Hypothesis: First responder organizations with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) can have a larger impact on survival of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest than placing AEDs in large buildings.Methods: To evaluate the impact, all cardiac arrests handled by a large urban fire department for 1994 were analyzed. Each 5.6 square mile area of the city was defined as business (Bus), high (HilRes), middle (MilRes), or low income (LoIRes) residential. For each area, the CPR rates were calculated for the number of arrests/100 ambulance dispatches, and were stratified by percent of adults over age 65.Results: Of the 1,222 cardiac arrests, only 85 occurred in business and industrial areas, 1,041 occurred in residential areas. The downtown business district had only 77 arrests with half of those being outside of buildings or in shelters.

Historic centers have become first-line tourist destinations. In order to achieve sustainable development, it is essential to get to know the opinions of the host community on the impact of tourism, the positives, as well as the negatives. This paper aims to understand the residents’ opinions and perceptions of destinations as the historic cities. This research looks into the residents’ opinions on the impact of tourism in the historic city of Toledo, Spain. The results of a quantitative survey among 442 residents in the city of Toledo are presented. The study is a revision of the literature and analysis and explanation of an empiric study’s results. Descriptive statistics have been used, as well as factor analysis and non-parametric tests to analyze data. The main results point out that residents have a positive vision of tourism development, rather than negative. The economic importance of tourism and its ability to create jobs stand out. However, they also think that the historic center is being turned into a museum for tourists. Analyzing their opinions according to certain demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, some major differences come up, such as that the inhabitants of residential areas have a more positive opinion than those who live in the historic center. Understanding the perspective of the residents can help the managers and planners of the tourism in the city to play down the potential negative impact of tourism and to achieve support from the host community in regards to tourism.

Itroduction: Previous research has quantified the impact of EMS response time on the probability of survival from OHCA, but the impact on different subpopulations is currently unknown. Aim: To investigate how response time affects OHCA survival for different patient subpopulations. Methods: We conducted a logistic regression analysis on non-EMS witnessed OHCAs of presumed cardiac etiology from the Toronto Regional RescuNet between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2016. We predicted survival using age, sex, public location, presenting rhythm, bystander witnessed, bystander resuscitation, and response time, defined as the time interval from 911 call to EMS arrival at the patient. We conducted subgroup analyses to quantify the effect of response time on survival for eight different subpopulations: public, private, bystander resuscitation, no bystander resuscitation, patients ≥65, patients <65, witnessed, and unwitnessed OHCA. We also quantified the effect of response time on survival for pairwise intersections of the subpopulations. We compared our results to Valenzuela et al. (1997), which suggests survival odds decrease by 10% for each minute delay in response time. Results: We identified 22,988 OHCAs. Overall, a one-minute delay in EMS response time was associated with a 13.2% reduction in the odds of survival. The reduction varied by subpopulation, ranging from a 7.2% reduction in survival odds for unwitnessed arrests to a 16.4% reduction in survival odds for arrests with bystander resuscitation. Response time had the largest impact on survival for the subpopulation of OHCAs that were both witnessed and received bystander resuscitation (17.4% reduction in survival odds). Conclusion: The effect of a one-minute delay in EMS response on the odds of survival from OHCA can be as low as a 7.2% reduction and as high as a 17.4% reduction. This variability contrasts with the currently accepted 10% rule that is assumed across the entire population.

The port area is a diverse business district, both industry and other activities. Even though it is positioned far from residential areas, the impact of its activities indirectly still reaches the surrounding community. The environmental conditions of the port area need to be controlled routinely so that their management does not violate applicable regulations. Environmental management is needed so that risks arising from all activities can be controlled. Panjang Port as one of the well-developed fuel storage terminals as part of the Pelindo II region. This study has been designed to assess air quality and seawater quality around Panjang Port, Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. Several air quality parameters and marine water quality parameters were monitored from 2011 to 2013. The air quality sampling conducted in the fuel storage tank area and chemicals as well as supporting facilities. The air quality parameters are SO2, NO2, O3, CO, H2S, and dust. The results of data analysis showed several air quality parameters such as SO2, NO2, O3, dust, H2S, and NH3 are below the threshold of minimum quality standard. Only the CO parameter tends to increase semester to semester. The seawater quality parameters include physical, chemical, and biological quality. Almost the physical quality parameters are below the quality standard, thus the chemical quality too, except the pH and TSS tends to higher than a quality standard. In general, these studies on air quality and seawater quality at the Panjang Port have been carried out well and the results show that the environmental conditions for the Panjang Port area are still quite good, only it is recommended to add a green area around the site.

