An estimate of the leucine requirement for young pigs

AbstractThree pig trials were done to estimate an objective requirement of young (10 to 20 kg) pigs for leucine (Leu). Within each trial, four or five replicates of five pigs were given ad libitum access to their experimental diet for a period of 21 (trial 1) or 19 days (trials 2 and 3). A Leu-deficient diet (177 g crude protein per kg) based on maize, peanut meal, lactose, sucrose, dried whey, maize starch, soya-bean meal (SBM), and gelatin was used in these trials. Trial 1 showed that the Leu-deficient diet supplemented with Leu produced responses in weight gain and gain/food ratio that were similar (P > 0·10) to that obtained from a maize-SBM-whey positive-control diet containing 213 g crude protein (CP) per kg. Trials 2 and 3 utilized graded levels of crystalline L-Leu to determine the minimal Leu requirement in young pigs. Both trials showed linear increases (P < 0·05) in weight gain and gain/food as a result of Leu supplementation. Closer examination of the data revealed no significant change in gain/food or PUN responses above 11·2 g/kg total Leu in trial 2, or in weight gain or PUN values above 11·5 g/kg total Leu in trial 3. These data indicate that the Leu requirement of young pigs is probably not greater than 11·5 g/kg (10·5 g/kg true digestible), which equates to approximately 0·72 g true digestible Leu per MJ metabolizable energy. The ideal ratio of Leu to Lys appears to be close to 1: 1 for pigs in the weight range of 10 to 20 kg.

The growth performance of catfish Clarias gariepinus using imported feeds and locally made feeds of the same crude protein were compared. C. gariepinus (mean weight 12.8g) juvenile were reared in cages for a period of 12 weeks on different feed. Two imported feeds (skretting and copens) were purchased and two local feeds (corresponding to treatment) were compounded to contain the same level of crude protein. Locally ingredients used are maize, fish meal, groundnut cake, soya bean meal, bone meal, lysine, methionine, premix, vegetable oil, salt but varying fish meal and soya bean meal as follows, treatment 1- (11.38% to 7.5%), treatment 2-(7.5% to 11.38%) respectively. The pelleted feeds were fed at the rate of 5% of the fish biomass. The growth response was assessed in terms of daily weight gain, relative weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, mortality and survival rate. The results showed that the two local feeds promoted positive growth, implying that the use of different levels fish meal and soya bean meal (11.38% and 7.5%) favoured culture of juvenile C. gariepinus.Key Words, Clarias gariepinus, diet, fish feed, formulation, growth

ABSTRACTFifty-one ewes with single lambs and 87 ewes suckling twin lambs (mean ewe live weight, 67 kg) were given a basal diet of 1·0kg hay and 1·0kg whole oats, providing approximately 16·7MJ metabolizable energy and lOOg digestible crude protein per day. Three supplements (A, B and C), providing an additional 45 g digestible crude protein, were compared. Supplement A consisted of 40 g of a fully-soluble liquid product (LS) containing urea, (equivalent to 1090g crude protein per kg), minerals and vitamins; B was 16g urea with solid minerals and vitamins; and C was 125g soya bean meal given in substitution for the same amount of whole oats plus solid minerals and vitamins. The growth rate to 6 weeks for single lambs (11 kg) was unaffected by treatment. For twin lambs the growth rates were 7·5kg (LS), 7·1kg (crystalline urea), 7·8kg (soya) and 6·4k g (unsupplemented) (s.e. of mean = 0·31 kg). Ewes with twin lambs given crystalline urea or LS lost more live weight (approximately 1·04kg) than those given soya (6·6kg) over the first 6 weeks of lactation. The maintenance of normal concentrations of calcium and phosphorus in the blood of ewes suggested that the low total intakes of approximately 4·1 g calcium and 4·7 g phosphorus by the ewes were not inadequate.

AbstractTwo experiments involving 213 finishing lambs were carried out to examine the responses in growth rate and carcass composition to the addition ofmetabolizable energy (ME) to a mixed diet in theform ofeither grass silage concentrate. In the second experiment the performance of lambs offered silage only was also compared at equal intake with the performance of lambs given mixed diets. On average the silages contained 224 g dry matter (DM) per kg; 148 g crude protein (CP) per kg DM; 86 g ammonia-nitrogen per kg total nitrogen and 723 g digestible organic matter per kg DM. Concentrates were based on barley and soya-bean meal and contained 181 g CP per DM. Responses in carcass weight gain when additional ME was added to mixed silagelconcentrate diets in theform ofgrass silage and concentrates were 9·2 and 10·2 (s.e. 0·90) gIM] respectively in experiment 1 and 9·8 and 10-(s.e. 0·33) g/MJ respectively in experiment 2, and responses in energy retention in experiment 2 were 0·34 and 0-(s.e. 0·012) MJ/M] respectively. However carcass gain and energy retention sustained by a silage only diet were only 0·67 and 0·70 respectively of those sustained by a high-concentrate diet at the same ME intake. The diet did not significantly affect body or carcass composition.

