Preliminary results from a deep R, I and Z band survey of ~ 6 square degrees of the Taurus Dark Cloud region are presented. 186 potential brown dwarfs have been unearthed, with seven having follow-up spectroscopic data. The spectra reveal three mid/late-type M dwarfs, of which two show weak Hα emission. If these objects are members of the TDC region, theoretical models suggest masses in the range 10 – 20 MJ.

In a recent survey for faint red stars from a digital stack of Schmidt plates a number of candidate objects were identified. Parallax’s for three of these objects have been reported showing them to have luminosities which interpreted within the available evolutionary models indicate them to be good brown dwarf candidates. Here we examine spectra of these objects and others from the plate stack. Using standard spectral indices we find that for a given spectral type their spectra are more consistent with the Pleiades brown dwarfs (PPL 15, Teide 1 and Calar 3) than with standard late-type M dwarfs. Our interpretation is that this is due to their selection by RF IN colours which at values > 3 preferentially selects objects with relatively low gravities. For late-type M dwarfs and brown dwarfs low gravities are expected to be a reliable indication of youth. We also notice that the stack objects generally have strong FeH absorption for their spectral type. Current model atmospheres suggest that FeH strongly increases in strength toward lower metallicities and lower temperatures. We believe that this is not consistent with the available observational evidence from late-type M dwarfs. It is possible that solid Fe is forming inthe low temperature atmospheres relatively depleting FeH strengths toward lower temperatures. We find some evidence that for dwarfs at low temperatures dust formation is less prevalent in lower gravity objects suggesting that dwarfs at low temperatures stronger FeH may be an indication of youth. In addition to the spectral evidence the three stack objects whose parallax’s have been measured show small tangential velocities which is a further indication of youth.

AbstractWe present and discuss the Hα (λ = 6563Å) observations of the contact (W UMa type) binaries AE Phoenicis and YY Eridani, obtained in 1989, 1990 and 1995 with the CAT/CES telescope of the Southern European Observatory (ESO). In particular, we compare the intrinsic equivalent widths of both components with the NextGen theoretical models and the saturation limit. We find that the average Hα equivalent widths are close to the saturation border and that the primary components have excess Hα-emission, indicating enhanced chromospheric activity. This is compatible with both theoretical and observational suggestions that the primary is the more magnetically active component and is filled with (mostly unresolvable) dark spots and associated chromospheric plages.

ABSTRACT We report the validation of a recently proposed infrared (IR) selection criterion for symbiotic stars (SySts). Spectroscopic data were obtained for seven candidates, selected from the SySt candidates of Akras et al. by employing the new supplementary IR selection criterion for SySts in the VST/OmegaCAM Photometric H-Alpha Survey. Five of them turned out to be genuine SySts after the detection of H α, He ii, and [O iii] emission lines as well as TiO molecular bands. The characteristic O vi Raman-scattered line is also detected in one of these SySts. According to their IR colours and optical spectra, all five newly discovered SySts are classified as S-type. The high rate of true SySts detections of this work demonstrates that the combination of the H α emission and the new IR criterion improves the selection of target lists for follow-up observations by minimizing the number of contaminants and optimizing the observing time.

ABSTRACT We present the results of our BVR-band photometric and R-band polarimetric observations of ∼40 stars in the periphery of the dark cloud CB54. From different photometric data, we estimate E(B − V) and E(J − H). After involving data from other sources, we discuss the extinction variations towards CB54. We reveal two main dust layers: a foreground, E(B − V) ≈ 0.1 mag, at ∼200 pc and an extended layer, $E(B-V) \gtrsim 0.3$ mag, at ∼1.5 kpc. CB54 belongs to the latter. Based on these results, we consider the reason for the random polarization map that we have observed for CB54. We find that the foreground is characterized by low polarization ($P \lesssim 0.5$ per cent) and a magnetic field parallel to the Galactic plane. The extended layer shows high polarization (P up to 5–7 per cent). We suggest that the field in this layer is nearly perpendicular to the Galactic plane and both layers are essentially inhomogeneous. This allows us to explain the randomness of polarization vectors around CB54 generally. The data – primarily observed by us in this work for CB54, by A. K. Sen and colleagues in previous works for three dark clouds CB3, CB25 and CB39, and by other authors for a region including the B1 cloud – are analysed to explore any correlation between polarization, the near-infrared, E(J − H), and optical, E(B − V), excesses, and the distance to the background stars. If polarization and extinction are caused by the same set of dust particles, we should expect good correlations. However, we find that, for all the clouds, the correlations are not strong.

