In this study, a numerical and experimental investigation for the flow separation over 170 mm chord, the NREL S822 aerofoil low Reynolds number wind turbine blade aerofoil section has been investigated at 15.8 m/s wind speed using suction and blowing techniques for the locations between 0.15 and 0.41 of the chord to improve aerodynamic characteristics of a wind turbine rotor blade. In a numerical study, two-dimensional aerofoil (i.e. NREL S822), using Shear Stress Transport (SST (γ − Reθ)) turbulence model, is presented. Careful selection for the number of mesh was considered through an iterative process to achieve the optimum mesh number resulted in optimum values for the ratio of lift to drag coefficients (CL/CD). Values of the lift coefficient, drag coefficient, and separation location were investigated at an angle of attack 18°. Flow separation is monitored and predicted within the numerical results at the tested angles, which has been compared with the experimental results and should a fair agreement. The results revealed that the aerodynamic characteristics of NERL S822 aerofoil would be improved using the suction technique more than the suction and blowing techniques and there is a delay of flow separation with the increase of blowing or suction volumetric flow rate. Using these two techniques and careful selection of the mesh numbers with the right angle of attack can improve the aerofoil characteristics and therefore lead to improve the turbine performance characteristics.

In this study, a numerical simulation is made to understand the effect of the angle of attack on a NACA airfoil, which will be used for a basic shape to apply for making the vertical axis Darius wind turbine. The near-wall y+ value which is less than 1 is known to be most desirable for a near-wall modeling. Therefore, this study is aiming to observe the variation and find the optimized value of y+. The Reynolds number used in this study was 360,000, where the chord length and the velocity were 0.12m and 43.8m/s, respectively. Generally, the lift coefficient of the airfoil tends to increase as the angle of attack increases and it decreases substantially at the stall angle and then it decreases. As expected, the lift coefficient increases rapidly from 0 to 10° and then after the sudden drop of the lift (i.e., the stall) at around 10 to 16° depending on the y+ value. In this paper, it seems to be reliable and appropriate to use y+ value close to 1. From the surface pressure distribution, from the result obtained the ratio of pressure distribution of maximum value to the minimum value was 1.89and these peaks move forward to backward as the angle of attack increases.

This paper presents a two-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis on the effect of gurney flap on a NACA 4312 airfoil in a subsonic flow. These numerical simulations were conducted for flap heights 1.5%, 1.75%, 2% and 3% of chord length at fixed Reynold Number, Re (5×105) for different angle of attack (0o ~16o). ANSYS Fluent commercial software was used to conduct these simulations. The flow was considered as incompressible and K-omega Shear Stress Transport (SST) model was selected. The numerical results demonstrate that lift coefficient increase up to around 12o AoA (angle of attack) for NACA 4312 with and without gurney flap. For every AoA lift coefficient and drag coefficient presented proportionate behavior with flap height. However, lift co-efficient was decreased after around  angle of attack due to flow separation. Maximum lift to drag ratio was found at around 4o AoA for every flap length and airfoil with flap of 1.5%C (chord length) had shown the most optimized aerodynamic performance through the analysis. This study concluded that airfoil with gurney flap displayed enhanced aerodynamic performance than the airfoil without gurney flap due to the delay in flow separation.

Wind energy has been attracting more and more attentions due to its clean and renewable source. The aerodynamic characteristic of wind turbine airfoil directly affects the turbine efficiency. In order to improve the airfoil aerodynamic characteristic, a new concept airfoil configuration for wind turbine is presented. A cave on the upper surface near the trailing edge is designed to generate a trapped vortex in the cave. The trapped vortex is used to stabilize the separated flow when the airfoil at high angle of attack. Combining with the Gurney flap, the airfoil with the cave behaves very good aerodynamic characteristics at wide range of incidences, especially at high angles of attack. The method is used on the well-known FFA-W3-301 turbine airfoil. By using numerical simulation, it is shown that the new airfoil has a higher lift than the original airfoil at the same angle of attack, the stall angle of attack increases from 12 degree to 17 degree, and the maximum lift coefficient increases approximately 64 percents. In addition, the effects of the chord-wise location of starting point of the designed cave are discussed. Therefore, it is believed that the new-designed concept can be investigated and explored further for wind turbine.