SUMMARYTwo experiments were conducted with 84 male British Friesian calves to estimate their nitrogen and sulphur requirements between 5 and 11 weeks of age. A basal 12 % crude protein (CP) diet was supplemented with meat meal, soya bean meal or urea to 15 or 18 % CP, and with sulphur to reduce the nitrogen to sulphur ratios of the diets to about 10 to 1.The weight gains and feed conversion ratios of the calves given the 12% CP diets were significantly poorer than those of the calves fed on the diets containing 15 or 18% CP, irrespective of the CP supplement used. The supplementation of the urea-containing diets with sulphur caused a significant increase in feed intake and weight gain.The digestibility of nitrogen and dry matter increased with increasing CP content of the diets and was greater for the diets supplemented with urea than for those supplemented with meat meal or soya bean meal. Sulphur additions also increased the nitrogen digestibility. The retention of nitrogen, when corrected for feed intake, was greater in the calves fed on the diets containing 18% CP than in those fed on the 15% and 12% CP diets.The supplementation of the diets with sulphur increased the digestibility of sulphur, its excretion in urine and its retention. The concentration of urea in the blood plasma increased with increasing dietary CP content, and was higher in calves given urea.

To examine the association between phytase and xylanase in diets with nutritional adjustments on the metabolizability of feed by broiler diets, 250 chickens were used and distributed among five treatments and five replicates of 10 broilers each. The treatments were: positive control diet - without phytase or xylanase; negative control diet - with an energy reduction of 0.419 MJ/kg, without phytase or xylanase; and three diets containing xylanase and phytase and energy reductions of 0.209, 0.409 and 0.628 MJ/kg. For all energy-reduced diets, the nutritional matrix of phytase with phosphorus (0.15%), calcium (0.165%) and sodium (0.035%) was considered. The energy reduction of 0.628 MJ/kg with inclusion of the enzymes resulted in a higher metabolizability of the crude protein, also the apparent and apparent corrected metabolizable energy coefficients for nitrogen balance were higher in diets with a reduction energy of 0.209 MJ/kg, however had values similar to those obtained in the positive control diets and diets with energy reduction of 0.628 MJ/kg containing enzymes. The inclusion of phytase (500 FTU/kg) and xylanase (16,000 BXU/kg) in broiler diets, makes it possible to reduce metabolizable energy by up to 0.628 MJ/kg, available phosphorus, calcium, and sodium, and improve the metabolizability of the nutrients.

AbstractA 4 × 4 Latin square design experiment with 3-week experimental periods was conducted with four wether sheep, each fitted with a permanent rumen cannula, to evaluate the effects of dietary protein sources and levels on fermentation and microbial activity in the rumen. Four complete diets were offered each containing (g/kg dry matter (DM)) molasses 248, grass silage 200 and barley straw 260. The control diet (C) also contained barley and soya-bean meal and the other three diets were supplemented with urea (CU), soya-bean meal (CS), and soya-bean meal and fish meal (CSF), respectively. This gave foods of similar concentrations of metabolizable energy (ME) and estimated fermentable ME (10·6 and 9·8 MJ/kg DM, respectively), but different levels (g/kg DM) of estimated effective rumen degraded dietary protein (ERDP) and digestible undegraded protein (DUP) (ERDP/DUP, 84/17, 109/17, 116/38 and 119/54 for diets C, CU, CS and CSF, respectively).No clinical symptoms of ill health in the animals due to the feeding of molasses were observed during the experiment. The average pH values of rumen liquors obtained at various sampling times post feeding for diets C, CU, CS and CSF were 6·40, 6·49, 6·62 and 6·47 (s.e.d. 0·06 P < 0·05) respectively and average ammonia-nitrogen concentrations were 63, 81, 90 and 113 mg/l (s.e.d. 14·9, P < 0·02) respectively. The average concentrations of total volatile fatty acids in the rumen liquor were similar across the four treatments. The molar proportions of propionate and butyrate were higher for the diet C than for the other three diets (P < 0·05), while acetate was lower (P < 0·05). Supplementing with true protein (P < 0·05), but not with urea (P > 0·05), increased the molar proportions of isobutyrate and isovalerate. Whole tract apparent digestibilities of DM and organic matter did not differ significantly across the four treatments, but neutral-detergent fibre apparent digestibility (0·677, 0·672, 0·716 and 0·728 (s.e.d. 0·017) g/kg DM for diets C, CU, CS and CSF respectively) and the proportions of hay DM that disappeared in the rumen during 24 h incubation (0·223, 0·238, 0·284 and 0·271 (s.e.d. 0·019) g/kg DM) were significantly lower for diets C and CU than CS and CSF (P < 0·05). Urinary excretion of purine derivative nitrogen was similar across the four treatments. The results obtained from the present study indicate that there were no significant differences in the microbial crude protein synthesis in the rumen when a diet containing molasses was supplemented with urea or true protein. However, the supplementation of this control diet with true protein, but not with urea, did stimulate the degradation of hay DM in the rumen and the digestion of dietary fibre in the whole tract.