W wielu obszarach miejskich widoczna jest skrajna segregacja przestrzeni publicznej oraz fakt, że wiele dzielnic mieszkaniowych jest przestrzennie odizolowanych od miasta jako całości. Ponieważ tradycyjne metody analiz urbanistycznych dają słabe wytyczne w tym kontekście, podjęta zostanie próba ujęcia problemu i odmiennego podejścia do segregacji w projektowaniu urbanistycznym. Niniejszy artykuł bada, w jaki sposób teorie i metody analizy Space Syntax mogą przyczynić się do stworzenia bardziej dopracowanych opisów relacji przestrzennych w różnych dzielnicach i całym mieście. Przyjęto metodę badawczą: analizę literatury fachowej (krajowej i zagranicznej) oraz dostępnych publikacji. Analiza urbanistyczna oparta na teorii Space Syntax umożliwia wykazanie zasadniczych różnic strukturalnych między dzielnicami i określenie wpływu form urbanistycznych na zalety przestrzenne różnych obszarów miasta. Otwiera to nowe możliwości rozwiązania problemu segregacji w zakresie projektowania urbanistycznego oraz sformułowanie bardziej skutecznych interwencji antysegregacyjnych. Space Syntax analysis in the Face of the Phenomenon of Social Segregation and Spatial Isolation of Residential Areas In many urban areas there is an observable extreme segregation of public space, in addition to the fact that many housing districts are spatially isolated from the city as a whole. As traditional methods of urban analysis provide poor guidelines in this context, an attempt to investigate this problem and present a different approach to segregation in urban design was made. This paper presents an investigation about how Space Syntax theories and methods can contribute to creating more detailed descriptions of spatial relationships in different districts and in the entire city. The research method employed was an analysis of the literature (both domestic and trade). Space-Syntax-based urban analysis enables demonstrating significant structural differences between districts and to determine the impact of urban forms on the spatial advantages of different areas of the city. It provides new opportunities to address segregation in urban design and formulate more effective anti-segregation interventions.

Looking at evolving urban governance and planning practices in the city of Lahore, Pakistan, the article aims to understand—from an Evolutionary Governance Theory perspective—to what extent these practices steer paths and modes of service provision and housing for low-income residents. With a focus on the endurance and transformations of urban governance practices and institutions, we first explore the influence of the changing development discourse and the impact it has had on the (re)configuration of urban governance and housing policies in Lahore. Second, drawing on extensive fieldwork and empirical data collected between 2012 and 2016, we highlight three vignettes depicting the development of different housing options for low-income residents in Lahore, i.e., a government-steered subsidised housing scheme, a privately developed ‘pro-poor’ settlement in the peri-urban fringe of the city, and residential colonies already—or in the process of being—regularised. By analysing the relationship between governance frameworks, the establishment of the three types of settlements and how residents manage to access housing and services there, we demonstrate how purposive deregulation in governance and policy generates a disconnect between urban normative frameworks (i.e., urban planning tools and pro-poor housing policies) and residents’ needs and everyday practices. We argue that this highly political process is not exclusively path-dependent but has also allowed the creation of liminal spaces based on agency and collective action strategies of low-income residents.

The effect of noises toward human body not only disturb the hearing organs, it can also disturb other human body parts and in some cases may results in reduction of work’s efficiency. This study aims to assess the noise level in residential areas on the edge of the city of Yogyakarta highway and to find any indication of the impact on building design and barriers by homeowners to reduce noise. This research is quantitative associative. Data obtained from measurements and field observations. The results showed that the noise level in residential areas on the edge of the highway, class II street and local roads in the city of Yogyakarta did not meet the standard values of LTNI and LNP. The design of buildings and barriers as a noise reduction factors for the highway was found with a percentage of 100% on the Jalan Bung Tarjo segment, 85.7% on the Jalan Ki Penjawi segment, 20.83% on the Jalan Juminahan segment, 52.08% on the Jalan Bausasran segment, 13.37% on the Jalan Suryodiningratan segment, and 10.7% on the Jalan Mangkuyudan segment. Therefore, the people of Yogyakarta are not fully aware of the high level of road noise.

