The amount of potential investment in Padang City, Indonesia since 2017 attracted many investors to contribute to the city. One of the investments is a 12-story hotel that will be constructed in By Pass Street of the city. The hotel is located in a high seismic zone area, so the seismic base isolation has been proposed to be used in the hotel building. The main aim of using a seismic base isolation device is to reduce the inertia forces introduced in the structure due to earthquakes by shifting the fundamental period of the structure out of dangerous resonance range and concentration of the deformation demand at the isolation system. An analytical study on the Reinforced Concrete (RC) hotel building with and without rubber bearing (RB) base isolation is carried out using the response spectrum and time history analysis methods. The results show that internal forces and inter-story drift of the building with high damping rubber bearing (HDRB) are lower than that of the fixed base with a remarkable margin. From this study, it is recommended to use the HDRB base isolation for medium and high rise buildings with soft soil in Padang City, Indonesia.

This research evaluates the effectiveness of using a roller-type base isolation device with tensile strength in reducing the dynamic response of industrial steel storage racks. These were subjected to a seismic input acting separately in both directions of the structure. The seismic record obtained from the earthquake that occurred in Llolleo, Chile, on 3 March 1985, was used as input. This earthquake was scaled in the frequency domain, adjusting its response spectrum to coincide with the design spectrum required by NCh2745. In the calculations of this spectrum, the most hazardous seismic zone (zone 3) and soft soil (soil III) that amplifies the effect of the low frequencies of the earthquake were considered. These frequencies are the ones that have the most affect on flexible structures such as high racks and systems with base isolation. Numerical time-history analyses were performed in fixed base racks and base isolation racks. In both cases, the models include semi-rigid connections with capacity for plastic deformation and energy dissipation. Parametric analyses were carried out considering the most relevant variables, using an algorithm programmed in MATLAB software. The maximum relative displacement, maximum basal shear load, and maximum absolute floor acceleration were considered as responses of interest. The results showed the effectiveness of using the base isolation device by reducing the absolute accelerations between approximately 75% and 90%, compared to the same fixed rack at its base. This makes it possible to reduce the vulnerability of the stored load to overturn under the action of a severe earthquake.

Base isolation is one of the effective ways for controlling civil engineering structures in seismic zone which can reduce seismic demand. Also is an efficient passive control mechanism that protects its superstructure during an earthquake. However, residual displacement of base-isolation systems, resulting from strong ground motions, remain as the main obstacle in such system’s serviceability after the earthquake. Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) is amongst the newly introduced smart materials that can undergo large nonlinear deformations with considerable dissipation of energy without having any permanent displacement afterward. This property of SMA may be utilized for designing of base isolation system to increase the structure’s serviceability. Here, a proposed semi-active isolation system combines laminated rubber bearing system with shape memory alloy, to take advantage of SMAs high elastic strain range, in order to reduce residual displacements of the laminated rubber bearing. Merits of the system are demonstrated by comparing it to common laminated rubber bearing isolation systems. It is found that the optimal application of SMAs in base-isolation systems can significantly reduce bearings’ residual displacements. In this study, OpenSees program for a three dimensional six-storey steel frame building has been used by locating the isolators under the columns for investigating the feasibility of smart base isolation systems, i.e., the combination of traditional Laminated Rubber Bearing (LRB) with the SMA, in reducing the structure’s isolated-base response to near field earthquake records are examined. Also, a new configuration of SMAs in conjunction with LRB is considered which make the system easier to operate and maintain.

In this study, the influence of soil condition under the isolated and fixed bases is studied by using ETABS 16 software for the high-rise regular building. A regular building with 10 floors is modeled and the results are obtained for story displacements, story shear forces and spectral acceleration according to Uniform Building Code 97 (UBC-97) code. The time history analysis has been performed by using 1999 Izmit earthquake record. 3 types of soil which had different stiffnesses are considered in this study. The results show that the value of base shear increases when the soil stiffness decreases. It also noticed that the spectral acceleration is larger in soft soil condition than that of other soil conditions; and this confirms that the structural response spectrum is associated with the soil condition. In addition, when using base isolated building the drift of lower floors will be larger than that of using base isolated, but in the upper floors the drifts of fixed base building will be larger than that of the isolated base building. Finally, time history method in the seismic design will produce base shear less than that from equivalent static method, so calibration factor for design purpose shall be used.

