AbstractA mathematical model based on heat and mass transfer processes in the porous wick of electronic cigarettes was established to describe the atomization of e-liquids according to max liquid temperature, vaporization rate and thermal efficiency in a single puff. Dominant capillary-evaporation effects were defined in the model to account for the effects of electrical power, e-liquid composition and porosity of the wick material on atomization and energy transmission processes. Liquid temperature, vaporization rate, and thermal efficiency were predicted using the mathematical model in 64 groups, varying with electrical power, e-liquid composition and wick porosity. Experimental studies were carried out using a scaled-model test bench to validate the model’s prediction. A higher PG/VG ratio in the e-liquid promoted energy transfer for vaporization, and the e-liquid temperature was comparatively reduced at a relatively high power, which was helpful to avoid atomizer overheating. Compared with the other factors, wick porosity affected the thermal efficiency more significantly. The vaporization rate increased with a higher wick porosity in a certain range. The modelling results suggested that a greater wick porosity and a higher PG ratio in e-liquids helped to improve the overall thermal efficiency.

IntroductionUse of flavoured pod-mod-like disposable electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has grown rapidly, particularly among cost-sensitive youth and young adults. To date, little is known about their design characteristics and toxicant emissions. In this study, we analysed the electrical and chemical characteristics and nicotine and pulmonary toxicant emission profiles of five commonly available flavoured disposable e-cigarettes and compared these data with those of a JUUL, a cartridge-based e-cigarette device that pod-mod-like disposables emulate in size and shape.MethodsDevice construction, electrical power and liquid composition were determined. Machine-generated aerosol emissions including particulate matter, nicotine, carbonyl compounds and heavy metals were also measured. Liquid and aerosol composition were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/flame ionisation detection, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.ResultsWe found that unlike JUUL, disposable devices did not incorporate a microcontroller to regulate electrical power to the heating coil. Quality of construction varied widely. Disposable e-cigarette power ranged between 5 and 9 W and liquid nicotine concentration ranged between 53 and 85 mg/mL (~95% in the protonated form). In 15 puffs, total nicotine yield for the disposables ranged between 1.6 and 6.7 mg, total carbonyls ranged between 28 and 138 µg, and total metals ranged between 1084 and 5804 ng. JUUL emissions were near the floors of all of these ranges.ConclusionsDisposable e-cigarettes are designed with high nicotine concentration liquids and are capable of emitting much higher nicotine and carbonyl species relative to rechargeable look-alike e-cigarettes. These differences are likely due to the lower quality in construction, unreliable labelling and lack of temperature control regulation that limits the power during operation. From a public health perspective, regulating these devices is important to limit user exposure to carbonyls and nicotine, particularly because these devices are popular with youth and young adults.

A mathematical modeling method was devoted to study the thermal performance of integral solar air collector. A mathematical model of heat transfer was set up based on one-dimension assumptions at first, and then numerical solution was brought out by using finite-difference method under one-dimension steady heat exchange. Through the MATLAB programming, the approximate solutions for the local air temperature and thermal efficiency were obtained at the quasi-steady state. After calculation, the influence of air inlet velocity, inlet temperature, solar radiation intensity and height of flow channel on the performance of collector was analyzed. It is discovered that the mathematical model is reasonable, the thermal efficiency decreases with temperature of inlet air increasing and increases with air velocity increasing, on which the solar radiation intensity have little influence. Depth of the channel and optimum flow both have a best value.

A two-dimensional, mathematical model is adopted to investigate the development of buoyancy driven circulation patterns and temperature contours inside a rectangular enclosure filled with a compressible fluid (Pr=1.0). One of the vertical walls of the enclosure is kept at a higher temperature then the opposing vertical wall. The top and the bottom of the enclosure are assumed insulated. The physics based mathematical model for this problem consists of conservation of mass, momentum (two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations) and energy equations for the enclosed fluid subjected to appropriate boundary conditions. The working fluid is assumed to be compressible through a simple ideal gas relation. The governing equations are discretized using second order accurate central differencing for spatial derivatives and first order forward finite differencing for time derivatives where the computation domain is represented by a uniform orthogonal mesh. The resulting nonlinear equations are then linearized using Newton’s linearization method. The set of algebraic equations that result from this process are then put into a matrix form and solved using a Coupled Modified Strongly Implicit Procedure (CMSIP) for the unknowns (primitive variables) of the problem. A numerical experiment is carried out for a benchmark case (driven cavity flow) to verify the accuracy of the proposed solution procedure. Numerical experiments are then carried out using the proposed compressible flow model to simulate the development of the buoyancy driven circulation patterns for Rayleigh numbers between 103 and 105. Finally, an attempt is made to determine the effect of compressibility of the working fluid by comparing the results of the proposed model to that of models that use incompressible flow assumptions together with Boussinesq approximation.

This paper deals with Numerical Study of 4-stoke, Single cylinder, Spark Ignition, Extended Expansion Lean Burn Engine. Engine processes are simulated using thermodynamic and global modeling techniques. In the simulation study following process are considered compression, combustion, and expansion. Sub-models are used to include effect due to gas exchange process, heat transfer and friction. Wiebe heat release formula was used to predict the cylinder pressure, which was used to find out the indicated work done. The heat transfer from the cylinder, friction and pumping losses also were taken into account to predict the brake mean effective pressure, brake thermal efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption. Extended Expansion Engine operates on Otto-Atkinson cycle. Late Intake Valve Closure (LIVC) technique is used to control the load. The Atkinson cycle has lager expansion ratio than compression ratio. This is achieved by increasing the geometric compression ratio and employing LIVC. Simulation result shows that there is an increase in thermal efficiency up to a certain limit of intake valve closure timing. Optimum performance is attained at 90 deg intake valve closure (IVC) timing further delaying the intake valve closure reduces the engine performance.

The reported study discusses the formation of micro- and nanocrystalline surface layers in alloys on the example of Ti-Y and Al-Si-Y systems irradiated by electron beams. The study has established a crystallization mechanism of molten layers in the micro-and nanodimensional range, which involves a variety of hydrodynamic instabilities developing on the plasma–melt interface. As suggested, micro- and nanostructures form due to the combination of thermocapillary, concentration and capillary, evaporation and capillary and thermoelectric instabilities. This mechanism has provided the foundation for a mathematical model to describe the development of structures in focus in the electron beam irradiation. The study has pointed out that thermoelectric field strength E ≥ 106 V/m is attributed to the occurring combination of instabilities in micro- and nanodimensional ranges. A full dispersion equation of perturbations on the melt surface was analyzed.

This work focuses on an experimental study of the influence of e-liquid composition on the mass of vaporized e-liquid after standardized emission generation using a U-SAV (Universal System for Analysis of Vaping) vaping machine. All the experiments were based on the use of a Cubis 1Ω clearomiser and on the standard protocol for electronic cigarettes emission generation. Currently, there is no standardized method available to calibrate the emission generations of electronic cigarettes. Since the e-liquid compositions are not always known, we propose a simple, practical, effective, and fast method of emission generation calibration. Therefore, this paper examines a major issue in this new and constantly evolving field, allowing the validation of the emission generation results. To our knowledge, this method is a novelty in our discipline and could be easily developed in laboratories. Pure propylene-glycol, glycerol, ethanol, and water and their mixtures (20 e-liquids) were tested as reference materials, allowing an e-liquids benchmarking and the characterization of 800 commercial e-liquids (with known and unknown compositions) at a fixed power and for one inhalation profile (3 s puff duration and 55 mL of puff volume). The influence of ethanol and/or water addition in the e-liquid was characterized.