AbstractEarly defibrillation improves survival for patients suffering cardiac arrest from ventricular fibrillation (VF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT). Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) should be placed in locations in which there is a high incidence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OOHCA). The study objective was to identify high-risk, rural locations that might benefit from AED placement. A retrospective review of OOHCA in a rural community during the past 5.5 years was conducted. The OOHCAs that occurred in non-residential areas were categorized based on location. Nine hundred, forty OOHCAs occurred during the study period of which 265 (28.2%) happened in non-residential areas. Of these, 127 (47.9%) occurred in healthcare-related locations, including 104 (39.2%) in extended care facilities. No location used in this study had more than two OOHCAs. Most (52.1%) non-residential OOHCAs occurred as isolated events in 146 different locations. Almost half of the OOHCAs that occurred in non-residential areas took place in healthcare-related facilities suggesting that patients at these locations may benefit from AED placement. First responders with AEDs are likely to have the greatest impact in a rural community.

The center of activities of Santiago de Chile has been continuously evolving towards the eastern part of the city, where the most affluent residents live. This paper characterizes the direction and magnitude of this evolution through an indicator stating how much the built surface area for service purposes grows in different areas in the city. To identify the impact of this evolution, we compare residents’ travel-time distributions from different sectors in the city to the central area. This travel-time comparison is focused on the sectors where informal settlements were massively eradicated between 1978–1985 and those areas where the settlements were relocated. This analysis show that this policy and the consequent evolution of the city were detrimental to the affected families, significantly increasing average travel time to the extended center of the city and inequality among different socioeconomic groups in the city. Although the phenomenon is quite visible to everyone, it has not received any policy reaction from the authority. These findings suggest that middle and low-income sectors would benefit if policies driving the evolution of the center of activities towards them were implemented.

A survey of over 200 households in Vancouver was conducted to determine stored quantities and generation characteristics of household hazardous wastes (HHW). Respondents were also asked to identify their preferences and concerns regarding the design of a collection program for these wastes. The results were used to estimate the quantities of HHW disposed of annually, and the quantities and profiles of wastes that could be received at a typical depot collection program in the City. Different operating parameters for both depot collection programs and household collection programs were compared and evaluated for effectiveness. Public willingness to participate in different collection programs was evaluated, and the collection needs of different residential areas were assessed. Several differences in waste generation and public willingness to participate were noted between areas of apartment dwellers and detached residence dwellers, and of high and low income levels. Recommendations were made to assist in the design of an effective HHW collection program for the City of Vancouver. Alternatives for the design of a collection program were developed. The population and economic growth increase the need of space leading to an increase in built-up area. There is an increased activity in the city centre which results in the residents feeling less comfortable to live in the area. Hence, the growth of the settlement area tends to head towards the periphery. This condition is an indication of the developments of the built-up area in the periphery. Urban sprawl is a phenomenon of development of an irregular built-up area which leads to the suburbs. Urban development as a result of urban sprawl will trigger an increase in the demand for supporting facilities and infrastructure. An urban Sprawl in Semarang City has resulted in the establishment of residential areas in a conserved region, which is against zoning regulations in the Semarang City Spatial Planning Document (RTRW). Urban Sprawl Typology Research in Semarang City aims to analyse the urban sprawl typology in the city. By knowing the typology, it can minimise the impact of urban sprawl. This research was conducted using the remote sensing method and geographic information system (GIS) with the Shannon's Entropy approach. The results indicated that in 2006 and 2016, urban sprawl in Semarang City had three types of typology that can be classified as typology I (low level), typology II (medium level) and typology III (high level). The impact of urban sprawl on typology II and III can be minimised through the provision of affordable housing with adequate infrastructure, and an improvement in the permit system for housing and settlement development.
