The use of flunarizine, a drug which has proven its efficacy in migraine, is often associated with important side effects. The aim of this paper has been to check their incidence at different dose levels (5 mg vs 10 mg). Our data confirm the occurrence of important side effects (in particular weight gain); on the other hand, they emphasize the dose-dependency of the side effects.

Zearalenone (ZEA) is a potent estrogenic metabolite produced by some Fusarium species. No treatment has been successfully employed to get rid of the ZEA contained in foods. This study was conducted to evaluate the ability (adsorptive power) of five adsorbents—activated carbon, bentonite, talc, sandstone, and calcium sulfate—to trap ZEA in vitro. Activated carbon was the best adsorbent, binding 100% ZEA (pH 3 and 7.3) at 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, and 1% dose levels. Bentonite, talc, and calcium sulfate were less efficient than activated carbon but still could bind ZEA to some extent. On the other hand, sandstone was inactive in the experimental conditions employed. Our results indicate that activated carbon could be a good candidate for detoxification of ZEA present in foods.

Clinical observations of recent years, showing, on the one hand, that the use of the antiseptic method in surgery often has undesirable side effects both on the patient's body and on the operating person himself; on the other hand, the excellent results obtained by surgeons who do not use the antiseptic method and observe only cleanliness have compelled operators with well-established clinics to replace antiseptics with asepsis more and more.

Abstract Background and Aims Interdialytic weight gain (IDWG) has been linked to various complications in hemodialysis (HD) patients, especially cardiovascular (CV) complications. We aimed to evaluate the effect of IDWG in HD patients on the rate of hospital admissions over a 12-month period, and the impact of high IDWG on the frequency of IDH. Method The study included 120 patients; who had been receiving HD for at least 3 months. The presence of various comorbidities has been recorded including. Laboratory data included; serum creatinine, serum albumin, and hemoglobin level. The estimated IDWG was calculated based on the average between pre- and post- dialysis weights that were recorded on 3 consecutive dialysis sessions. Results Among those who had IDWG ≥ 4%, 81% of these patients had at least one hospital admission due to volume overload or the need for extra HD session(s). On the other hand, only 19% of those having IDWG < 4% had been admitted or got extra HD sessions (p<0.001). Of those who were admitted (over 12 months) due to volume overload; 74.1 % had IDWG ≥ 4%, while 25.9% had IDWG < 4% (p< 0.001). Regarding IDH, 87% of patients having IDWG ≥ 4% had at least one episode of IDH/week. On the other hand, only 22.5% of those with IDWG < 4% had one episode of IDH/week (p<0.001). When analyzing those who had at least one IDH episode/week; 72.9% of them had IDWG ≥ 4%, while only 27.1% had IDWG < 4% (p<0.001). Conclusion In HD patients, the frequency of hospital admission due to volume overload and the need for extra HD sessions is strongly related to the amount of IDWG (> 4% in our patients), the same stands for the frequency of IDH. Thus, a control of IDWG in HD patient is of great importance, keeping in mind the importance the nutrition status of HD patients that may also impact IDWG.

18575 Background: Following previous institutional observations, this protocol was designed to evaluate the efficacy of Gabapentin in the prophylaxis of delayed CT induced NV. Methods: The main elegibility criteria was moderate and severe NV on previous CT cycles.Gabapentin 300 mg caps. was given as follows: One capsule day -2, two capsules day -1 and one capsule tid from days 1 to 5. 24 pats. were evaluated; 22 (92%) female, 2 (8%) male.CT included Doxorubicin/Ciclofosfamide 15 (62.5%), Cis-Platin 5 (21%), Other regimens 4 (17%). Previous prophylaxis for all pats. included a 5-HT3 Antagonist plus Dexametasone. Pats. were instructed to complete a two-page Questionaire: On page 1 pats. indicated the intensity of nausea according a scale shown there. On page two they indicated the number of vomits they had. This was made three times daily for five days. The primary endpoint was reduction of NV aftyer CT. Results: The reduction observed in the number of vomits was as follows: Number of pats. that experienced 0 Vomits: day 1 (CT): 14 (58.3%); day 2: 18 (75%); day 3: 20 (83.3%); day 4: 18 (75%); day 5: 22 (91.7%). On the other hand, pats. that did not respond and had three or more vomits daily: day 1: 5 (20.8%); day 2: 2 (8.3%); day 3: 1 (4.2%); day 4: 3 (12.5%); day 5: 2 (8.3%).Most pats. experienced a decrease in the intensity of nausea as well. No significant side effects were seen. Conclusions: Gabapentin seems to have some efficacy preventing delayed NV after moderately and highly emetogenic CT. These results together with it’s possible effect on acute NV and good tolerability warrant further studies. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Space closure is one of the most challenging processes in Orthodontics and requires a solid comprehension of biomechanics in order to avoid undesirable side effects. Understanding the biomechanical basis of space closure better enables clinicians to determine anchorage and treatment options. In spite of the variety of appliance designs, space closure can be performed by means of friction or frictionless mechanics, and each technique has its advantages and disadvantages. Friction mechanics or sliding mechanics is attractive because of its simplicity; the space site is closed by means of elastics or coil springs to provide force, and the brackets slide on the orthodontic archwire. On the other hand, frictionless mechanics uses loop bends to generate force to close the space site, allowing differential moments in the active and reactive units, leading to a less or more anchorage control, depending on the situation. Objective: This article will discuss various theoretical aspects and methods of space closure based on biomechanical concepts.

