In this study, the slip-line field model developed for orthogonal machining with a worn cutting tool was experimentally investigated. Minimum and maximum values of five slip-line angles ( θ1, θ2, δ2, η and ψ) were calculated. The friction forces that were caused by flank wear land, chip up-curl radii and chip thicknesses were calculated by solving the model. It was specified that the friction force increased with increase in flank wear rate and uncut chip thickness and it decreased a little with increase in cutting speed and rake angle. The chip up-curl radius increased with increase in flank wear rate and it decreased with increase in uncut chip thickness. The chip thickness increased with increase in flank wear rate and uncut chip thickness. Besides, the chip thickness increased with increase in rake angle and it decreased with increase in cutting speed.

Abstract Built-up layer (BUL) formed on the tool rake face during cutting has the tool protective effect. As BUL can change the shape of tool resulting in variation of rake angle and edge radius during cutting, it also has significant influences on the cutting phenomena such as tool wear, cutting forces and surface integrity. SUS304 stainless steel is very difficult to cut, leading to the rapid tool wear and poor surface quality. It also has a high tendency to form BUL during cutting due to its high work hardening rate and high chemical affinity. To actively and purposely utilize BUL, the effects of the size of BUL on the wear of uncoated cemented carbide tools in dry cutting of SUS304 were investigated using experimental and analytical methods in this study. The cutting parameters were chosen to induce the stable BUL formation. After cutting, the worn cutting tools were analyzed using the laser confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was confirmed that BUL can reduce the tool flank wear rate in the steady-state wear when its height is equal to or less than the uncut chip thickness. The results also showed that BUL formed at cutting speed 40 m/min can not only reduce the tool flank wear rate but also induce a significant improvement in cutting forces and surface integrity. Meanwhile, using the obtained experimental results and proposed model, simulation was conducted to evaluate the effects of the size of BUL on the tool flank wear formation. It was confirmed that BUL, especially when its height is close to the uncut chip thickness, which reduces the real rake angle to negative, can reduce the normal stress on the tool flank face and lead to a decrease in the tool flank wear rate.

Abstract Tread pattern wear is predicted by using an explicit finite element model (FEM) and compared with the indoor drum test results under a set of actual driving conditions. One pattern is used to determine the wear rate equation, which is composed of slip velocity and tangential stress under a single driving condition. Two other patterns with the same size (225/45ZR17) and profile are used to be simulated and compared with the indoor wear test results under the actual driving conditions. As a study on the rubber wear rate equation, trial wear rates are assumed by several constitutive equations and each trial wear rate is integrated along time to yield the total accumulated wear under a selected single cornering condition. The trial constitutive equations are defined by independently varying each exponent of slip velocity and tangential stress. The integrated results are compared with the indoor test results, and the best matching constitutive equation for wear is selected for the following wear simulation of two other patterns under actual driving conditions. Tens of thousands of driving conditions of a tire are categorized into a small number of simplified conditions by a suggested simplification procedure which considers the driving condition frequency and weighting function. Both of these simplified conditions and the original actual conditions are tested on the indoor drum test machines. The two results can be regarded to be in good agreement if the deviation that exists in the data is mainly due to the difference in the test velocity. Therefore, the simplification procedure is justified. By applying the selected wear rate equation and the simplified driving conditions to the explicit FEM simulation, the simulated wear results for the two patterns show good match with the actual indoor wear results.

Abstract Development of the banded radial tire is discussed. A major contribution of this tire design is a reliable run-flat capability over distances exceeding 160 km (100 mi). Experimental tire designs and materials are considered; a brief theoretical discussion of the mechanics of operation is given based on initial two-dimensional studies and later on more complete finite element modeling. Results of laboratory tests for cornering, rolling resistance, and braking are presented. Low rolling resistance, good cornering and braking properties, and low tread wear rate along with good puncture resistance are among the advantages of the banded radial tire designs.

AbstractThe need for development of high temperature wear resistant composite materials with superior mechanical properties and tribological properties is increasing significantly. The high temperature wear properties of aluminium boron carbide composites was evaluated in this investigation. The effect of load, sliding velocity, temperature and reinforcement percentage on wear rate was determined by the pin heating method using pin heating arrangement. The size and structure of base alloy particles change considerably with an increase of boron carbide particles. The wettability and interface bonding between the matrix and reinforcement enhanced by the addition of potassium flurotitanate. ANOVA technique was used to study the effect of input parameters on wear rate. The investigation reveals that the load had higher significance than sliding velocity, temperature and weight fraction. The pin surface was studied with a high-resolution scanning electron microscope. Regression analysis revealed an extensive association between control parameters and response. The developed composites can be used in the production of automobile parts requiring high wear, frictional and thermal resistance.

In the present study, the impact strength, flexural modulus, and wear rate of poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) with eggshell powder (ESP) composites have been investigated. The PMMA used as a matrix material reinforced with ESP at two different states (including untreated eggshell powder (UTESP) and treated eggshell powder (TESP)). Both UTESP and TESP were mixed with PMMA at different weight fractions ranged from (1-5) wt.%. The results revealed that the mechanical properties of the PMMA/ESP composites were enhanced steadily with increasing eggshell contents. The samples with 5 wt.% of UTESP and TESP additions give the maximum values of impact strength, about twice the value of the pure PMMA sample. The calcination process of eggshells powders gives better properties of the PMMA samples compared with the UTESP at the same weight fraction due to improvements in the interface bond between the matrix and particles. The wear characteristics of the PMMA composites decrease by about 57% with increases the weight fraction of TESP up to 5 wt.%. The flexural modulus values are slightly enhanced by increasing of the ESP contents in the PMMA composites.

The relevance of the search for solutions to increase the wear resistance of bucket teeth of excavating machine type front shovel is analyzed. The reasons for the wear of the teeth are considered. It is determined that when excavating machines work for rocks of VIII and IX categories, impact-abrasive wear of the inner side of the teeth and abrasive external wear occurs. It is proved that the cold-work hardening of Hadfield steel (the teeth material), which occurs during the excavating machine teeth work in the rocks of VIII and IX categories, reduces the impact-abrasive wear rate on the inner side of the teeth and does not affect the abrasive wear of the outer. The methods for thermomechanical treatment of the outer side of the excavating machine tooth is proposed. It can increase the wear resistance of Hadfield steel (110G13L) up to 1.7 times and lead to the self-sharpening effect of the tooth due to equalization of the wear rate of the outer and inner parts of the tooth. The efficiency factor of thermomechanical treatment to reduce the of abrasive wear rate of Hadfield steel is experimentally proved.