Исследование направлено на разработку и апробацию методики численного моделирования аэродинамических и энергетических характеристик циклоидального ротора. За основу взята конфигурация ротора IAT21 L3. Для нее с использованием CFD-пакета ANSYS Fluent построена математическая модель и выполнен расчет. Проанализировано влияние скорости набегающего потока воздуха на движущийся ротор. Математическая модель и полученные результаты исследования могут быть использованы при создании летательных аппаратов с движителями роторного типа. This article addresses the study of the aerodynamic and energy characteristics of a cycloidal rotor subject to the influence of the incoming flow. Cycloidal rotor is one of the perspective devices that provide movement of aircrafts. Despite the fact that the concept of a cycloidal rotor arose in the early twentieth century, the model of a full-scale aircraft has not been yet realized. Foreign scientists have developed models of aircraft ranging in weight from 0.06 to 100 kg. The method of numerical calculation of the cycloidal rotor from the article [1] is considered and realized in this study. The purpose of study was the development and testing of a numerical simulation method for the cycloidal rotor and study aerodynamic and energy characteristics of the rotor in the hovering mode and under the influence of the oncoming flow. The aerodynamic and energy characteristics of the cycloidal rotor, rotating at a speed of 1000 rpm with incoming flow on it with velocities of 20-80 km/h, were calculated. The calculation results showed a directly proportional increase of thrust with an increase of the incoming on the rotor flow velocity, but the power consumed by the rotor was also increased. Increase of the incoming flow velocity leads to the proportional increasing of the lift coefficient and the coefficient of drag. Up to a speed of 80 km/h, an increase in thrust and power is observed; at higher speeds, there is a predominance of nonstationary effects and difficulties in estimating the aerodynamic characteristics of the rotor. In the future, it is planned to consider the 3D formulation of the problem combined with possibility of the flow coming from other sides.

Purpose The complex flow behavior over an oscillating aerodynamic body, e.g. a helicopter rotor blade, a rotating wind turbine blade or the wing of a maneuvering airplane involves combinations of pitching and plunging motions. As the parameters of the problem (Re, St and phase difference between these two motions) vary, a quasi-steady analysis fails to provide realistic results for the aerodynamic response of the moving body, whereas this study aims to provide reliable experimental data. Design/methodology/approach In the present study, a pitching and plunging mechanism was designed and built in a subsonic closed-circuit wind tunnel as well as a rectangular aluminum wing of a 2:1 aspect-ratio with a NACA64-418 airfoil, used in wind turbine blades. To measure the pressure distribution along the wing chord, a number of fast responding transducers were embedded into the mid span wing surface. Simultaneous pressure measurements were conducted along the wing chord for the Reynolds number of 0.85 × 106 for both steady and unsteady cases (pitching and plunging). A flow visualization technique was used to detect the flow separation line under steady conditions. Findings Elevated pressure fluctuations coincide with the flow separation line having been detected through surface flow visualization and flattened pressure distributions appear downstream of the flow separation line. Closed hysteresis loops of the lift coefficient versus angle of attack were measured for combined pitching and plunging motions. Practical implications The experimental data can be used for improvement of unsteady fluid mechanics problem solvers. Originality/value In the present study, a new installation was built allowing the aerodynamic study of oscillating wings performing pitching and plunging motions with prescribed frequencies and phase lags between the two motions. The experimental data can be used for improvement of computational fluid dynamics codes in case that the examined aerodynamic body is oscillating.