AbstractIn a feeding experiment β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), glucose, albumin, total protein, globulin and urea concentrations in the plasma of twin-bearing ewes were analysed. Mature Suffolk cross ewes were given either formic acid (FA)-treated grass silage or grasslmolassed sugar-beet pulp (MSBP) silage in late pregnancy. The experiment commenced on day 91 of pregnancy and the dietary treatments were FA-treated silage (Tl), FA-treated silage + soya-bean meal (SBM) (T2), MSBP silage (T3), MSBP silage + SBM (T4), FA-treated silage + MSBP (T5), FA-treated silage + MSBP + SBM (T6) or FA-treated silage + 150 g crude protein (CP) per kg concentrate (T7). SBM was given only in the last 22 days of pregnancy aiming for a total CP intake of 220 g per ewe per day. Blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture from each ewe 3 h following consumption of the morning dietary allowance on days 121, 128, 135 and 142 of pregnancy. Daily metabolizable energy (ME) intakes of 6·8, 11·4, 9·6, 12·8, 10·5, 13·7 and 14·7 (s.e. 0·58) MJ per ewe were recorded for Tl to T7 respectively over the last 3 weeks of pregnancy. Respective CP intakes of 72, 213, 110, 225, 109, 215 and 175 (s.e. 5·64) g per ewe were recorded for Tl to T7 respectively over the last 3 weeks of pregnancy. BHB concentrations (mmol/l) on day 121 of pregnancy of 1·18, 1·25, 0·52, 0·52, 0·56, 0·39 and 0·45 (s.e. 0·17), on day 128 of pregnancy of 1·17, 0·94, 0·52, 0·51, 0·72, 0·62 and 0·39 (s.e. 0·20), on day 135 of pregnancy of 1·53, 0·68, 0·68, 0·66, 0·71, 0·62 and 0·46 (s.e. 0·20) and on day 142 of pregnancy of 1·43, 0·60, 0·62, 0·56, 0·62, 0·56 and 0·63 (s.e. 0·20) were recorded for Tl to T7 respectively. There was a quadratic relationship between plasma BHB concentration and ME intake on days 121 (R2 = 0·538, P < 0·001), 128 (R2 = 0·324, P < 0·001), 135 (R2 = 0·429, P < 0·001)) and 142 (R2 = 0·344, P < 0·002) of pregnancy. There was a positive relationship between plasma glucose concentration and ME intake on day 222 (R2 = 0·208, P < 0·002), 228 (R2 = 0·203, P < 0·05), and 135 (R2 = 0·160, P < 0·02) of pregnancy. Albumin concentrations (gll) on day 128 of pregnancy of 21·8, 21·7, 23·6, 22·9, 22·5, 22·9 and 24·3 (s.e. 0-75), on day 135 of 20·9, 23·6, 24·2, 24·1, 22·4, 24·1 and 23·8 (s.e. 0·75), and on day 142 of 16·9, 22·6, 20·7, 22·2, 20·4, 22·7 and 21·1 (s.e. 1·05) were recorded for Tl to T7 respectively. Plasma albumin concentrations were significantly affected by SBM supplementation (P < 0·05). Despite the lower than generally recommended energy concentrations in T2 to T7, the concentrations of plasma BHB were within the normal range for healthy sheep.

