Designed for a literate, hearing clientele, traditional CALL tools do not necessarily meet the needs of deaf people, and are not adapted to their learning styles, especially in the area of literacy. Current developments lead us to believe that, in order for deaf people to subscribe to literacy campaigns and to ensure that such measures are efficient, two conditions must be met: Quebec Sign Language must be the language of instruction (Dubuisson et al., 1997) and the participation of deaf people must be felt at every stage of the development of course material. Research has shown that in architecture, for example, the participation of the target clientele in the design process of the product can lead to the emergence of significant solutions (Vezeau et al., 1999). In light of the quantity of Web systems and products that are hardly used or difficult to use, Rubin (1994) reminds us of the need to consider the user, and not only the machine or the system, in the development process. The main goal of our research is to establish design parameters (developmental process, type of software, and content) for CALL software aimed at deaf adults. Only the data relating to the developmental process will be presented here. We will analyze and discuss the responses obtained through interviews with deaf members of the development team, audiotapes (on which an interpreter recorded the words of the team members), and videotapes of meetings. The interpretation of this data will give way to a qualitative assessment of the efficiency of the approach in the development of material adapted to the needs of the target population.

The question of the possible impact of deafness on temporal processing remains unanswered. Different findings, based on behavioral measures, show contradictory results. The goal of the present study is to analyze the brain activity underlying time estimation by using functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) techniques, which allow examination of the frontal, central and occipital cortical areas. A total of 37 participants (19 deaf) were recruited. The experimental task involved processing a road scene to determine whether the driver had time to safely execute a driving task, such as overtaking. The road scenes were presented in animated format, or in sequences of 3 static images showing the beginning, mid-point, and end of a situation. The latter presentation required a clocking mechanism to estimate the time between the samples to evaluate vehicle speed. The results show greater frontal region activity in deaf people, which suggests that more cognitive effort is needed to process these scenes. The central region, which is involved in clocking according to several studies, is particularly activated by the static presentation in deaf people during the estimation of time lapses. Exploration of the occipital region yielded no conclusive results. Our results on the frontal and central regions encourage further study of the neural basis of time processing and its links with auditory capacity.

The purpose of the article is to substantiate the possibility of forming professional competencies of project management among state and municipal employees in the system of additional education through their participation in project activities. The introduction of the proposed project management technologies allows officials at all levels to develop new professional competencies that would allow them to create a unique product in conditions of limited resources. The methodological basis of the study was a systematic approach, within which we used structural and functional analysis, general scientific methods: comparison, description, explanation, abstraction. In addition, we used included observation when the authors of the article performed the functions of moderators of project groups. As a result, the expediency of project training of state and municipal employees within the framework of the system of additional education was substantiated, where the reporting form of mastering the course material is the presentation of one's own real project, demonstrating the possession of project team members with professional competencies in the field of project planning. management.

The purpose of this work is to analyze the coefficient of hydraulic resistance in the separator of a direct-flow control valve with a rotary lock according to the approximation of the superposition of pressure losses in elementary local resistances. In contrast to the known methods of constructing simulation models, the proposed analytical method of calculation is based on a qualitative assessment of the specified coefficient in the implementation of throttling of fluid flows in the “separator-rotary lock” unit, depending on the design and operating parameters of the process. It was found that, within the selected range of variation of the separator parameters, an increase in the valve opening degree from 20% to 50% leads to a decrease in the hydraulic resistance coefficient by 19.6 times, and an increase in this degree from 20% to 100% is associated with a 42.4-fold decrease in the studied characteristic. This circumstance justifies the effectiveness of the proposed method for throttling the flows of the working medium. The results obtained are used to study the influence of the main design parameters of the “separator-butterfly valve” unit on the flow capacity of the control valve and are relevant for stochastic modeling of the hydrodynamic cavitation process.