In the present paper base isolation system is analyzed and its seismic behavior is investigated using U-shaped steel dampers as an isolator by placing it at the bottom of the structure. It is the most popular way of protecting the structure using control techniques for earthquake ground motion. The dampers significantly reduced damage factors such as displacement and drift. To reduce structural response to external forces, which can be accomplished through the use of special protective systems. So to prevent these damages, seismic isolation technique can be used for newly constructed structures. The time history analysis of the time domain on this structure is conducted by using SAP2000 software

In this paper a new seismic base isolator, called High Damping Hybrid Seismic Isolator (HDHSI), is proposed. It is obtained by the assembly in series of a Lead Rubber Bearing (LRB) and a Friction Slider (FS) with a high friction coefficient. The HDHSI device is in contrast with the Resilient-Friction Base Isolator (R-FBI) with the aim of optimizing the Electricité De France (EDF) system. The mathematical model of a structure base isolated by a HDHSI system is analyzed with a two Degree of Freedom System (2-DOF) in which the superstructure is assimilated to a rigid body. Nonlinear finite elements are adopted for modeling the HDHSI device. A dynamic nonlinear analysis is performed and the hysteretic cycles are derived and evaluated for the single components and for the innovative HDHSI device.

In a parallel paper a new High Damping Hybrid Seismic Isolator (HDHSI) has been proposed and obtained by the assembly in series of a Lead Rubber Bearing (LRB) and a Friction Slider (FS) characterized by a high friction coefficient. In the present paper, within the context of seismic base isolation techniques for the earthquake resistance of Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings, a multi-storey RC building is analyzed as base isolated by the seismic isolator HDHSI (High Damping Hybrid Seismic Isolator). The seismic response of this base isolated RC building is compared with the seismic response of the same structure isolated by a LRB (Lead Rubber Bearing) isolator. The analysis is developed by considering different seismic events in terms of intensity and in terms of frequency content with regard to a supervening collapse. The purpose of this comparative analysis is to highlight the features offered by the HDHSI system compared to the LRB system in the seismic protection of structures. Accordingly, a nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed for a RC structure base isolated by means of the proposed device. In the analysis anomalous seismic events are considered. They are the El Centro earthquake (N00W component, 1940) which is characterized by high intensity and the Erzincan earthquake (N90W component, 1992) which is characterized by anomalous frequency content. The comparison between the two base isolation systems is presented by analyzing the time history of the shear force and the time history of the displacement at the base of the superstructure. The benefits of the HDHSI system in conferring protection to the structure are shown to be significant even under extreme seismic events.

Abstract: These days earthquake is a major problem for development of high rise building in seismic zone areas. Researchers have developed devices to overcome these earthquake problems. So we need to design a structure which can withstand against the seismic loads. There for it became necessity to provide passive control device “base isolation” to resists large horizontal and vertical loads which lead the structure to collapse. In present workthe effectiveness of the fixed base and Base isolation (LRB) with different type of vertical irregularities in different type of soil (Hard, Medium, Soft soil) in plan are concerned the vibration of the structure. The present work G+10 story Building of different vertical irregularities ( Regular building, vertical irregular Type-I, vertical irregular Type-II, vertical irregular Type-III ) Situated in zone IV are analyzed under the various Loading such as dead load, live load and earthquake load. Free vibration analysis, response spectrum analysis have been carried out for these model of building with a fixed base and base Isolation Devices. It is observed that story displacement in response spectrum is significantly increases at top stories with the base isolated building. And this work shows that the response of building reduced by using base isolation (LRB) devices in all different typeof vertical irregularities building, but the same isolation device is more effectively work in Vertical irregular Type-II Building Keywords: Base isolation Techniques, LRB, Base Shear and Etabs etc.

In recent years, frequent earthquakes have caused great casualties and economic losses in China. And in the earthquake, damage of buildings and the collapse is the main reason causing casualties. Therefore, in the design of constructional engineering, a seismicity of architectural structure is the pressing task at issue. Through time history analysis method, this paper analyzes the time history of building structural response and then it predicts the peak response of mode by response spectrum analysis. Based on this, this paper constructs a numerical simulation model for the architecture by using finite element analysis software SATWE. At the same time, this paper also calculates the structure seismic so as to determine the design of each function structure in architectural engineering design and then provides reference for the realization of earthquake-resistant building.

<p>In order to overcome stringent seismic requirement in the new Greater Jakarta Light Rail Transit Project, a breakthrough seismic system shall be chosen to obtain expected structural performance. This seismic system shall be designed to provide operational performance level after strong earthquake events. To achieve the criteria, seismic isolation system using Lead Rubber Bearings is chosen. With this isolation system, Greater Jakarta LRT has become the first seismically isolated infrastructure and apparently an infrastructure with the largest numbers of LRBs in one single project in Indonesia. More than 10.400 Pcs LRBs are used for the first phase of the construction and the numbers will be certainly increased in the next phase of the construction. To evaluate the structural performance, non-linear time history analysis is used. A total of 3 pair matched ground motions will be used as the input for the response history analysis. The ability of the lead rubber bearing to isolate and dissipate earthquake actions will determine its structural performance level. This will be represented by the nonlinear hysteretic curves obtained throughout the earthquake actions.</p>