AbstractA 3-week feeding trial using 300 1-day-old male broiler chicks was conducted to evaluate the effects of adding three levels of a microbial phytase (Finnfeed phytase; 250, 500 and 1000 U per kg diet) to a maize-soya-bean-meal diet containing 3·0 g/kg non-phytate phosphorus and 8·0 g/kg calcium. A diet containing 4·0 g/kg non-phytate phosphorus and 9·0 g/kg calcium served as the positive control. The responses were evaluated in terms of broiler performance, toe ash contents, ileal phytate degradation, ileal digestibility of nitrogen, amino acids, phosphorus, starch and fat, apparent metabolizable energy, apparent ileal digestible energy, and apparent retention of phosphorus and nitrogen. The addition of 500 U phytase per kg diet to the phosphorus-deficient maize-soya-bean-meal diet improved the performance and toe ash contents of broilers to equal those given the positive control diet. Ileal phytate degradation data provided direct evidence to the efficacy of phytase in hydrolysing the phytic acid. Addition of 500 U phytase per kg to the maize-soya-bean-meal diet which contained 3·0 g phytate-phosphorus per kg resulted in more than doubling of phytate degradation from 0·218 to 0·481. Supplemental phytase improved ileal digestibility of nitrogen, amino acids, starch and lipids, with these improvements being eventually reflected in enhancements in ileal digestible energy and apparent metabolizable energy.

AbstractOne hundred and twenty-six twin-bearing ewes were given either formic acid (FA) treated grass silage or grass/ molassed sugar-beet pulp (MSBP) silage in order to investigate factors affecting colostrum yield and quality and the efficiency of immunoglobulin (IgG) absorption. The experiment commenced on day 91 of pregnancy and the diets consisted ofFA-treated silage (Tl), FA-treated silage + soya-bean meal (SB) (72), MSBP silage (T3), MSBP silage + SB (T4), FA-treated silage + MSBP (T5), FA-treated silage + MSBP + SB (T6) or FA-treated silage + 150 g/kg of a crude protein concentrate (T7). Soya-bean meal was offered only in the last 3 weeks of pregnancy aiming for a total crude protein intake of220 g per ewe per day. Blood samples were taken from lambs in order to measure serum Ig concentrations. Ewes were milked at 1 h,10h and 18 h post lambing. Daily metabolizable energy intakes of 6·8, 11·4, 9·6, 12·8, 10·5, 13·7 and 14·7 (s.e. 0·58) M] per ewe were recorded for Tl to T7 respectively over the last 3 weeks of pregnancy. Respective crude protein intakes of 72, 213, 110, 225, 109, 215 and 175 (s.e. 5·64) g per ewe per day were recorded for Tl to T7 over the last 3 weeks of pregnancy. The addition of protein increased colostrum yield at 1 h (P < 0·01), 10 h (P < 0·01) and 18 h (P < 0·01) post lambing and total yield of colostrum to 18 h (P < 0·001). There was no significant response (P > 0·05) in colostrum production during the first 18 h following protein supplementation when the basic diet was FA-treated silage. There was no difference (P > 0·05) in colostrum production during the first 18 h between ewes offered MSBP treated silage or MSBP supplemented silage. Ewes offered FA-treated silage produced less colostrum during the first 18 h compared with ewes offered either MSBP treated or supplemented silage (P < 0·05). The production of colostral IgG during the first 18 h after parturition was related to the amount of colostrum produced; the greater the colostrum production the greater the Ig production. There was a significant quadratic relationship between the total amount of IgG ingested per kg lamb birth weight during the first 18 h and lamb serum IgG at 24 h (R2 = 0·4005; P < 0·0001). Lamb serum Ig level increased linearly with increasing colostrum IgG consumption up to 15 g/kg lamb birth weight. Proportionately about 0·17 of the IgG ingested was present in the lamb's circulation at 24 h. Ewe protein supplementation pre-lambing increased the lamb's efficiency to absorb colostral IgG (P < 0·05) during the first 24 h. In conclusion, the data show positive relationships between feeding regimes, colostrum production and IgG transfer.

ABSTRACTThree concentrate mixtures were compared in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square feeding trial with cows in early lactation to evaluate the effect of inclusion of tallow. The concentrates were based on barley and soya bean meal (223 g crude protein per kg dry matter) with either no tallow addition (control group) or with the addition of a protected tallow premix (0·75 spray-dried formaldehyde-treated tallow, 0·25 casein) or an unprotected tallow premix (0·75 spray-dried tallow, 0·25 casein), both added at 138 g/kg. Each concentrate was given at a rate of 8 kg per cow per day and silage was offered ad libitum. The inclusion of unprotected tallow in the concentrate did not significantly change milk yield, fat concentration, lactose concentration or live weight compared with those in the control group. The inclusion of the protected tallow supplement resulted in significantly higher yields of milk (22·9 kg/day), fat (0·95 kg/day) and lactose (1·05 kg/day) compared with those of the control group (21·3 kg/day, 0·79 kg/day, 0·95 kg/day), whilst milk protein concentration was significantly reduced. A digestibility trial with steers showed that, when hay was given with the diets, inclusion of tallow in the concentrate significantly increased the digestible and metabolizable energy concentration of the diets compared with the control diet, but dry matter, energy and fibre digestibility was reduced.
