One aspect of Kuching City that has not progressed in tandem with the rest of the city is the public transport system, which is relatively old and almost non-existent. Transport and City planners seem to be at their wit’s end in coming up with satisfactory solutions to Kuching’s public transportation woes. In current situation, many proposals, but none have proven workable. As a result, representative buses remain a rare sight on Kuching city’s roads. To achieve a sustainable public transport industry, the old buses need to be regenerated and replaced with modern buses. The objectives of the intended study are to explore the consumer’s travel behaviour by employing mode choice modelling. Consequently, a study was conducted in Kuching City Area by using stated preference technique, analysed and compiled by using SPSS.17 multiple linear regressions analysis. In this context, discrete choice analysis was used to examine the relationship between independent variables (travel time, waiting time, fares and comfort) and dependent variables (choice of respondent whether to consume old bus or choose new bus services). A total of 2000 respondents were interviewed. The findings showed that for the trips purpose, fares and comfortability were the primary factors that reflected the decision or behaviour of the respondents asked. It was discovered that there is a significant relationship between the choice of the respondents and comfortability. It also appeared that longer travel time did not affect for the traveler’s choice at this stage. Hence, the study suggests that the local authority and the bus operators should establish a “quality partnership” and working together in order to come out with a much better and appropriate transport policy and schemes for the existing public transportation systems, especially bus services.

For the trips purpose to school, recreation, shopping and others, most of the respondents preferred to opt for scenario 5 (travel time 20 min, frequency 20 min, fare RM 2.00, and the level of comfort is good with AC system) which gave the highest demand with the percentage of 75.4%, 55.1%, 70.3% and 69.1% respectively. On the other hand, scenario 3 (travel time 30 min, frequency 15 min, fare RM 2.00, and the level of comfort is good with AC system) was chosen for the purpose of working trips with the percentage of 50.5% respectively. Thus, it can be concluded that scenario 5 is the most appropriate condition to be implemented for the future bus services to serve the consumers in Kuching city subjected to a condition whereby the bus operators need to deliver a better, comfortable and reasonable fares bus services. It also appeared that longer travel time did not affect for the travelers choice at this stage. Hence, the study suggests that the local authority and the bus operators should establish a “quality partnership” and working together in order to come out with a much better and appropriate transport policy and schemes for the existing public transportation systems, especially bus services.

Car production in Malaysia increasing dramatically. This situation created serious impact such as pollution and congestion. The Malaysian government should find a proper solution to prevent the vehicles growth by controlling them and improve public transportation services. The only way to get people to switch to public transportation is by improving the public transport system becomes more efficient. To find out the solution, an understanding of traveler behavior by applying to mode choice model using binary logit approach is necessary. Stated preferences method was adopted in order to construct hypothetical choice in current and future situations. A total of 250 respondents were selected as the sample based on the research study. This research employed a discrete choice analysis to examine the relationship between the independent variables (travel time, fares, comfort and safety). With variation of trip purpose (school, work, leisure activity, and shopping), model has been developed and tested to check the validity. The result shows that the potential of new train services to compete with the current commuter (KTM) and private car user are quite competitive. This is no doubt due to the characteristics of the respondent to choose a good level of services especially a better comfortability and safety with an affordable price (fares). It can be concluded that scenario 2 has great potential to be implemented since forecasting demand reached above 90%.

There is a large number of tools for the simulation of traffic and routes in public transport systems. These use different simulation models (macroscopic, microscopic, and mesoscopic). Unfortunately, these simulation tools are limited when simulating a complete public transport system, which includes all its buses and routes (up to 270 for the London Underground). The processing times for these type of simulations increase in an unmanageable way since all the relevant variables that are required to simulate consistently and reliably the system behavior must be included. In this paper, we present a new simulation model for public transport routes’ simulation called Masivo. It runs the public transport stops’ operations in OpenCL work items concurrently, using a multi-core high performance platform. The performance results of Masivo show a speed-up factor of 10.2 compared with the simulator model running with one compute unit and a speed-up factor of 278 times faster than the validation simulator. The real-time factor achieved was 3050 times faster than the 10 h simulated duration, for a public transport system of 300 stops, 2400 buses, and 456,997 passengers.

