Social entrepreneurship is a relatively new form of solving problems in society. The development of social entrepreneurship depends on many factors, particularly the formal and informal institutional environment. The latter is undergoing rapid transformations driven by digital technology. The purpose of this study is to analyze and substantiate the impact of digitalization on the informal institutional environment at various stages of a social enterprise’s life cycle. The study uses the data on European countries provided by international reports the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and European Index of Digital Entrepreneurship Systems (EIDES). Methodologically, we rely on regression and correlation analysis methods. The study provides evidence of the significance of the Internet accessibility to households for the development of social entrepreneurship. The research also shows the features of informal institutions for social entrepreneurship. The theoretical significance of this study is that we showed the patterns of social entrepreneurship development, taking into account the digital component of informal institutions. As for the practical significance of the study, we have demonstrated that it is important to consider specific stages in the life cycle of an organization and their characteristics in designing economic institutions to stimulate the development of social entrepreneurship.

A steam surface condenser can operate very reliably for many years. However, much of the tubing will spend a good portion of its life in a most demanding environment of high stresses, mechanical vibration, temperature variations causing thermal stresses, and exposure to corrosive chemicals and waters. Traditionally used copper alloys and lower performance 300 series stainless steel alloys may, at some point during the operating life of the plant, require replacement. The challenge for the plant operations staff is to understand the possible material failure mechanisms, and once they impact profitable performance, develop a long term cost analysis to determine the lowest cost replacement solution. This paper identifies the potential causes of condenser and heat exchanger tube failures and their alternative solutions, the impact of metal transport and provides tools to assign costs to help develop an economic justification for the replacement using a life-cycle analysis. In addition to the cost for treatment chemicals, the paper identifies the impact of forced outages and derates, reduction of generation, and other operation related costs, including the future potential of CO2 charges. Using HEI criteria, the thermal and mechanical performance of various tube materials are compared and used to build a model to justify the retube payback.

AbstractHigher education institutions are striving to lower student dropout rates to increase the number of academically qualified persons in the labour market and decrease misguided investment. Researchers generally acknowledge that students who are firmly decided on their studies tend to drop out of their studies less frequently. Building on the extended expectancy-value model via the cost component, this longitudinal study investigates changes in and the impact of students’ motivation on career decidedness and intention to drop out. We analysed data from 351 first-year university students aiming to become teachers across three measurement points, finding that the task effort of students and, to a lesser degree, their interest value was related to career decidedness and, indirectly, to the intention to drop out after the first year in higher education. Moreover, the results revealed that these students’ ability beliefs increased and interest value decreased from the beginning to the end of the first year at higher education. Accordingly, we discuss the theoretical and practical implications taken from these findings.