ABSTRACTThe isothermal oxidation-sulfidation of Fe-40Al based intermetallics alloys in N2/SO2 gas mixture at 625, 700 and 775°C were evaluated. Fe40Al, Fe40Al+0.1B, Fe40Al+0.1B+10Al2O3 alloys were produced by atomization and deposition. Isothermal gas exposition was reached during 48 hours. FeAl based alloys showed good sulfidation resistance, presenting both small weight gain and weight change fluctuations. At 625°C, the Fe40Al+0.1B alloy had the biggest weight gain; on the other hand the Fe40Al alloy exhibited the biggest sulfidation resistance. At 700 and 775°C, the Fe40Al+0.1B alloy presented the smallest weight gain, however Fe40Al alloy presented higher weight gain, that is to say, the smallest sulfidation resistance at those temperatures. The variation in the weight gain curves were discussed in terms of formation and detachment of sulfides, and by local attack on the alloy surface as the temperature increasing. The results are supplemented with characterization by SEM and analysis of X-rays dispersion.

Prostate cancer (PC) is one of the most common malignancies among men and is the second leading cause of cancer death. PC immunotherapy has taken relatively successful steps in recent years, and these treatments are still being developed and tested. Evidence suggests that immunotherapy using cytokines as essential mediators in the immune system may help treat cancer. It has been shown that cytokines play an important role in anti-tumor defense. On the other hand, other cytokines can also favor the tumor and suppress anti-tumor responses. Moreover, the dose of cytokine in cancer cytokine-based immunotherapy, as well as the side effects of high doses, can also affect the outcomes of treatment. Cytokines can also be determinative in the outcome of other immunotherapy methods used in PC. In this review, the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of cancer and their impacts on the main types of immunotherapies in the treatment of PC are discussed.

The present investigation was carried out to detect the status of different productive and reproductive parameters of Black Bengal and Crossbred goats at Bandaikhara village under Atrai Upazilla of Naogaon district during the period of September to December/2005. The average age at first sign of heat of Black Bengal goats was better than that of Crossbred goats. In Black Bengal goat the average age at first kidding was 360.5±10 days, whereas, in crossbred goats it was 411.5±15.5 day. Significantly (P<0.01) lower the post partum heat period in Black Bengal goat than the crossbred goat. The average kidding interval in Black Bengal and Crossbred goats were 179±20 and 270±22 days respectively and differences are statistically significant (P<0.01). The usual numbers of kids at one time in Black Bengal goats vary from single to quadruplet. On the other hand, litter size of crossbred goat was single or twin. The average birth weight of Black Bengal goat was lower than Crossbred goats, which are statistically significant (P<0.05). The average body weight gain after 365 days is better in Crossbred than Black Bengal goats and statistically significant (P<0.01). The average milk yield in Crossbred goat was 1.05 liter/day, whereas, in Black Bengal goat, it produces milk that only nourished its kids. It was concluded that the reproductive performance like early maturity, larger litter size, shorter postpartum period, minimum kidding interval are better in Black Bengal goat. On the other hand productive performance like higher birth weight, maximum body weight gain, high milk yield, longer lactation length are suitable in crossbred goat. The results of a double-blind cross-over clinical trial involving 27 patients with classical or common migraine are described to compare the prophylactic effect of the calcium entry-blocker flunarizine with that of pizotifen. Duration of the treatment was two months, with an evening single-dose administration of both drugs. For most parameters, there was no definite difference between flunarizine and pizotifen in migraine prophylaxis. It has been demonstrated previously that pizotifen is an effective drug in migraine prophylaxis, and these results suggest that flunarizine is effective, too. Weight gain as a side effect was less frequent and less severe with flunarizine than with pizotifen; other side effects showed the same incidence with both drugs.
