Paper presents the process capabilities for solidification hazardous waste. In the first part of the article the authors present general technologies and methods in a comparative model. The following section describes the results of market research for the most advanced and innovative solidification technologies. Comparative analysis of the material has shown and described the three most promising, leading-edge technologies of waste solidification avalible on the Polish market.

Given the amount of industrial waste produced and collected in the world today, a recycling and recovery process is needed. The study carried out on this subject focuses on the valorization of one of these industrial wastes, namely the fly ash produced by an ultra-supercritical coal power plant. This paper describes the use and recovery of fly ash as a high percentage reinforcement for the development of a new high-performance composite material for use in various fields. The raw material, fly ash, comes from the staged combustion of coal, which occurs in the furnace of an ultra-supercritical boiler of a coal-fired power plant. Mechanical compression, thermal conductivity, and erosion tests are used to study the mechanical, thermal, and erosion behavior of this new composite material. The mineralogical and textural analyses of samples were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). SEM confirmed the formation of a new composite by a polymerization reaction. The results obtained are very remarkable, with a high Young’s modulus and a criterion of insulation, which approves the presence of a potential to be exploited in the different fields of materials. In conclusion, the composite material presented in this study has great potential for building material and could represent interesting candidates for the smart city.

Investigation of the influence of the peculiarities of raw material composition and structure of traditional and innovative linen textile materials on their hygienic properties. Theoretical and experimental investigations are based on the main positions of textile materials science. In experimental studies, modern standardized methods for determining the hygienic properties of textile materials were used, as well as techniques specially developed taking into account the peculiarities of the operating conditions of underwear. The peculiarities of the operating conditions and the basic functions of hospital underwear were determined. The comparative analysis of hygienic properties of traditional and modern fabrics for underwear was carried out. Using the standardized and the developed methods, adapted to the peculiarities of the conditions of use of the products, the indicators characterizing the processes of water absorption of the materials were experimentally determined. On the basis of the obtained values of quality indicators, a comprehensive assessment of the ability of materials to transfer moisture and air, with the calculation of the arithmetic complex quality index was done. This allowed to determine the material that is optimal in properties, which provides thermophysiological comfort when operating hospital underwear. Using the developed methods, which take into account the specifics of the operating conditions, a comparative analysis of the hygienic properties of traditional and innovative materials for underwear was carried out. A new range of textile materials for underwear has been proposed, taking into account the peculiarities of the operational situation of consumption.

Entering into the new field of business is not an easy go. One has to do market research, to identify the gap, to identify the product/service to be offered, and to target the right customer segment. Searching for vendors and finalizing the right one are few other issues. After having worked successfully for more than 30 years in Bali in the field of sesame seeds and oil business Harsh was standing on a crossroad in 2011. Rising prices of sesame oil resulted in shift in customers’ taste and preferences towards refined oil. Moreover entry of big players at a large scale of operations and rise in price of raw material (sesame seeds) made survival tough. He had a number of options, one to continue with existing business at different scale of operations. Two, enter another business? Three, what business, Four, which place? The case talks about Harsh’s journey to new business, his choice and then the result.

In the conditions of self-isolation, a small and medium business suffered as a result of a pandemic, however, large business remained afloat due to large “long money”. Large business in Kazakhstan is mainly a raw material business, i.e., the mining industry, as a priority, has not suspended its activities. The tasks in the field of attracting investment remained the same. For Kazakhstan, in the direction of attracting foreign investment, firstly, it is worth identifying competitive sectors of the economy. Secondly, clearly understand the key factors in the development of these industries. Thirdly, to conduct a comparative analysis and assess the advantages and disadvantages in relation to other countries, which will be the main competitors in this industry. Fourth, identify potential investors. Fifth, optimize the activities of the coordinating agency or body that is responsible for investments in Kazakhstan. For US investors, the stock market in Kazakhstan is very small. It presents mainly companies in the mining and financial sectors of the economy, as well as the public sector. The limited financing opportunities in the stock market do not allow providing higher returns on investment funds, and this in turn negatively affects the influx of potential investors and investors.

Electronic products enter the waste stream rapidly due to technological enhancements. Their parts and material recovery involve significant economic and environmental gain. To regain the value added to such products a certain level of disassembly may be required. Disassembly operations are often expensive and the complexity of determining the best disassembly sequence increases as the number of parts in a product grows. Therefore, it is necessary to develop methodologies for obtaining optimal or near optimal disassembly sequences to ensure efficient recovery process. To that end, this chapter introduces a Genetic Algorithm based methodology to develop disassembly sequencing for end-of-life products. A numerical example is presented to provide and demonstrate better understating and functionality of the algorithm.

The consideration towards waste cooking oils is changing from hazardous waste to valuable raw material for industrial application. During the last 5 years, some innovative processes based on the employment of recycled waste cooking oil have appeared in the literature. In this review article, the most recent and innovative applications of recycled waste cooking oil are reported and discussed. These include the production of bioplasticizers, the application of chemicals derived from waste cooking oils as energy vectors and the use of waste cooking oils as a solvent for pollutant agents.

PurposeThe paper aims to propose the development of an eco product to replace the traditional cotton swab that meets the expected needs, besides having a bias based on sustainability and economic viability.Design/methodology/approachThe applied nature article opted for an exploratory and descriptive study, with the objective of seeking a solution to a real problem: to reduce the environmental impact in the disposal of cotton swabs. To test this hypothesis, the exploratory stage evaluated the literature on the principles of eco design and environmental marketing to understand market viability and environmental impacts. The descriptive phase presented a comparative analysis between the original product and the proposed one, in terms of production processes and impacts of the product life cycle. Thus, an alternative product was conceived and validated applying the life cycle analysis (LCA).FindingsThe paper provides a comparative analysis between the eco product and the traditional product in order to validate the hypothesis that the new proposal reduces the environmental impact. It was found that both productive processes have similar impacts; however, the raw material of the proposed eco product demonstrated a significant reduction in the impact caused on the environment, considering cradle to cradle analysis.Originality/valueThis paper conceives an eco product as an alternative to traditional cotton swab, presenting an innovative potential in line with worldwide sustainability trends.

The critics against the land use of sewage sludge in Germany lead the research institutions to investigate methods for nutrient recovery. Current research proved that the nutrients such as nitrogen or phosphorus can be recovered. Though, the costs still must be reduced to compete with the conventional production using fresh raw material. Recovery products are not listed in current legislations concerning fertiliser use, therefore the land use of the recovered products require some legislative replenishments. The paper portrays the current situation concerning the above discussions with an overview on the actual recovery technologies