The development of the city's public transport system has an indispensable role to alleviate the pressure of urban roads. Bus travel time reliability is an important evaluation index of the bus operation service level. The simulation of bus travel time helps us understand the reliability of bus running time. In this paper, we use Monte Carlo stochastic simulation method to calculate the reliability of bus travel time. On this basis, we establish a model of the reliability of public transportation systems to research the reliability of bus travel time.

The intentions behind a person’s choice of transportation mode is vital information to have in strategic planning for a sustainable transportation system, and is very useful in predicting the behaviours of people. This paper was conducted to identify people's preferences of public transport. Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) as the psychological determinant, three main indicators, attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control (PBC), were explored to identify the mode choice of public transportation among the residents of Kajang. The data was obtained through questionnaires by employing a multistage sampling technique, where 348 respondents were approached. Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis showed that attitude was the dominant indicator among residents of Kajang for modes of public transport. This paper will contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the theory of mobility and travel behaviour, as well as act as baseline data for predicting people’s travel behaviour in future mode shift strategies dealing with everyday issues of traffic, such as congestion.

Many cities in the developing world are reforming transit by formalizing bus services to capture user and nonuser benefits. A forerunner in transit reform, the city of Bogotá, Colombia, first implemented the TransMilenio bus rapid transit (BRT) system and then more recently undertook a large-scale initiative to formalize and regulate traditional urban buses in the city. This integrated public transport system [Sistema Integrado de Transporte Público (SITP)] is transforming Bogotá’s traditional urban bus system into a regulated, concessionary system with restructured bus routes that integrates operations, fares, and infrastructure with the TransMilenio BRT. An investigation was conducted to determine whether the SITP has increased affordability and employment accessibility for public transit users in Bogotá. Results revealed that most accessibility improvements resulted from the recent expansion (and significantly higher speeds) of TransMilenio rather than the SITP. Results of an analysis conducted with budget constraints to determine affordable accessibility indicated that employment accessibility was reduced overall; however, the new integrated fare increased accessibility over traditional buses, especially on the periphery and in southern areas of the city, as a result of reduced transfer costs. Overall, results partly explain the lack of enthusiasm for the bus reform process on the part of public transit users and the political discomfort that becomes apparent when embarking on this process in developing-world cities. Also, more incremental, flexible reform might be crafted for public transportation systems that are dominated by informal services.

A significant population of our country is folks with an average income who depend on public transportation to go about. But this method of transport has become one of the most chaotic and also has a high percentage of crime sites for numerous incidents. Hence this method has the most insecure position for the public and also pollution generating state. Out of the full population of India as of 2017, around 5.5 percent of the total GDP goes by road dependent on public transit. The aim of this work is to develop a Smart automatic Public transport System with improved security to provide convenience to passengers who are unaware of the complete information about the buses such as availability of seats, journey time, distance traveled, and to make sure they experience the same comfort as their personal vehicles.

The use of Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT) in decision making related to transportation risk is still much debated. Mainly because of the travel and socio-economic characteristics of the traveller it possible for different responses to the specified Reference Point (RP) as well as the loss aversion. This difference can be seen from the value of Cumulative Prospect Theory parameters. Therefore, this paper will discuss about the determination of parameters CPT which affect public transportation mode choice model in the course of work trip activity. The reference point as an essential part of this study is determined based on the average travel time of commuter worker from South Tangerang City to Jakarta. Data obtained from stated preference survey, Feeder Busway/Busway and Commuter Line Jabodetabek as mode alternative and travel time attribute as a risk factor. The Binomial Logit model which has transformed utility distribution and probability with CPT and the Least Square Method to be obtained the parameters. Finally, some conclusions can be drawn that the CPT parameters produced by this study, have closed the range of value requirements in the CPT theory. So that the parameter value can be used to model the probability of mode choice with the risk of travel time in the study area.

Recently, bus companies in Peninsular Malaysia are confronted with a crisis of maintaining its local bus services. Operating unprofitable public transport system in local cities and rural areas is an important issue in a developed country. However, such cases (operating unprofitable public transport) have emerged in developing country like Malaysia. Until recently, researchers focused on this kind of problems for only developed country and there are not enough international comparison about local bus service. To address this gap, we conducted a comparative analysis between Japan and Malaysia in this paper. We’ll focus on the similarities and differences in terms of regulation, policy and some cases of bus substitution in both countries. We also examined the advantages and disadvantages about Japanese case and present some implication about future policy in Malaysia.
