This paper investigates what types of idioms are most likely to be transferred while learning a second language. The subjects of the study were 120 advanced Syrian learners of English. The comprehension of 80 English idioms was tested by a multiple-choice test and an English-into-Syrian Arabic translation test. The same idioms were also tested for production by a Syrian Arabic-into-English translation test. Results showed that learners scored higher in the comprehension and production test of cognate idioms because of positive language transfer. Language transfer had a negative effect when processing English idioms which have false cognate equivalents in Syrian Arabic. However, with English idioms that have pragmatic equivalents and those which have no Syrian equivalents at all, the factor of transfer is replaced, as a strategy, by metaphoric association and pragmatic knowledge of the world. The study concludes that the degree of similarity to a native language idiom does not necessarily help in the process of idiom comprehension or production. Meanwhile, the linguistic differences between the English idiom and the Syrian idiom do not automatically lead to problems in comprehending L2 idioms.

Adult subjects were given concrete and abstract textbook passages to study by using either an imaginai or verbal strategy. Two days later, they were given a multiple-choice test and a production test of comprehension. The verbal strategy produced better comprehension than the imaginai strategy; concrete passages were comprehended better than abstract passages, but only according to the production test; and strategy and concreteness did not interact. Differences between these results and results obtained in imagery research on word lists are discussed, and caution is advised before generalizing the word research to meaningful prose learning by adults

In educational testing, answer-copying is considered a behaviour that poses threats to the validity of test scores interpretations, which is a concern when interpreting the test results for the purpose of making changes to curriculum and educational policies. Answer copying involves at least two examinees, one being the source and the other the copier. While different methods have been developed to detect answer-copying using statistical indices, researchers have not yet examined the use of video digitizing technology via a kinematic sanalysis of the data to detect answer-copying during test taking situations. The purpose of this case study was to explore the use of video digitizing technology to detectanswer-copying by measuring examinees’ response time, displacement and velocity from item to item on a test. A sample of two university students volunteered to demonstrate the benefits and challenges of using video digitizing technology to detect answer-copying. While this is a small scale demonstration, the outcome of this study may shed light on whether or not the use of video digitizing technology provide evidence of feasibility and some preliminary reliability in the detection of answer copying. The lesson learned from this study can inform the direction of a future program of research.

One of the free platforms made by IT companies in the education sector in Indonesia can be used to facilitate online learning at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. The platform is called the SEVIMA EdLink. This platform needs to be known by academics and the wider community of education in the world. This platform provides facilities to make it easier for users to input material content and online assessment forms. The purpose of this research was to demonstrate the development of material contents of the ‘Program Evaluation’ subject and its assessment form that was embedded into the SEVIMA EdLink platform. The approach used in this research was a development based on the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). Subjects who were involved in testing the material contents were 29 students. The measuring instruments used in testing the material contents were questionnaires. Subjects who were involved in the content validity test for multiple-choice test questions were six experts, and two experts were involved in the content validity test for essay test questions. The tools used in testing the content validity of multiple-choice test questions or essay test questions were checklist documents. The analysis technique of the test results of the material contents was descriptive quantitative. The analysis technique for multiple-choice test questions and essay test questions was the comparison of content validity test results with the standard scores of content validity based on Guilford. This research results showed the quality percentage of material contents in the subject of ‘Program Evaluation’ was a good category. The content validity results of the multiple-choice test questions and essay test questions were both in the excellent category.

The purpose of this paper is to determine the effectiveness of using multiple choice tests in subjects related to the administration and business management. To this end the authors used a multiple-choice test with specific questions to verify the extent of knowledge gained and the confidence and trust in the answers. The analysis made, conducted by tests given out to a group of 200 students, has been implemented in one subject related with investment analysis and has measured the level of knowledge gained and the degree of trust and security in the responses at two different times of the business administration and management course. Measurements were taken into account at different levels of difficulty in the questions asked and the time spent by students to complete the test. Results confirm that students are generally able to obtain more knowledge along the way and get increases in the degree of trust and confidence. It is estimated that improvement in skills learned is viewed favourably by businesses and are important for job placement. Finally, the authors proceed to analyze a multi-choice test using a combination of knowledge and confidence levels.

Nanotechnology is a new technology created by manipulating small particles in the material in order to obtain different and unique properties. It brings new solutions in economic, ecologic and social ways to participate in achieving sustainability. Nanomaterials, which are the products of this new technology, are used in building construction field with the aim of reducing the harm to the environment. The aim of this paper is to determine the effects of nanomaterials in this field. To reach the aim of the study, the topic was examined in the following sequence. Firstly, the general definition of nanotechnology and dimensional classification of nanomaterials were made. Nanotechnology, nanomaterial and nanoarchitecture applications in building production were examined together with examples. The effects of different applications were analyzed in conjunction with environmental-social and economic sustainability issues. Finally, the nanomaterials were evaluated within a test and evaluation matrix according to the environmental-social-economical sustainability criteria. Evaluation was made through the percentages of effects where (+) has positive effect, (-) has negative effect and (o) has no/unknown effect. The test results were explained in a test evaluation report. The findings of the research from the test results point out that, the use of nanomaterials in building production can help to achieve sustainability but the effects on human health have not been fully determined yet and this is the most important disadvantage of using these new tech materials. Keywords: Sustainability; nanotechnology; nanoarchitecture; nanomaterials; building production; test evaluation matrix

Two experiments investigated the information conveyed by intonation from speaker to listener. A multiple-choice test was devised to test the ability of 48 adults to recognize and label intonation when it was separated from all other meaning. Nine intonation contours whose labels were most agreed upon by adults were each matched with two English sentences (one with appropriate and one with inappropriate intonation and semantic content) to make a matching-test for children. The matching-test was tape-recorded and given to children in the first, third, and fifth grades (32 subjects in each grade). The first-grade children matched the intonations with significantly greater agreement than chance; but they agreed upon significantly fewer sentences than either the third or fifth graders. Some intonation contours were matched with significantly greater frequency than others. The performance of the girls was better than that of the boys on an impatient question and a simple command which indicates that there was a significant interaction between sex and intonation.