ABSTRACT We present spectroscopic confirmation of three new two-image gravitationally lensed quasars, compiled from existing strong lens and X-ray catalogues. Images of HSC J091843.27–022007.5 show a red galaxy with two blue point sources at either side, separated by 2.26 arcsec. This system has a source and a lens redshifts zs = 0.804 and zℓ = 0.459, respectively, as obtained by our follow-up spectroscopic data. CXCO J100201.50+020330.0 shows two point sources separated by 0.85 arcsec on either side of an early-type galaxy. The follow-up spectroscopic data confirm the fainter quasar has the same redshift with the brighter quasar from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) fiber spectrum at zs = 2.016. The deflecting foreground galaxy is a typical early-type galaxy at a redshift of zℓ = 0.439. SDSS J135944.21+012809.8 has two point sources with quasar spectra at the same redshift zs = 1.096, separated by 1.05 arcsec, and fits to the HSC images confirm the presence of a galaxy between these. These discoveries demonstrate the power of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP)’s deep imaging and wide sky coverage. Combined with existing X-ray source catalogues and follow-up spectroscopy, the HSC-SSP provides us unique opportunities to find multiple-image quasars lensed by a foreground galaxy.

Spectra of M dwarfs are rich in atomic and molecular lines. These spectra provide such basic information as Teff (or radius), log g (or mass), surface chemical composition, and something more (e.g. activity) if properly interpreted. It is recognized, however, that spectra of M dwarfs are already dimmed by the dust formed in their photospheres (Tsuji et al. 1996a) and this effect, which has been overlooked until recently, should be taken into account in any interpretation and analysis of the spectra of very low mass objects (VLMOs) including late M dwarfs and brown dwarfs.

AbstractWe present the results of two three-year surveys of young and nearby stars to search for wide orbit giant planets. On the one hand, we focus on early-type and massive, namely β Pictoris analogs. On the other hand, we observe late type and very low mass stars, i.e., M dwarfs. We report individual detections of new planetary mass objects. According to our deep detection performances, we derive the observed frequency of giant planets between these two classes of parent stars. We find frequency between 6 to 12% but we are not able to assess a/no correlation with the host-mass.

The line profiles of dense cores in infrared-dark clouds indicate the presence of young stellar objects (YSOs), but the youth of the YSOs and the large distances to the clouds make it difficult to distinguish the outflows that normally accompany star formation from turbulence within the cloud. We report here the first unambiguous identification of a bipolar outflow from a young stellar object (YSO) in an infrared-dark cloud, using observations of SiO to distinguish the relatively small amounts of gas in the outflow from the rest of the ambient cloud. This article examines drug adherence in relation to changing patterns of medical pluralism and neoliberal reforms among psychiatric patients in postreform Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We conducted 39 in-depth interviews and 21 follow-up interviews with individuals prescribed psychiatric medication on an outpatient basis in 2016 to identify patterns of nonadherence, which was operationalized as taking medications according to doctors’ prescriptions at the three-month follow-up interval. Patients adapt or reject their medication prescriptions due to (1) concerns about biomedical drugs and adverse drug reactions, (2) local concepts of psychic distress and selfhood, and (3) the social context of medicine taking. The dominant theoretical models of drug adherence focus on individual-level predictors. However, situating drug adherence in its political-economic context highlights the relationship between medicine and neoliberal modernity that underlies adherence. Examining the intersection of multiple medication regimens and political regimes, we argue that nonadherence is rooted in a complex layering of medical traditions and modernist projects of the self. The reception of new biomedical drugs in Vietnam is shaped by not only folk theories of illness but also a changing cultural politics of the self.

A rich chemistry exists within dark clouds. In the most chemically studied dark cloud, Taurus molecular cloud one (TMC-l), more than 40 molecules have been detected. In this paper I look at the current isochoric, i.e. constant density, isothermal time-dependent gas-phase chemical models of dark clouds such as TMC-l and very briefly outline the present understanding of the chemistry of these objects. The above chemical models agree very well with the observed abundances of almost all chemical species at times earlier than steady state, i.e. earlier than thirty million years. However, the models are fraught with uncertainty and are not physically realistic representations of the full dynamical evolution of dark clouds from a more diffuse state. Nevertheless the agreement with observation is striking.
