One of the main reasons for the space vehicles (SV) power supply systems failure is a secondary arc. In the statistics of fatal failures that can lead to the SV loss, the failure rate of the power supply systems is 9%, but despite this, there are no standard methods for diagnosing the on-board equipment for the arc stability, due to the relative novelty of the problem. The problem we encountered is associated with the need to switch power supply systems to the voltage levels that are much higher than the arc voltage in the space vacuum. From the point of view of the defects downing that can lead to arcing, the most vulnerable are the insulation coatings. Therefore, a significant part of the problem solution is concentrated in the development of the specific methods for these coatings diagnostics. In space technology, such diagnostics significance is increased due to the inability to provide necessary repairs or services in the outer space.

Busbar technology is more and more used to realize connections within power supply systems in answer to the need of compactness. The integrated problem on heat conduction and radiation-convective heat exchange describes the temperature regime in current conductors and current carrying busbars of power electrical apparatus such as circuit breakers or high breaking capacity fuses. Beside steady-state conditions, the transient thermal regime of busbar has an important influence upon whole power supply system from thermal behaviour point of view. Hence, a 3D thermal analysis of a power system including fuse, low voltage circuit breaker and busbars connections, using a specific software package based on Finite Element Method, has been done. From 3D thermal modelling and simulations, the thermal transient impedance for the busbar has been computed. This allows a better correlation between protection characteristics of the fuse and circuit breaker and busbar design.

Biosensing systems based on microneedles can overcome the stratum corneum of the skin, i. e. the outer natural barrier of the human body, without any pain and detect the target analytes directly in the interstitial fluid. Moreover, microneedle-based devices (MNDs) can combine diagnostic sensing and therapeutic administration of drugs in one single tool. From this point of view, more than a painless door to the human body, a MND represents the a perfect example of theranostic instrument, since a single device could quantify the real value of a relevant biomolecule, such as glucose, and accurately deliver a drug, the insulin, if needed. MNDs could be integrated on printed circuit boards, flexible electronics and microfluidic channels, thus allowing a continuous monitoring of the physiological parameters with very low invasiveness, together with sustained and localized administration of drugs. MNDs can be designed for very specific applications, from the detection of skin cancer to the monitoring of metabolic pathways. Moreover, several fabrication approaches have been introduced, from laboratories to large-scale production. Finally MNDs can be properly functionalized to enhance analytical performances.

Companies working on semiconductors must currently assure the customers of not only the performance of the semiconductor device per se, but also its performance when it is implemented in a real board, therefore including the role of parasitic effects. It is therefore very important to evaluate, especially during the design phase, not only the single device, but the complete board and their mutual interactions. This consideration opens a new area of investigation in the field of electronic systems engineering. In the current literature, the problem of a software evaluation of parasitic dynamics and electromagnetic effects on printed boards is addressed from the point of view of researchers. Moreover, it is fundamental to have a complete view of the various tools that could be usefully adopted from the perspective of manufacturers. This is the main motivation of this technical note, which performs a comparative analysis of the most prominent software tools for printed circuit boards’ (PCBs) simulation. The main features, the key aspects, and the limitations of the software packages are analyzed in terms of the industrial design of power electronics devices, in order to ensure efficiency and fastness in the semiconductor market.

This chapter describes the different electric railway power supply systems and their main characteristics from the point of view of the power flow modeling and simulation. It considers the DC traction systems and also the AC ones, explaining the different elements embedded in the network and proposing steady state electrical models of each element. The basic methods for modeling the train behavior in terms of demanded/regenerated power are also detailed. Finally, the procedures to simulate the trains motion into the electrical network and how their motion and power demand affect to the electrical variables will be unraveled, explaining how to merge all the models in a system of equations.

Both national and international laws apply to collisions by space vehicles and objects in outer space and with the surface of the Earth. International treaties govern collisions involving commercial operators from different states, while domestic laws govern claims by nationals against national commercial operators. Commercial operators may find themselves as defendants or become plaintiffs when others cause them damage. This essay discusses liability in the new space era from the point of view of these operators, including both outer space and surface liabilities. It examines liability exposure, describes different regimes governing liability, and identifies prospective legal changes.

This paper based on ANOVA (ANalysis Of VAriance) presents an investigation in the design of signal via in multilayered printed circuit boards (PCB) technology from a signal integrity point of view. Using the concept of the orthogonal array (OA), different vias physical aspect ratios have been set in the analysis. The impacts of these parameters are investigated with the help for a full-wave electromagnetic simulation soft HFSS. This study demonstrates the factors which is the most influence on the signal integrity.

The main stages of the life cycle of electronic technical means of automation of an electric drive from the point of view of completeness of introduction of digital technologies are considered. A brief analysis of models, methods and tools is performed to achieve the effectiveness of the end-to-end digital process of development and production of programmable controllers for the electric drive. The approaches for variants formation of the basic structure of the controller, the creation of a digital model (prototype) of the controller, the provision of design taking into account the technology, the improvement of the installation of printed circuit boards on the automatic line in accordance with the concept of Industry 4.0, functional control, diagnostics and testing are proposed. The step by step continuity implement of the primary digital model is suggested. The presented material is confirmed by examples of creation of programmable controllers for complete devices of AC drives used in walking excavators, crawler excavators and traction electric drives for BelAZ dump trucks.