What does it mean to be in a strong partnership? Using Collaboratory’s national dataset of community engagement data, we explored partnerships between higher education institutions and the community organizations with which they are partnered. Our goals were to 1- understand what quantitative characteristics from Collaboratory denote ‘strong’ community-university partnerships, 2- use those characteristics to create an algorithmic assessment model to identify the strongest partnerships in the Collaboratory dataset, and 3- reveal common themes that practitioners can leverage to cultivate stronger and more resilient partnerships. With input from Collaboratory administrators, community engagement professionals, and institutional research team members, we identified four quantitative data points in Collaboratory data that we combined into a partnership strength model. The model identified 99 out of 2,083 community-university partnerships that might be classified as high-strength. The model’s results represent an initial jumping-off point for future research, including qualitative assessment of the 99 strongest partnerships to validate the model. Additionally, we argue that quantitative assessment of qualitative partnerships is by no means a silver bullet, but instead represents a pragmatic method of high-level assessment and quick filtering of large datasets of qualitative partnership data that would otherwise be prohibitively time-consuming.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh utilitas multimedia dan gaya belajar siswa terhadap prestasi belajar siswa pada IPS terpadu. Data dikumpulkan melalui survei beberapa bulan ke Sekolah Menengah Umum SMP Negeri 13 Mataram. Melibatkan 108 siswa telah dipilih secara sistematis dari populasi target 240 siswa baik mereka yang gaya belajar visual atau pendengaran yang dipilih dengan cermat. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes prestasi belajar dan dianalisis secara statistik dengan menerapkan serangkaian perhitungan Anova. Penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa penggunaan multimedia secara efektif meningkatkan prestasi belajar siswa untuk kedua gaya belajar. Di sisi lain, penggunaan media konvensional tidak membawa dampak signifikan terhadap prestasi belajar siswa baik pada gaya belajar visual maupun auditori. Akhirnya, disarankan kepada para guru terutama untuk memberikan banyak perhatian pada pemanfaatan multimedia dalam pengajaran terutama dalam pengajaran ilmu sosial. Demikian pula, disarankan kepada guru untuk mempertimbangkan gaya belajar siswa. The research was aimed at finding out the effect of the utilities of multimedia and the students learning styles towards the students’ learning achievement on socil science. The data were collected through a couple of month surveys to the Public Secondary Schools of SMP Negeri 13 Mataram. Involving 108 students had been sistematically selected from the target population of 240 students either those who visual or auditory learning styles which was selected carefully. The data were collected through learning achievement test and analized statistically by applying a series of Anova computations. Research reveals that the use of multimedia was effectively improving the students’ learning ahievement for both styles of learning. On the other hand, the use of convensional media was not brought with it any significant effect to the students’ learning achievement either on visual nor auditory learning styles. Finally, it is suggested to the teachers especially in order to pay much attention to the utilization of multimedia in teaching especially in teaching social science. Similarly, it was also suggested to the teachers in order to take into account the students’ learning styles.

The evaluation was carried out to examine the distribution of learning styles (discussed in Chapter 2) of the third year undergraduate engineering students and suggest effective problem solving approaches that could increase the motivation and understanding of slow learners at UNITEN. For this study, a sample target population of 60 third year undergraduate engineering students who had taken the Engineering Mechanics subject was tested. These students were selected based on their second year grade point average (GPA) of less than 2.5 as this study emphasizes on slow learners.

Educational intervention for deaf people has a long history but it is a history that is dominated by the notion of deficit. The growing trend in the literature on deaf people is to recognise that they are not deficient but form a cultural and linguistic minority group that deserves appropriate educational programs. Deaf people report great frustration with their experiences of schooling as they have invariably been treated as intellectually inferior. Yet, a significant number of deaf people are gifted and have had the double hurdle of overcoming their deafness in a hearing world and an education service that does not meet their needs. This paper explores the educational experiences of gifted deaf people in a preliminary attempt to develop appropriate identification measures and educational provisions for such individuals. The conclusions presented are based on extensive interviews with a number of gifted deaf adults. Deaf interviewers were utilised to collect the required data in a more culturally sensitive and relevant manner.
