AimsWe often have patients who are admitted to the ward wearing only the clothes they came in. These patients have no way of going to get more clothes due to being detained, poverty/ homelessness or covid restrictions. Many do not have friends or family who can bring them clothes. As such they might wear one set of clothes for a number of weeks which is bad for their physical and mental health. We are creating a clothes bank to provide a change of clothes for these patients, and help their recovery back into the community. Many have clothes that are inappropriate for the current weather, or do not have a set of smart enough clothes for a job interview. We feel that this simple intervention will have a big community impact.MethodWe have obtained support from a number of charities and companies to supply donations. The project will be led by a team of staff and patients.ResultWe will review the usage of this scheme in 6 months timeConclusionWe hope this intervention will tackle the issue of clothing on mental health wards. In the future we wish to expand this to outpatient mental health service users. We would then like to expand this project countrywide as are unaware of any other areas providing something similar.

Estimates indicate the lifespan of individuals with psychotic illness is reduced by approximately 15-20 years. Consequently there is a need to address the physical health of those who live with a mental illness, like psychosis. The Bondi Centre provides an integrated model of care to young people with a first episode of psychosis. The Keeping the Body In Mind program focuses on prevention and early intervention of physical health issues and is offered alongside treatment for mental health and social issues as part of routine care. We used body mapping, an arts-based research method, to explore the complexity of this physical health intervention. Our aim was to develop an in-depth understanding of experiences of young clients of the early intervention centre, with a particular focus on the embodied relationship between physical and mental health. Six young people engaged in creating life-sized body maps depicting their experience of the physical intervention program over four 3-hour sessions, followed by an in-depth interview. Analysis of our body maps drew on thematic analysis and narrative inquiry. The narrative trope was one of recovery, highlighting the importance of the link between body and mind, individual and community, and the balance between light and darkness. There was an emphasis on developing feelings of connectedness (to self and others), hope and optimism for the future, a sense of having an identity, and a sense of meaning and empowerment. Recovery was conceptualised as an ongoing process rather than an end product or fixed state. Involvement in the body mapping process was consistently identified as therapeutic, offering an opportunity for reflection on the journey to recovery with a focus on past, present and imagined storylines of the future.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) seniors face disparities in physical and mental health as well as high rates of social isolation and risk of discrimination in comparison to cisgender, heterosexual people. Having identities and experiences silenced by real or perceived risks of discrimination increases isolation and vulnerability for marginalized communities and individuals. This article presents the case of Janelle, a senior, transgender lesbian, and her experiences of isolation and intersecting disparities before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how those experiences shape her concerns about the future. Her experiences demonstrate the ways in which the health and social risks presented by the pandemic exacerbate preexisting vulnerabilities for older LGBT adults.

Self-management interventions focus on components such as information, medication taking, mood management, and practical strategies for support in daily life. This chapter argues that, in addition to these strategies, fostering hope is important to effective self-management in both physical and mental health. Hope is a cognitive set, focused on the future, and is operationalized as cross-situational goals and behaviors to achieve these goals. A unique intervention, built on positive psychology and hope theory, is described to exemplify the evidence and application of these concepts. The “Help to Overcome Problems Effectively” (HOPE) program’s design, content, and outcomes are provided. Further research is suggested, focusing on exploring hope as a mechanism for change.

Who cares about health care in prisons? You do if you have a son or a granddaughter in prison. Maybe you care anyway if you have had to wait a long time to see a doctor or if you could not have the treatment you needed because it cost too much. Maybe you have run into the attitude, “You ain’t bleedin’, you ain’t needin’.” Maybe you have found it hard to face the future with little or no hope that you could ever be in a better place. Or maybe you, like some older prisoners, have been able to develop new interests, new skills, to review your life and review it, and to redefine what matters.

Ever since the dawn of humankind, people have been preoccupied with their physical and mental health. Even though many causes of disease remained obscure for millennia, humans have been quite inventive to find remedies for many ailments. Only quite recently, discoveries of pathogenic agents such as bacteria and viruses have paved the way for the development of modern antimicrobial therapies and preventive measures including hygiene. We now know, however, that the indiscriminate use of antibiotics has produced new problems, and excessive hygiene may be causally involved in the emergence of autoimmune diseases. Chapter 18 proposes that evolutionary medicine may be informative in understanding seemingly unpredictable consequences of advances in some areas of medical treatment. Moreover, the authors believe that evolutionary medicine could help avoid many of the pitfalls associated with the negligence of important evolutionary concepts by contemporary medicine.

Abstract. Background: Suicide can have a lasting impact on the social life as well as the physical and mental health of the bereaved. Targeted research is needed to better understand the nature of suicide bereavement and the effectiveness of support. Aims: To take stock of ongoing studies, and to inquire about future research priorities regarding suicide bereavement and postvention. Method: In March 2015, an online survey was widely disseminated in the suicidology community. Results: The questionnaire was accessed 77 times, and 22 records were included in the analysis. The respondents provided valuable information regarding current research projects and recommendations for the future. Limitations: Bearing in mind the modest number of replies, all from respondents in Westernized countries, it is not known how representative the findings are. Conclusion: The survey generated three strategies for future postvention research: increase intercultural collaboration, increase theory-driven research, and build bonds between research and practice. Future surveys should include experiences with obtaining research grants and ethical approval for postvention studies.
