacity. 20 percent of the participants’ tonus of sympathetic part of autonomic nervous system was normal and they were considered healthy, but not physically trained. After statistical analysis there was no statistically significant relationship found between physiotherapists’ stress or burnout and aerobic capacity.

Church ministers often face the challenges of multiple, conflicting, and ambiguous roles, thus incurring job-related stress based upon the expectations of others and individual personality dynamics. Following the procedures utilized by L. J. Francis and R. Rodger (1994), the relationship of perceived role conflict and personality dynamics was investigated in 930 British Pentecostal ministers. These clergy completed a demographic survey, the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (H. J. Eysenck & S. B. G. Eysenck, 1975), and the prioritization of 20 ministerial roles in terms of personal values and the perceived expectations of others. The results of this study indicate that ministers who endorse traits associated with neuroticism tend to experience role conflict more than those endorsing other personality profiles.

The main goal of this study is to examine the relationship between teachers’ thinking styles and girl students’ Spiritual Intelligence (SI) in Tehran’s high schools. The population included all 155859 students and 12571 teachers in Tehran’s girl high schools. According to “Morgan table” 384 students and 375 teachers were selected using cluster random sampling method. Research tools were two standardized questionnaires: Emren & Demir’s (2007) Spiritual Intelligence Questionnaire and Sternberg’s thinking style inventory. Their validity indexes were evaluated by Mehrjou (2009). The reliability of the instruments was also calculated using Alpha Cronbach as 0.89 and 0.81 respectively. The research results revealed that teachers used a high level of executive and legislative thinking styles and a medium use of judicial style. There was also a negative relationship between executive style and problem solving. There was no meaningful relationship between executive thinking style and self-awareness consciousness, being holistic and grace. A negative relationship between legislative style and grace was also observed. However, there wasn’t a meaningful relation between this thinking style and problem solving. However, no positive relationship between this thinking style and grace was observed.   Keywords - thinking styles, executive, legislative, judicial thinking, spiritual intelligence

The purpose of this quantitative field study is to examine the relationship between perceived leader narcissism and employee proactive behavior, incorporating leader–member exchange (LMX) quality and leader identification as moderators. Within the social identity theory framework, implicit leadership and social categorization theories are used as the underpinning basis for our hypothesized three-way interaction moderation model. The research sample consisted of 90 groups (including 326 employees and 90 leaders) from different companies in China. Results indicate that there is a three-way interaction effect between perceived leader narcissism, LMX quality, and leader identification, which negatively influences employee proactive behavior. Specifically, when LMX quality and leader identification are both at a high level, the negative relationship between perceived leader narcissism and employee proactive behavior is most salient. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