With the development of flight technology, the need for stable aerodynamic and vibration performance of the aircraft in the civil and military fields has gradually increased. In this case, the requirements for aerodynamic and vibration characteristics of the aircraft have also been strengthened. The existing four-rotor aircraft carries limited airborne equipment and payload, while the current eight-rotor aircraft adopts a plane layout. The size of the propeller is generally fixed, including the load capacity. The upper and lower tower layout analyzed in this paper can effectively solve the problems of insufficient four-axis load and unstable aerodynamic and vibration performance of the existing eight-axis aircraft. This paper takes the miniature octorotor as the research object and studies the aerodynamic characteristics of the miniature octorotor at different low Reynolds numbers, different air pressures and thicknesses, and the lift coefficient and lift-to-drag ratio, as well as the vibration under different elastic moduli and air pressure characteristics. The research algorithm adopted in this paper is the numerical method of fluid-solid cohesion and the control equation of flow field analysis. The research results show that, with the increase in the Reynolds number within a certain range, the aerodynamic characteristics of the miniature octorotor gradually become better. When the elastic modulus is 2.5 E, the aircraft’s specific performance is that the lift increases, the critical angle of attack increases, the drag decreases, the lift-to-drag ratio increases significantly, and the angle of attack decreases. However, the transition position of the flow around the airfoil surface is getting closer to the leading edge, and its state is more likely to transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow. When the unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced thickness is 0.2 mm and the thin arc-shaped airfoil with the convex structure has a uniform thickness of 2.5% and a uniform curvature of 4.5%, the aerodynamic and vibration characteristics of the octorotor aircraft are most beneficial to flight.

In regions of low wind speed, overcoming the starting torque of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) becomes a challenge aspect. In order to overcome this adversity, careful selection of airfoils for the turbine blades becomes a priority. This paper tries to address the issue utilizing an approach wherein by observing the effect of merging two airfoils. Two airfoils which are of varying camber and thickness are merged and their aerodynamic characteristics are evaluated using the software XFOIL 6.96. For a variation in angle of attack from 0 to 90°, aerodynamic analysis is done in order to observe the behavior of one quarter of the entire VAWT cycle. An objective function is developed so as to observe the maximum possible torque generated by these airfoils at Reynolds number varying from 15,000–120,000. Due to change in the value of CL observed at Low Reynolds Number using commercial CFD softwares, multiple objective functions are utilized to observe the behavior over a range of Reynolds number. An experimental co-relation between the cut-in velocity and the lift-coefficient of the airfoils is developed in order to predict the cut-in velocity of the interpolated airfoils. The airfoils used for this paper are NACA 0012, NACA 0018, FX 66 S196, Clark Y (smooth), PT 40, SD 7032, A 18, SD 7080, SG 6043 and SG 6040.

The article deals with a model describing the dependence of aerodynamic coefficients on the angle of attack for post-stall conditions. This paper also discusses the choice of parameters for the calculating the lift coefficient in such cases. In addition, it also considers some methods used to choose the shape of a supporting curve. The article also provides arguments concerning the physical interpretation of the coordinate of flow separation point in the implementation of the model. The examples of processing the flight test data are presented.

The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a bionic design for the airfoil of wind turbines inspired by the morphology of Long-eared Owl’s wings. Glauert Model was adopted to design the standard blade and the bionic blade, respectively. Numerical analysis method was utilized to study the aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoils as well as the blades. Results show that the bionic airfoil inspired by the airfoil at the 50% aspect ratio of the Long-eared Owl’s wing gives rise to a superior lift coefficient and stalling performance and thus can be beneficial to improving the performance of the wind turbine blade. Also, the efficiency of the bionic blade in wind turbine blades tests increases by 12% or above (up to 44%) compared to that of the standard blade. The reason lies in the bigger pressure difference between the upper and lower surface which can provide stronger lift.

This study presents a numerical optimization of a ducted wind turbine (DWT) to maximize power output. The cross section of the duct was an Eppler 423 airfoil, which is a cambered airfoil with a high lift coefficient (CL). The rotor was modeled as an actuator disk, and the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) k–ε model was used to simulate the flow. The optimization determined the optimal placement and angle for the duct relative to the rotor disk, as well as the optimal coefficient of thrust for the rotor. It was determined that the optimal coefficient of thrust is similar to an open rotor in spite of the fact that the local flow velocity is modified by the duct. The optimal angle of attack of the duct was much larger than the separation angle of attack of the airfoil in a freestream. Large angles of attack did not induce separation on the duct because the expansion caused by the rotor disk helped keep the flow attached. For the same rotor area, the power output of the largest DWT was 66% greater than an open rotor. For the same total cross-sectional area of the entire device, the DWT also outperformed an open rotor, exceeding Betz's limit by a small margin.
